In Syria, girls march as timebomb ticks
The girls circle the stage in a nightclub outside of Damascus, holding hands in protective pairs as they march, always counterclockwise, at the same slow pace, one unenthusiastic step per second.
It’s 3 a.m., but bright as a hospital ward in here. The club owners leave on the fluorescent lights so customers can get a good look at what’s for sale. The girls’ faces are painted in slashes of pink blush. Their lipstick is drab browns and beiges. They want it that way, so it doesn’t distract from their eyes, accented with glittering splashes of emerald green and sapphire blue. Many girls connect their thin, shaped eyebrows with a black pencil, and have orange and yellow plastic flowers in their long hair, blackened with henna.
One girl, gawky and about 13, has eyeglasses tucked into the top of her tight, lilac sequined dress. Her sister, who says she’s 14, chews bubble gum and keeps borrowing the glasses. She can’t see when she puts them on and waves her hands in front of her, pretending to be blind. It makes the sisters laugh. They are bored circling all night. I guess they also want to forget where they are. Maybe it helps if you can’t see. The 14-year-old also has a mobile phone stuffed into her bra. She pulls it out when men, mostly from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, call her over to their tables to exchange ‘missed calls.’ The men call the next day and negotiate a price and a meeting place.
There are dozens of clubs just like this one the outskirts of Damascus -- a red light district built on the slender shoulders of little Iraqi girls in belly dancing costumes. The girls are nearly all Iraqi refugees forced into what U.N. relief agencies call “survival sex.” The reason why is cold math. There are 1.4 million Iraqi refugees in Syria. Syrian laws do not allow Iraqi refugees to work in Syria, which struggles to provide enough jobs for its own citizens. But Iraqi children can often slip under the law, especially if they work on the black market. They work to support their families. Many were traumatized even before they left Iraq, and had relatives murdered or kidnapped. Now they are forced into prostitution -- victims of war, victimized again every night.
Some of the girls we saw also looked very young, perhaps under six years old. The club owner told us they were younger sisters or cousins who had come to the club because they couldn’t find babysitters. But the little girls were dressed in tight costumes and gyrated in unbalanced pirouettes. They were apprentices and once on stage, everything has a price.
It is difficult to imagine how these girls will ever recover from the trauma of the war and subsequent exploitation. A senior U.N. official told me the refugee crisis is a ‘time bomb’ in the Middle East waiting to explode, creating rage that is building from Baghdad to the nightclubs of Damascus, rage directed mostly at the United States and its war in Iraq.

It's all Clinton's fault!

What this story shows is the bankruptcy of the Syrian culture. In the U.S. such child prostitution could not happen out in the open! Is the Syrian culture not essentially the same culture that breeds the butchery of terrorism which lead to the killing of 3000 people in New York and the killing innocent civilians around the world? The blame does not belong to the United States defending itself against terrorism by being in Iraq. The blame belongs to the adherents of a political/religious ideology in the Islamic world that truly despise and abuse women. What "time bomb"? It's the same culture that, long before this tragic situation, declared war on the West.

I understand these are terribly crimes these young women are being forced into however, On the other hand why do we not allow our troops to fight the war and not have to be slandered by our on citizens and congress. If our troops were allowed to take the necessary actions, they were trained for and worry about what the world thinks we would less personal and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan could be shortened or even over by now. This is the price we pay for being the world police and these young women will continue to pay these prices until we let our armed forces complete their work and rid the middle east of radicals.

HYPOCRITES. Some of these people look for a loophole in what they call allah's law. If you did it they would call you an infiudel and say you should be put to death, but it's all right if they do it. The Taliban were big on this, you could force a girl or woman into sex and if she didn't comply you lie and say that she was a prostiute and have her stoned to death or publicly beheaded. There's been a lot of Saudies and Kuwaities who raped their Philipina maids, and were called the Infiudels. They should put their Koran where their mouth is at and they can stick their oil up where the sun doesn't shine. We need to bring our people home.

it is sad to see how educated people can not reach to a positive consensus. as far as i think and i know most people do is that what is happenin in this world is not right. there is a war in every continent...either internal or external and we live our lives (including me) thinking all is well around us, because thats what we want to believe. its unfortunate what happened on 9/11 and its unfortunate what is happenin in Iraq. i'll mention the offical figure.Civilians U.S 9/11 : 3023 , Afghanistan : 3500, Iraq: around 70000 , COALITION troops around 6000. more than 80000 people have lost thier lives beacuse of this. and this is just an offical figure, its musch much more than this. think for a while, weather its worth all this, is this bringin any kind of comfort for anyone, this kind of war will only build hatred among ourselves. its high time that we bring peace to this world.

We are talking here about Iraqi refugee girls, not how long this has been going on in other countrys that we already know about and have done NOTHING.
Most of the refugees are women and children with no men to provide for or protect them.
Yes the Syrian Gov.should make some provesians for them, the UN and other groups,US included should make sure they have food and shelter, maybe even try to relocate some of them where they can at least work.
I do blame the U.S. Gov.if Bush had not started this unnessary war in Iraqi we would not have the refugees.
It is true Saddam had to go,but not just at that time.Bush knew there were no WMD'S.That is not what he went after,he went there because Saddam had tryed to assinate his dad,I would have wanted him to but I would planned a little better than what was done.
He wants to give them their freedom.like ours, but in the process we have lost a lot of ours.

MUSLIM WOMEN ARE REVERED BY THEIR HUSBANDS AND CHILDREN.THEY DO NOT DISPLAY THEMSELVES ON CAR BONNETS OR MODELLING RAMPS NEITHER DO THEY CRAVE TO IMITATE MEN LIKE THE WESTERN DO.PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT ON MUSLIM WOMEN AND ISLAM IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT.ALSO, IF YOU POST COMMENTS, DO NOT REHASH THE PROPONGADA PRINTED IN YOUR NEWS PRINT OR SHOWN IN WESTERN TV.REMEMBER THERE ARE VERY FEW MUSLIM OLD AGE HOMES IN THE WORLD YET IN WESTERN COUNTRIES THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF OLD AGE HOMES.EFFECTIVELY YOUR CHILDREN HAVE WASHED THEIR HANDS OFF THEIR FATHERS AND MOTHERS JUST AS YOU(THE WESTERNER) WASHED YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR PARENTS.

After 911 we realized the fact that America was a target by an unseen enemy willing to spill blood of innocences on our streets. Our reaction to that day was key to our future.Destroying their bases of operations in Afganistan was a nessessary thing to do.Unfortunately nearly everything we've done since then, has been a misguided mess, especially in Iraq. The blame for this clearly belongs to George Bush and his advisors.Bush should be removed from office as well as Dick Chaney and face war crimes tribunal for the civilian loss of life in Iraq. Why do we continue to allow our sons and daughters to die (as Bush puts it) for the Iraqie people. If they wanted to rid themselves of Saddam it was their place and cause not ours.No one wants to believe our President could be using our military under false pretences and our soldiers have died because of his erronous forneigh policy.Whether this policy was the result of ignorance or intent we can denie the reality of what we've done.We as Americans who have supported and entrusted our leaders to protect and uphold our values are faced with the reality of an administration in love with war.

So, it seems to me as though most of you believe that Child Prostitution only began in Damascus as a result of the war in Iraq? That's ridiculous! These child rapists are disgusting people, but this behavior stems (at least in part) from a backward culture that has ZERO respect for the personal freedoms of others especially women. I'm not what you would call a "political" person, but as I see it the middle-east was like a pot getting ready to boil over. Bush made the hard decision to intervene and try to keep everybody from getting burned. The reality is that Afghanistan alone would never have been enough to effect a change in the Mideast. It's not a question of countries or national boundaries. The entire region is the problem and needs to be dealt with for the sake of every other country on this planet. If not us then who? Russia? Their own citizen's don't even want to serve in the military, and who can blame them. Maybe China? China is way too dependent on that region for oil. Any European nation? None have the strength to get this done. Anyone else? We certainly can't expect Muslims to police their own. All I ever hear is that "moderate" Muslims don't have the same beliefs as the extremists and don't condone their actions. OK, what are these "moderates" doing to stop these psychopaths or even to change things. The answer is nothing. Bottom Line: this war was going to happen anyway and I'd rather have our troops fighting extremists in Iraq and not in Iowa. Just, for a moment, try to imagine what might have happened in the years since 9/11 if these animals didn't already know what happens when you attack America. One last thing, for those of you who can't shut up about how ashamed you are of the president, this country, and the "War on Terror" and feel embarrassed to be an American, remember this: You are kept warm and safe by the blanket of security that this war is providing. If you are that strong in your convictions then go elsewhere. Is your shame so easily put aside? For their sakes, I hope the shame these young Iraqi girls are bound to feel can be just easily put aside.

I am so sick and tired of damn near all of you placing the blame on someone else. Take a look in the mirror first. It is people like you, and you know who you are, that make the world the way it is.
I remember the Golden Rule, do you? I guess not.
Anyhow, you are the ones who criticize what is being done and you are the reason it is happening. Anyhow, I hope that you all enjoy speaking English and be glad that you are. If it was not for those who protect you (and we ask ourselves why everyday) you could be speaking German, Japanese, or even Arabic. What you are speaking of in the above comments is true no matter where you go but when you are being racist and stupid then you have what comes to you. Get a grip on reality and stop being stupid. Nothing will ever amount to what you think is supposed to be a “perfect” world. There will always be problems and it is people like you that want it fixed but are not willing to do anything about it. So stop being critical of what is done for you and how it is completed when you request it to be done.

Uh Charlie Seto check the current unemployment figures in Syria. You did? Good so you saw how few jobs Syrians have much less the ability to employ 1.4million Iraqi refugees forced out because???? Yes we attacked! WOW. What a revelation Chuckie.
Simple for those too stupid to get it....
We attack and FIRE THE ENTIRE IRAQI ARMY of over 400,000 pissed off out of work well trained soon to be insurgents. We dont have a plan for the end of the war or the reconstruction. People leave to avoid death and all are subject to exploitation we see here. Gee that was hard to comprehend.
Now the truth. It is our fault since this wouldnt have occurred had we not attacked. Some of us must take resposiblity right Mr President.
Refugees of war are just that....a result of war.
The Syrians should close these clubs and WE should leave Iraq and hopefully one day the IRAQI's can go back home. My my it so difficult to understand. Yep GOD BLESS US ALL. He only blesses the US of course. Religion is war and always has been. Ban religion and the world is a better place. Of course that wont happen!!! We are all toooooooooooo afraid to think that it might be better not to believe in a deity. We are so scared. None of us no the fear of these children being exploited. NONE OF US!

For those of you, who are blind, Saddam was raping Iraqs young girls, and when he got through with them, he had them killed. I know this for a fact from the military boys serving over there, before Saddam was ousted. The sad part, the parents of these girls, could not stop it.
But before you start pointing fingers at Bush, what about what Bill Clinton did in the white house, but his oral sex was free, and he got up and lied about it before admitting to the truth. I think that is so discusting. And what makes it worse, is Hillary is still standing beside her man, even through all the other affairs he had.
And just maybe if Bill had been a real president, he would have done something about all the bombings, before Bush was elected. I think ppl have forgotten why Bush was elected 6 years ago, as they were fed up with Bill Clinton and all his sexual affairs. But Hillary is no better, by standing beside him. Just tell me what did Bill do for our country, the last 2 years our country went into a depression over it. And how would you feel if Bill Clinton, was involved with younger girls for sex. I would put nothing past him. So looks like Hillary has failed too.
But just feel lucky we are fighting the terrorists in Iraq, as it could be well here in the USA. BS with the oil in Iraq, Clinton had Exxon in the White House 11 times and got lots of support and money from them, but I guess it is okay, for Bill to do whatever he wanted to do. So just think back to when Bill Clinton was in as President, he sure did not have the guts to get out and fight the terrorists then, no he was a chicken who cut and run, and turned his back to what was happening. he also sit Bush up to take care of the mess. As he was a coward who would not do anything about it.
It is awfully strange that Bush was not a president 9 months when all hell broke loose and 9/11 happened. Things just do not happen like this over night. So just think back to 9/11/01. And read up on all the bombings that took place while Bill Clinton was in and did nothing about it
God Bless American and God Bless our Millitary troops.

There is a backlash in Islam today where Muslim youth are asking, "Why are we so behind in progress and poor as nations if Allah is so great?" They know the answer will undoubtedly end many of the current practices of Islam, so they are enraged to come to grips with change.
The reason that America is so rich and inventive is because women are allowed to work honorably here. There is no other greater difference between America and the rest of the world. Speaking as a woman, Europe is not as safe a place in the workplace or walking around by yourself.
In Saudia Arabia men are starting to protest at how unreasonable it is to drive their daughters everywhere. Yes, women are not allowed to drive there, and the true inconvenience of this practice is starting to reveal itself. In Afghanistan, if a man kills someone, he is not punished. Rather a woman from his family is forced to marry a man from the crime victim's family. Usually the woman is beaten up and enslaved in her new household. Obviously, this has not deterred men from choosing to murder in the future.
When women are not respected as human beings an entire society suffers from their lack of achievements. Rape is very prevalent in countries where women are completely covered and separate, emphasizing that rape is truly not a sexual urge rather a desire to destroy and humiliate.
In America, the Mormon religion emphasizes several of the values of Islam that are looked down upon by the majority, such as polygamy, overly-modest and unpractical dress, early marriage, arranged marriage, and not saying "no" to men or disagreeing with their decisions. Notice that most of the rules apply to women, as apparently a means to focus the responsibility of human sexuality on women's soldiers. So they underlying notion is men are weak, but given all the power. You might be surprised that Utah has one of the highest rape rates in the United States probably as a direct result of the concept that women are second-class citizens.
So, we have learned from that modest dress does not deter rape, since societies in which this code of dress is enforced are patriarchal and also view women as second-class citizens that belong at home.
Prostitution in the Muslim world may feed little girls for the night, but it signals their death as well. As virginity is mandatory for brides. Rape victims are even killed to extinguish the existence of involuntary non-virgins. So the future for these girls is very dark. Muslim woman have allowed this darkness to go on for far to long and even embraced it.

The age of consent is 16 in the US. I don't see any difference between 13 and 16. Personally I hope they start an aids epidemic and wipe out all those deviants that pay for sex and their families.
As for being prostitutes well they'll probably have a better life than if they lived as normal Iraqi's. At least they don't have to worry about Uncle Abdallah parking a car bomb at the family reunion.
Nearly every senator and congress person approved the war. They all made the descision to not just GW's fault. You liberals need to get honest once in awhile and check the voting records.
I'm so sick of liberals constantly blaming everyone but themselves or their party members. Clinton could have taken a chainsaw to Monica after raping her in public, sodomized a entire cub scout troop on live pay per view, and burned down a convent after raping everyone in it and there would not be one liberal voter in the entire country that would ever admit he did anything wrong.

Whether or not these children are Iraqi or not is irrelevant. The fact that these are CHILDREN is.
Whether or not the men in the 'audience' are Saudi or Kuwaitie or some other nationality is irrelevant.
ANYONE who victimises a child should be castrated with a rusty knife, then drawn & quartered.
Unfortunately as someone else pointed out above this is not a *new* phenomenon and probably happens wherever you find displaced or 'poor' people.
And rightly or wrongly much of the Middle East is damn pissed off at the US and Bush in particular.
Personally I think it's the hight of arrogance to think we can go into a culture completely different from our own & try to impose *our* ideas or democracy on them.
The only hope of that working is if that culture is *already* in the verge of making that leap *on their own* in the first place. And if they are ready we can't then complain about the people/groups that get elected because *we* don't like them.
After all isn't that what democracy is all about, letting people freely make a choice then dealing with the outcome of that choice?

I cannot believe some of you, seriously you think AMERICA IS DOING THE RIGHT THING? you just as screwed up as the country itself. How about use your 140.000 troops for transporting Lifes essentials, building structures, not BOMBING AND KILLING INNOCENT IRAQ's
Flip it around if america had oil and Iraq came and invaded you to STEAL your oil, and your country is inadiquite of defending itself against them i would EXPECT civilians to start taking into their own hands JUST like some of the "terrorist" are doing in Iraq.
I have seen numerous videos of iraqi citizens praising australian soldiers and calling American the enemy even though they are on the same side. why is that?
because australia is heading the re contruction effort while america blows up their country.
in your country you have people complaining its too expensive for fuel to drive to the local take away shop, or your internet isnt fast enough, or you want to drive a car that does 15mpg.
i know, insted of spending the ... 20 billion?? (not sure of figure) on the war, How much would Iraq/ and other middle east country's benefit from $20 billion?
im sure even some MIGHT get reasonable drinking water for that?
Or what even if with the 20 billion you build the iraq's refinery's so they can process their OWN oil and sell it to americans insted of stealing it?
doing what you are doing is going to come back and bite you americans in the ass, i just hope the rest of the west doesn't have to pay for your selfishness and greed and nondesire to HELP the 3rd world countries you helped creat.
i hate america and i have no respect for its citizens in electing George.W.Bush as you Chief in Commandor.
I only wish one day that the west feels a small percentage of what day to day life is like in the middle east.
i hope YOUR towns get bombed , and i hope YOUR children die just like Iraq is facing now purely ONLY because OF YOUR PRESENCE!!
ALSO are you forgetting U.S HELPED Saddam into Power? just like now how their are trying to Back a dodged government who is just a front?
i believe in karma and you will get yours.

It is so sad and distressing to hear that. Young Iraqi girls as little as below 6 years are forced into prostitution. Bush has caused unimaginable suffering to the Iraqi people most of which are never reported. We hear occasional news like this, the fact is that we get very little or no news of the suffering of the Iraqi people except knowing that 20, 30, 40,50, 100, 150 people are killed in some incidents. It is nothing more than a number everyday we are used to. Behind every death, there is a story, he/she was a mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, wife, husband of someone. These people are dying without ever knowing what wrong did they do. They did no harm to the USA or anybody else in this world. They never knew why they were dying except that Bush was responsible for their death for their unbearable and unending suffering.
The only consolation for these people, however small will be the punishment of this mad maniac called bush. He deserves to be hanged as many times as the number of innocent iraqis and americans who died for nothing but for his madness.
