About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Going above and beyond for strangers

Someone much smarter than I once said: "You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give."

I thought about that during a recent trip I took down south to Mississippi and Louisiana. I was traveling to shoot a Campbell Brown story that will likely air Tuesday on the anniversary of Katrina slamming into the Gulf Coast.

The story is a lovely one. I think it's our job, if even occasionally, to tell a story that describes the petals of Katrina and not just the thorns. God knows the thorns are plentiful and obvious and important. We won't learn how to not repeat the inexcusable mistakes of the disaster without the thorns, but it can't hurt to be reminded of the generosity of the angels who walk among us -- the petals. Junebugs

June 1 is a special day here at NBC News.

Sure, some sad things have happened on this day. James Buchanan, our 15th President, died. And you'll all remember when the Roman Emperor Marcus Didius was murdered in his palace in the year 193. (I believe that was sometime before Brian took over Nightly News.)

Music matters

One week ago, today, Nov. 10, was the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. At the Mariners' Church of Detroit 29 names were read, each echoed by the tolling of a bell to memorialize the crew members who were lost in a vicious storm on Lake Superior.

Of course, the reason many of us know about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is because of the six-and-a-half minute Gordon Lightfoot song of the same name. The single reached No. 2 on the charts in November 1976.

Why am I writing this in the NBC Nightly News blog? Because it's an opportunity to remind folks that journalists are people, too.

No, really.
