POOTIE AND THE BLUEFISH
The headline worked until I realized that whoever speculated on the radio this morning that President Bush would take President Putin fishing for Blues was totally wrong. I saw the pool video feed come into the building this morning, and I noticed 41's boat "Fidelity III" was idling just off the rocks at Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, Me. That can usually only mean one thing, as veterans of New England salt water fishing well know: striped bass. Apparently, Putin caught the only striper (a helluva fish -- an estimated 30-incher), which led someone at our editorial meeting to speculate that KGB divers actually hooked it for him under the boat. It was worth watching the video this morning just to see the clothing of the participants: the president in a blue jacket with "43" emblazoned on the front, and Putin wearing what you'd expect the former head of the KGB to wear fishing: a kind of action-figure outfit, later shown to be a rather form-fitting, short-sleeve shirt under a windbreaker. In truth, the two men have some very serious business to transact during their 13th meeting, and we'll report on that tonight.
We continue our reporting on the London and Scotland bombing attempts, and the very basic question: how could those responsible for these spectacular failures be at all affiliated with the spectacular attacks we associate with al-Qaida? We have several correspondents on the story and will have comprehensive coverage tonight.
And while we can't say too much, our own Richard Engel has a rare and exclusive look inside al-Qaida tonight.
Seeing the town of Coffeyville, Kan., in the news all day due to flooding made me think back to my time in Kansas in my first TV job. I was once the proud owner of a car I purchased from Coffeyville Motors. It was the only thing on the lot that I could afford -- a beige Ford Escort. Can you say chick magnet? My wife actually married me despite the fact that I was still driving that car when we first met. Coffeyville is a great town undergoing an awful tragedy, and we'll have a report tonight.
There's also some fascinating data tonight on the link between stress and obesity, and Mika Brzezinski will have a great piece on a big-name American employer deciding to do right by those with special needs.
TODAY IN HISTORY
President Garfield was shot on this date in 1881 -- he died later that summer at the Jersey Shore of his injuries. Rest assured: the Jersey Shore normally has restorative powers. Garfield's problem was the sheer number of physicians who probed his wounds with unwashed hands. Not even the Jersey Shore could save him.
Also on this day in 1964, Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Click for images.
MEDAL OF HONOR
We have dual distinctions before us today. First, there's our biography today of one of America's Medal Of Honor recipients. John Finn is the oldest living recipient -- and was the first to emerge from the Second World War, as his acts of extraordinary bravery came during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Finn, as he's known, is an unbelievable character, with the looks of Kirk Douglas coupled with the demeanor of Mickey Rooney. At our last big meeting in New York this year, Finn volunteered to get up and speak -- because as he put it, he didn't know how much longer he'd be around. My money's on Finn.
Our other task here today is to remember. As a member of the board of the Medal of Honor Foundation, I received an e-mail Saturday night, the last line of which read, "there are now 109 living recipients." One of the great submarine warriors in U.S. history has died. Adm. Gene Fluckey was a Medal of Honor Recipient. Now there are 109. Keep them all, living and dead, in your thoughts and prayers.
We hope you can join us for our broadcast tonight.

Brian, on the August issue, please address the Economy, especially work being outsourced to other nations/India. My company is laying off people left and right to India. How can we celebrate our Independence tomorrow when so many people are forced to be on unemployment and watching so many GOOD Paying jobs going to other Nations because of the Bottom Line....cheaper labor. What happened to A Good Day of Work? There is NO Job Security any more. This is not addressed enough..should be a platform for the Presidential Race. It is the untold story.

Thanks for the enjoyable story about your first car from Coffeyville Motors. I second what Lisa says about you :) My heart goes out to the folks in that part of Kansas and I hope the floodwaters recede for them soon so they can start cleaning up and rebuilding. It was good to hear on the news this morning that Bush has declared a major disaster in Kansas which means help should start getting there soon.
I was interested to hear in another news report on the Kansas flood that part of the problem was that a levee had broken there--which leads to fallout from another disaster. Per an Associated Press article yesterday, New Orleans' levee repairs could expose the French Quarter to greater peril than it had been in during Katrina. And planners say this weakness can't be helped, at least for now.
Experts say stronger levees and flood walls could funnel storm water into the Industrial Canal cul-de-sac--only 2 miles from Bourbon Street--and overwhelm the waterway's 12-foot high concrete flood walls that shield some of New Orleans' most beautiful and cherished neighborhoods. The only thing separating quaint Creole bungalows and St. Louis Cathedral from a hurricane storm surge are those barriers, similar in design to walls that broke during Katrina.
Officials from the Army Corps of Engineers knew levee repairs would heighten the risk to the French Quarter, Marigny, and other historic parts of New Orleans, which came through Katrina relatively unscathed. One commander even called it the system's "Achilles Heel." To curb the danger, the Corps reinforced the existing barriers. But engineers didn't have enough time or money to entirely replace the flood walls with higher, stronger ones.
Independent experts say those steps were insufficient. "It wasn't 'Get all the repairs done and then look at the rest of the system,'" said Ed Link, a University of Maryland engineer and a top adviser on the reconstruction work. "It was all being done in parallel." The system, he said, is stronger now, but "it's misinformation to infer that it's an unintended consequence."

Libby is still paying a higher price than Clinton, or Berger. After Clinton selling pardons for MONEY democrats have no room to complain.

Incredible interview by Richard. I wonder how often the thoughts of " Daniel Pearl" would have crossed his mind. Richard's mom is certainly one of the bravest.Stay Safe Richard.

Pootie and the Bluefish? what a terrible pun. With your busy schedule, you must've been Russian to come up with a good title. I'm only kidding, you Putin a good effort.

Brian,
Although they tend to be more pelagic, bluefish will often hang around rocky shorelines too, drawn by the same thing as the "rockfish" (stripers): Bait. Heck, they'll chase forage fish practically onto dry land. Why, I remember one time...Wait, what was the story about again? What's a Pootie?

Great report Richard--you are the best!!! But you are putting yourself in some dicey situations. Please be careful.

Good evening or morning Brian. I just listened to your nightly newscast and really enjoyed the last two segments. The first about the dilemma over obesity and stress rang a bell with me. I can relate to the story because I had two jobs in my life that demanded a certain amount and type of stress to perform at a high level of expertise. Which in plain words were internal or through my creation and external stresses created outside of my control. But first I must admit that I respected both positions because I liked the money and when I say that I feel so cheap. But there are things a girls needs and being kept sounds even worse. I gained weight on the second job because it was sedentary. Now that I am retired I can now analyze the reason for the weight gain. When you are in a stressed emotionally charged atmosphere and you don’t always have the answer to any given problem the job bestows on you the one thing you can always get your hands on is “FOOD”. Then what does an unrelenting romantic do, I play the lottery with hopes of winning so I may leave my job but, you know that answer, I never win. As an adult, you’re so committed to your responsibilities that you would never abandon them for a cave and that’s when stress takes hold of you. The one thing that allows you win, if you just get your hands on it, is “FOOD”. Besides if you’re making the kind of money that brings quick satisfaction you won’t hear a word from the clerk at the big beefy burger joint down the street. Even though the clerk’s future occupation will be a psychologist he/she can’t counsel you now as to why you always super size your order. Brian, trust me, a dish of yogurt, shredded wheat, honey, and blueberries is the one thing in life that will never let you down. And that’s just dessert. I am not going to get vulgar but even sex isn’t any good when you’re stressed because with the next morning comes the same old stress. Besides it isn’t fair to a partner because you’re just using him for temporary relief. I have found that abstaining is more honest and you don’t have to fake anything. By that time not even “FOOD” is good for you because you develop reflux, heartburn, and a series of other bad symptoms. Then you have to start taking the little purple pill and making visits to the gastroenterologists. Then depending on if you have good health benefits or not you have to pay a medical bill for eating and until someone tells me different eating a pizza isn’t against the law yet. So you haven’t done anything but try and enjoy yourself so you’re not stressful. But now with retirement in full swing I am exercising more and because of the costal state I live in the fresh fish, vegetables, and fruit have got me looking real good. But something else is absent from this life and that is stress so I have no need to obey the call of food when I can’t resolve an issue and I work a part time job. I now eat because I am hungry and the food tastes good. The only other circumstance that stops a person from not gaining weight from eating is mournful stress situations due to the loss of a loved one or someone special in your life like your dog or cat. When my parents passed away I couldn’t eat for a long time. Perhaps someone should do a study on how stress and anxiety due to loss of a loved one doesn’t create a need to eat. The second story of your broadcast was about Walgreens and the CEO whom are doing wonderful things for the greatest untapped manpower source of America. I have a whole new respect for that company. My Nephew is hearing impaired and works for a large grocery store chain in the southeast. Publix Grocery stores employ moderate to dominate handicapped people of all ages. When in the area I only shop at Publix because this store chain is employee owned and I know that I’m putting my money into an organization that really puts their money where their mouth is by employing my Nephew and all who seriously want to work for a living. The part about the young man who works on the computer sounds just like my Nephew. He is so bright at in information systems that he purchased his first computer, set it up and taught himself how to establish files and records. When a person isn’t born with one talent then God always blesses you with something else as a way to succeed in life. Brian I pray you and your family enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Brian,
Once again you got me through the majority of my cardio segment at the gym.....like a good friend talking me through it.
The report from Richard Engel I found dramatic, informative and completely frightening. The new recruit already has a date with death as a suicide bomber, how tragic. It is still nearly impossible to comprehend just how much America and by default the American people are hated in this world. I pray that Richard Engel has not put himself in further jeapordy by bringing this information to us.
The What Works segment, how wonderful, amazing and inspiring. Loved the fact that this center is more efficient and productive. I dare say it is a happier place to work as well. I can only hope that more companies not only examine the model but put it into action. The disabled citizens of this country are an untapped market that could be a boon to our workforce.
Thank you for bringing this story to us.
In case I miss you tomorrow, Happy 4th of July! May it be a safe and peaceful one for us all with no segments on July 5th of a fireworks related tragedy

Thank you for mentioning the Putin visit FIRST. Hard to say how it might have been covered had it not been for terrorist attacks across the Pond. We here in Southern Maine have been saturated with his visit for the better part of 2-3 weeks, so it seems odd to know three powerful leaders were in town and barely a snippet on any network news show I saw over the weekend.
I don't think the shot went national, but either Saturday or Sunday morning #41 and #43 went fishing off the coast in Biddeford, which is only a few miles (via water) from Kennebunkport. They dropped anchor so they could fish for a while, but when they went to leave, they couldn't free the anchor. It was a rather humorous photo of the former & the current presidents yanking on the anchor rope, waiting for the Secret Service to come rescue them!
Yeah, need that humor. Bush's actions regarding Libby are just as criminal as the the actions that got Libby convicted!

With the amnesty bill for undocumented aliens that alienated the GOP base Bush had to do something to get them back. Partial amnesty for Libby.
If Bush is so determined to free someone why not the American people who he put under the yoke of suspicion of being unpatriotic. You are either with us (the GOP) said or against us as he once said and many in this country casted glances at fellow Americans who did not agree with Bush.

Good Evening Again Mr.Williams, Great to see Richard Engel reporting on the broadcast and what an extraordinary journalist he is and will always be. I found is extremely interesting how he managed to finally have these people agree to a meeting. Seeing their eyes and hands shows just how hateful this group is of America. It is sad to think that a nineteen year old boy would agree to be a suicide bomber in a car or wear a belt around his waist because of this group. Richard showed the frightening aspect of the leader not wanting to be shown, but willing to show terrible videos of killings. The first pet shop owner appeared unassuming, yet he carried as much hate as the others. Richard's report really proves we must always be vigilant and keep careful watch of any activity of this group because they are like "bees in a nest" as was stated and they will sting. We just have to be ready will a counterattack to stop the sting from hurting us. In light of what happened this weekend there must be a heightened sense of security everwhere. Thank you Richard for that extraordinary piece although scary it is information that can be vital to realize the danger of this group. Mr. Williams, Richard is an extraordinary journalist! Always, always keep him safe anywhere in th Middle East! NBC has a true treasure of a reporter! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to Richard! Peace to all!

Scooter Libby - the Paris Hilton of the administration...
What a disgrace! I guess Bush just forgot about "seperation of powers" and all that silly business...
Let's see, Cheney is BOTH the Executive and Legislative branches (or is it neither - I forget) and now Bush is a judge...
Looks like obstruction of justice to me...

Brian we no longer have a Justice System. Today a guilty man doesn't have to pay the price of his crime because he protected the Vice President. Most like Bush Senior advised his son George this weekend that all the loyal GOP demanded that Libby not pay for his crimes like the rest of Americans.
Next Libby might be appointed Attorney General by the Bush Administration as a reward for loyalty. GOP Loyal soldiers like Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham, Skilling and the Hammer should be treated the same way as Libby.

Brian,
What sets you apart from all other anchors--past and future--is your ability to really feel what others are going through and find some connection with it--the story of Coffeyville is just the latest in a long line of examples. I think, really, that you care more about the American public than due the folks we elect to do just that. An unhappy thought here as we celebrate the birth of the greatest nation on Earth. Happy Fourth and Many Thanks,Marsha Sergent

Elbron New Jersey became the town that President Garfield died.
This was good to see the President had his parents there to support him while he talked to the most powerful President of our time. Makes you wonder how John F. Kennedy dealt with Russia and the rest of the Presidents who had serious problems with Russia. I know former President Bush and Barbara Bush were a big help to their son.
I got a call from a friend in the UK and they're handing these terror threats really good. I told her we have had the Oklahoma bombing and schools being threaten we to handle problems well. But I noticed in the media it's putting fear back in America by using any and everything is Al Qaeda. A boy flies his toy plane in the wrong area and the media says it's a terror threat. FDR was right when he said " there is nothing to fear but fear itself".
Any attack done thought out the world the US says it's Al Qaeda.
The Supreme Court did it's job just in time. 1964 the Civil Rights bill ended the horror of our pass. 2007 The Bush Administration and their appointed Justices are ending the bill and bringing back the horror. I remember to well and all I can say is Americans should pray that God will forgive us for our sin.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, First of all I'm sure the car had no reflection on whether or not the future Mrs.Williams would marry you or not. Your a very nice man and I'm sure it was many things that attracted her to you. Thank you for the heads up on the fact that Richard has a report this evening. I always enjoy seeing him on the broadcast. Also thank you for the brief history of what happened on this date in history. Sometimes time passes and certain things slip our minds. It is very sad that one of the Medal of Honor recipients has passed. We should always honor them. Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to all!
