Making a difference about Multiple Myeloma

Tonight, Ann Curry will introduce you to a truly remarkable woman in this week's Making a Difference segment.

Ten years ago Kathy Giusti was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. It's known as "orphan cancer" because there are relatively few people in the country who have it and because, many say, not a lot of money is allocated for research. Until Kathy came along. Upon diagnosis, Kathy quit her job as a pharmaceutical executive and moved back East to live closer to her twin sister Karen. Kathy had no plans to let cancer take over her life. In fact, during our interview, Karen told Ann that two weeks after Kathy's diagnosis -- while Karen was still in tears trying to come to grips with the news -- Kathy told her of her plans to not only fight the disease for herself but for all Myeloma patients.

Sunday night's lineup

First, by way of introduction... I'm a producer here at Nightly News. John Seigenthaler is hard at work on tonight's program and asked that I take a break from the bucket of jelly beans sitting in the middle of the newsroom to tell you what we have coming up tonight.

The big story of the day, of course, is the latest tape attributed to Osama Bin Laden. It was released this morning on Al Jazeera television. Moments after it hit the airwaves, NBC folks from around the world relayed information and analysis to our international newsdesk. In fact, there are at least 6 files in our computer system with details -- Kelly O'Donnell who is travelling with President Bush, Charlene Gubash, our producer in Cairo, and Bob Windrem, the network's Senior Investigative Producer are just a few of the folks who have been reporting on the story today. And as I write this - there's yet another headline hitting the newswires -- "

WHITE HOUSE SAYS US INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY BELIEVES BIN LADEN TAPE AUTHENTIC"

Kevin Corke is assigned to the White House today and is working with a team of producers and editors on that story.
