Heat of the Moment

Hello from New York, where at mid afternoon it is still a relatively comfortable 88-degrees, but our colleagues at NBC Weather Plus tell us the eastern part of the country is about to be gripped by its own heat wave, and cities from Chicago to New York are gearing up to respond to heat-related emergencies.  Hot weather and wildfires will top our news tonight.  In the west, folks are enduring yet another day of triple-digit temperatures in many places, and as expected the hot, dry conditions have kindled a rash of fires in Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and other states.  We will have coast-to-coast coverage of the heat tonight on Nightly News.

John Yang will examine the growing dissatisfaction among Republicans on Capitol Hill with how the president is handling the war and what it means for efforts to set a deadline for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

We will look at the recent softening of gas prices in this country at a time you would expect prices to soar.

Tom Costello is in the Seattle area tonight where Boeing will publicly unveil its new 787 airliner. It's no coincidence the rollout was scheduled for 7-8-07. About half the plane is made of lightweight carbon fibers, and together with a new generation of engines the 787 is expected to burn significantly less fuel then current planes. (In the name of full disclosure, one of those engine offerings is made by our parent company General Electric). For passengers, bigger windows and higher cabin humidity are supposed to make for a more pleasurable flying experience.  Tom will tell us how the plane has become the fastest selling new commercial aircraft in history, and why it's being called a "game changer" for Boeing.

As always, thanks for clicking-on to see what we're up to. We'll look for you tonight on NBC Nightly news.

Thanks for Martin Savidge's upbeat piece last night about the urban pioneers/entrepreneurs who've been coming into New Orleans, establishing homes and businesses, and creating jobs. After seeing the good news in the report I feel a little better about her prospects. Not that I've forgotten or gone into denial that there's still much that needs to be done and Katrina recovery still needs to be considered a substantive national campaign issue.

Thanks, Martin, for the upbeat story from New Orleans. Good news is a most welcome change coming from there. Excellent work, as always.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Regarding the report on the Iraq War and the breaking ranks of the President's own party. The number of losses of our military is such a grim reminder of how many brave and dedicated men and women our country has lost over the course of this war. I agree that the strategy has become a failure and we need to start withdrawing our troops. But the government of Iraq must begin to make more progress is securing their own country. Our military cannot be there indefinetly to help them. They have to find a way to help themselves. Also the report by Tom Aspell on the Israeli baseball team I found very nice and inspiring. It is certainly a change from what he usually covers in the Middle East region. Even though they don't have words in Hebrew for the terms of the game they still looked like they were having fun and that is the most important thing. Three home runs isn't bad! Go team! Finally, the report on the doctor on Hilton Head Island was truly wonderful. He is really making a difference in helping all those people who cannot afford the medical treatments. His statement of what matters "who you help along the way" is so very true. He is doing great work and I hope he continues to do so. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to all!
