The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

The Computer File: Technology Calling

Speaking of the technology of the future, there are those of us who think that the cell phone, sometimes referred to by technology people who like to name trends as the "third screen," will actually be the "second screen" -- ahead of the computer panel.  After all, we don't go anywhere without it and now we can watch television on it.  And that's television delivered at 30 frames per second just as it comes to a TV set.

Remembering Christopher Glenn

I love my job. I really do. It allows me to combine my love for news with my fascination by technology. But on those days when I feel like my head just may explode from reading just one too many newsletters with the words "bleeding edge," "wiki," or "WiMax," I look up into a small, partially hidden corner of my office where I keep an Emmy from my days as a producer of "In The News," a broadcast, which, by the way, had more adults in its audience than kids.

I like it there so that it is not obvious to others, but I can look up and remind myself of a rewarding part of my career when I wrote and produced some of those two-and-a-half-minute spots. I remember the first time a pitch of mine became a piece. I remember the first piece I was assigned to write and produce. I remember the first time I supervised the recording session. I remember Chris gently editing while showing such kindness to a novice like me. And his edits added such clarity. But most of all, I remember listening to Chris Glenn say the words I wrote. It was the ultimate compliment as well as motivation to get it better the next time. His was a voice of authority - that of a teacher as well as a journalist.  And he will be missed.

What I learned at the CES

You'd think I would have recovered by now from the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of January. But it's difficult to recover when every morning brings more news of the love affair between the media and technology. Reading each account (not for the faint of heart) of CES's coolest thing or biggest announcement is a little like the movie "Groundhog Day" except there's always more.

This weekend, I wanted to use the cool rolling bag distributed to attendees. (And if I had to take a guess, it would be that the bags next year will be sans wheels, since crowds of people plus rolling bags leads to lots of tripping.) That meant pulling out all the magazines and flyers I acquired in Las Vegas. (A paperless society yet? I think not.) So that set me to thinking about the show... again.
