Lots to talk about ...
Good afternoon. Brian is enjoying the rest of the week off, and I'll be in the anchor chair this evening.
Tonight on Nightly News we are going to drill down beyond the latest airline flight delay statistics. By themselves they are bad -- the worst in 13 years. But those numbers only tell part of the story. The Department of Transportation only tracks the on-time performance for flights, not for passengers. A flight delayed two-hours is bad enough, but if as a result you miss your connecting flight, your actual delay can be several hours if not a couple of days. Our aviation correspondent Tom Costello is going to try and put it all in perspective, and help us understand what we're all really up against this summer when we head to the airport.
Out West today it's hot -- record-breaking hot. George Lewis will report on some of the problems arising from the heat and drought conditions that are affecting large parts of the Southwest. We'll also look at the sharp rise in applications among legal immigrants looking to become U.S. citizens. Our correspondent John Yang will explain the various reasons behind the increase.
Our "What Works" segment will focus on car sharing programs that allow part-time drivers to have access to a car whenever they need it without big car payments or traditional rental contracts. The car sharing idea took root in the big urban centers, but now thousands are taking advantage of it across the country, saving money and helping the environment.
Without question, the most talked about story in our newsroom has been about -- talking. A new study has tried to answer the question of who talks more, women or men? Frankly as a man, I think the less said on the subject, the better, so I'll end the blog right here and ask you to watch our broadcast tonight.

The newscasts do cover a lot of important stories, although some that should be covered are unfortunately overlooked. I don't see anything wrong, though, with including a story or two in each newscast that is merely interesting, and not necessarily earth-shattering. It's good to have a little relief now and then from the hard news that can get so depressing. There are many places to get in-depth news coverage, so if you're using a source, such as Nightly News, that doesn't live up to your standards or expectations, try another one.
And there is some value to knowing that women aren't the uncontrolled chatterboxes they have been made out to be. The stereotype of the mindlessly chattering woman droning on to her poor, helpless husband has been used against women for ages to make them seem ditsy and vapid. This story may not change the world, but if it changes some perceptions, it's a good thing to know.

I don't wish to single out Mr. Holt, but; the Media doesn't "get it" when they're discussing neverending flight delays in the same broadcast w/ whether men or women talk more. ALL you people need to become journalists & stop "selling a product", like glorified 'used car salesmen' ! You can start by discussing this : We have had it far too EASY here, for FAR too long ! We have all become arrogant & 'soft'; ethically, spiritually & intellectually. All that matters to us anymore is competition; w/ each other, even moreso than w/ the rest of the World. We compete by "playing the game"; using unwritten rules, that are often dictated by the 'winners'. The object of 'the game' is to "accumulate things"; mostly being wealth, position, status & power ( Both perceptual & tangible. ). The reason for this is the pervasive worship of the "almighty Dollar", as an ACTUAL iconic religious symbol ( The symbol of the 'Illuminati' being on the back of the U.S. Dollar Bill ! ). You TELL us that Paris Hilton is an 'issue'; & make us THINK that anybody cares, when very few actually do ! Mr. Holt - You ( & Brian, as well. ) need to stand up to your producers & TELL THEM what a Journalist is SUPPOSED to be ( Like an anchor recently did, refusing to do anymore 'Paris' stories ! ).

I second what Phil in Clearwater says. While such things as whether women or men talk more are interesting, there are far more important things going on that have been slipping under the radar.
For example: The controversy at the National Hurricane Center, which received an unannounced visit from federal officials early this week. This is because the feds aren't happy with Proenza's outspokenness regarding such issues as the fact that the satellite Quickscat, which has been aiding storm forecasts by precisely locating where landfalls would take place so people would know whether or not they need to evacuate. There have even been calls for Proenza to resign.
I've gotten news on this from The Weather Channel and from what I lovingly call the Faux News Network--and something funny is going on when Faux News is covering a substantive story that has been off Nightly's radar. The National Hurricane Center controversy would be a truly worthwhile story at this time because according to forecasts hurricane season should be heating up in the next few weeks due to the fact that the Atlantic waters will be hot enough to favor storm development.

Lester I guess there's mistaken Global Warming anymore.
I listen to the President ask Americans to support the troops and he gave a list of ways we could do that. I noticed that nothing was said about the Government supporting the troops as we notice with poor equipment and lack of medical care at Walter Reed. Now Americans are to pay taxes that are given to Iraq for Oil rights and we are to take care of the soldiers needs to. At lease it's good to know why our troops are in Iraq as we were told it was first WMDs then Iraq Freedom. Australia reports have cleared up that lie as it Iraq was invaded for the oils rights and knowing that Saddam was a weak leader it was the right time. President Bush did the right thing by commuting Libby's sentence just in time. If Libby had to go to jail for covering up that crimes and many others by the White House it might cause Bush and Cheney to be impeached. Now that Bush has taken on a Judge's job and pretty much told Judge Walton and the three Appeal Judges they don't know the law and he does. I only wish he had read the guidelines before just doing what he wanted. It's so much better when one reads directions then you don't make mistakes. Now Libby is left with going to his probation officer. As for the famous Pardon let's hope Bush reads the guidelines first or just do as he wants even if it's against the law. Libby is a free man but will always be a convicted felon.

Good Evening: 2 weeks ago I was boarded on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Anchorage. We boarded 30 minutes prior to departure and waited. As we sat at the gate, the pilot announced we would not be taking off at the scheduled time as we would arrive early - & that, he said, was part of the "on time arrival" data. So, if a flight arrives early it is considered against the airline's ontime record. We left 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time & still touched down almost 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled arrival time. We sat on the plane in Anchorage waiting to de-plane for about 25 minutes so that we could be considered ontime. One really needs to sort the data!

Libby.
Did Bush promise Libby a pardon before the fact?
Did Libby tell Bush he will talk from behind prison bars unless Bush lets him go? Did Libby blackmail Bush?

Like Lester Holt as a replacement for Brian. Campbell Brown may be a good news person, but her somewhat monotone, nasal tone is at times irritating.

Good Evening Again Mr.Holt, Regarding the report by George Lewis about the heatwave in the west. He was holding the temperature gage and it showed it was 116 degrees. Now that is very hot and I thought Mr. Lewis must be sweltering in the jacket he was wearing. But then again he didn't say he felt hot. (Just thought I would mention it.) Outside of who talks the most I do sometimes think women talk more than men, but I guess it depends on the subject matter. When it comes to somebodys favorite subject or person they can go on and on. ( I know for certain who I like to talk about all the time with regards to NBC news.) Anyway, Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt! Try to keep cool in all this heat! Peace to all!

At a time when a plethora of real and serious domestic and foreign issues should dominate coverage, NBC News finds time to report on .... who talks more, men or women. Of what value is this? What relevance? Intelligent viewers are sick of this non-news, this news-lite, this distracting pseudo-entertainment. Shame on you all for abdicating your public service role. Do you even know what news is anymore?

Good Evening Mr.Holt, First, I just want to thank you for your good work on Today, Nightly News and Weekend Today. You really work very hard and I enjoy your broadcasts. Being in the south I surely hope we receive some rain soon. All the real dry areas need a good solid rain. Anyway, looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to all!
