Things are Heating Up...

Good afternoon.

Coming up tonight on NBC Nightly news, we'll have coverage of the continuing heat wave in the west. The video we've seen from bank thermometers looks like they're displaying NBA scores.  Lots of triple digits, and not a drop of rain to cool things down. As these things go the risk of heat-related deaths and wildfires increases each day. NBC's Charles Hadlock is on the top of that for us today.

Jim Maceda will explore a new twist to the violence in Iraq, where 8 American soldiers have died over the last few days, and over 100 civilians were killed today in a car bombing north of Iraq.  There is good news in that the troop surge is working to stem the violence in Baghdad, but the bad news is, insurgents are stepping-up their attacks outside the capital as demonstrated by today's attack in Tuz Khormato.

Here in the newsroom we've all been enjoying a direct feed of the Live Earth concerts going on across the world today.  Former Vice-President Al Gore has been the point man for this global effort to draw attention to the problem of climate change.  It is reminiscent of past concerts on behalf of famine and poverty relief.  Tonight our Ron Allen will hear from those who question the staying power of these sorts of efforts, and look at how much good Live Earth will really do.

John Yang will have the story of a government disconnect, that raised the expectations of thousands of legal immigrants who thought they were about to be put on the fast track to citizenship.

Finally, if 7 is your lucky number then you are lucky times 3 today. We'll show you the incredible line-up at one Las Vegas wedding chapel on this July 7th, 2007, for couples hoping a 7/7/7 wedding will bring them good luck. (Just beware of the 7 year itch!)

Thanks for checking-in with us. I'll see you later this evening on NBC Nightly News.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, First of all Mr.Holt I enjoyed the little tour of your office this morning on Weekend Today. Alot of technology for one office, but these days one does need it. Just remember to unplug something when you leave. Regarding the report by Mr Maceda this evening I guess it would seem like good news and bad news at the same time. In the report it was said that the surge of troops is helping in the neighborhoods, but in some of the provinces like the one north of Baghdad where the truck bomb went off it is still very violent. These insurgents are just relentless with all these attacks. I feel sorry for all the innocent people caught in the middle. I realize that our troops are needed to restore order and quell the violence, but we are paying such a heavy price. I really wish they could have peace in that region soon and the troops could relish in the progress of peace. Finally, I have to say that some of the ways that people were seen getting married on the report was a little tacky, but I guess for Las Vegas it is normal. With regards to the date being lucky I suppose it can be. But in my mind to find a person to marry who is a soul mate, best friend and just plain someone to love the rest of your life is truly lucky and it shouldn't matter what date you get married. I truly think you know in your heart when you meet that special person and whatever day you get married from that day forward you are already lucky because to eachother you are priceless. And so is each and every day with that person. Because even if you have to spend time apart you are always in eachothers hearts. To find love with a special someone is the luckiest thing in the world no matter what the number on the calendar. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. See you on Sunday for Nightly News. Peace to all!

Hypocrisy is greeted with apathy. Celebrities need to align their walk with their talk if they expect to truly inspire green living.

It seems celebs find it hard to give up the life to which they've become accustomed, so they call on the peons to make sacrifices on their behalf.

It's not hard to research how much fuel is used by private jets, limos, huge homes and heated swimming pools.

Some in this country have become so used to luxurious living that they'll spend $7000/night on a camping trip!

Celebrities berate big business while profiting greatly from the biggest...media conglomerates. Those who fail to practice the ecology they preach insult the public they seek to influence.

Another danger to the environment is drivers going 100 MPH, which is what Al Gore's son was doing when arrested. Many innocent citizens are dying at the hands of such drivers. Perhaps Mr. Gore should scale down his global concerns until he has his own house in order. The size of his house could use some scaling down as well.
