TROUBLE IN SPACE?
If they call Tom Hanks in for help, we'll know this is a serious problem on board the space station. So far, it seems to be a data issue with some complications. We have Tom Costello on the case, and he'll report for us.
From Gaza, today's headline appears to be this: the standing government appears split in two, and it looks like a militant Islamist state will take up residence next to America's most important ally in the Middle East. We're on the story, as we are other disparate topics like immigration, breakfast cereals for children and hidden, residential pot farms in California.
Please tune in tomorrow night as well, despite the fact that I'll be enjoying a day off with my family. My last day off was during the Eisenhower administration, so I'm pretty excited. Those sure were simpler times.
And please take time to read today's Medal Of Honor recipient biography. Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham was kind enough to tell me last night that he is following their stories on this Web site, which helps make this pursuit of ours very worthwhile.
We hope you'll join us for our Thursday broadcast tonight.

I don't think the ISS will ever be completed. We should have had it fully operational over a decade ago ! We have the Russians & others helping us because we don't want to pay for it ourselves. Meanwhile, the Russians can't do anything right because their best scientists & engineers were 'culled' long ago by the Communists, whom ruined Russia. We can't even build STS launchers right, because we insist on "low - bidding" the system ( Which is how airline security got to its pathetic 'state', pre - 9/11 ! ). Maybe we should let our scientists & engineers run NASA, instead of "paper - pushers" ?!

Have a relaxing 3-day weekend and a happy Father's Day! And don't eat anything the Center for Science in the Public Interest has told you is bad for you, which covers about everything except bitter vetch. :)
The Center...., which annoyingly seems to see itself as an American Nanny regarding what Americans eat, has been one of my pet peeves for years. A talk show host I don't normally agree with said something that makes sense yesterday--he said he imagines that that organization must be composed entirely of anorexics. And, I'll add, grouchy anorexics, because they've gone without delicious food for so long it's made them peevish enough to want to deprive others of that pleasure.
I mean, if parents don't want their children eating sugary breakfast cereals, they don't have to buy them. And of course, people who find Chinese, Mexican, or Italian food, or movie theater popcorn (all of which have been rapped by The Center...at one time or another) too unhealthy for their tastes don't have to eat them. But The Center...(and other busy-body groups regarding food) should stay out of other people's stomachs. They should not nag people about foods they think they shouldn't eat, or call for companies to stop advertising such food, or for the government to step in.
It's time for The Center.... and similar groups to shut up.

The situation in Palestine is of little surprise, the "birth-pains" of democracy as it were(with apologies to the secretary of state), the problem can be traced back to the curious detachment of assertive American diplomacy these last seven years. The immigration debate today could have taken place in 1840, as contemporary politicians resemble the "Know-nothings" of that bygone era. If one thing remains constant throughout history it would be an ever-present fear of change in a nation of immigrants.
At any rate, the frozen north is more interested in why our representative is serving constituents in Florida, and numerous corruption charges with state reps. These days tourism, the sockeye salmon run, and Pebble Mine occupy the addled minds of Alaska news junkies. Keep informing the American people of the events which matter most, a job which you have done admirably thus far, cheers!

Personally it might be down played but I think the space station is in serious jeapordy.
I would like to know if Daimler-Benz and others that put this together are aiding and what is going on behind the scenes. I just see the live feeds from MSN with the crew trying to correct the issue and it does not look good to me. They are showing monitors to the screen so the ground crew can see and having problems with the batteries dying on the hand held devise?
Opps sorry we need to save Iraq attack Iran and N. Korea because they are axis of evil... Switch batteries.
You guys on the space station its 1:11 EST I have been watching you for the last 3 days you guys ROCK!

Once again I notice a decided and disturbing lack of context in your reporting tonight on Gaza. Unlike Bush, Hamas was actually um… ELECTED by the people and it can be argued that it has been the Israeli and U.S. intervention in the “internal” affairs of Gaza that has sparked all of this recent violence. Oh… but I guess the only ‘real’ democracy the US supports is that which results in the election of puppet governments willing to sign away all mining rights to U.S. companies, right?
I also love your use of the word ‘radical’ Islamic state as if what Israel did to Lebanon last year was perfectly okay. Yeah… I guess the Israelis only used phosphorus artillery shells, targeted clearly marked ambulances, bombed all of Lebanon claming a Hezbollah bunker was under every apartment block, and even deliberately attacked a U.N. outpost. Is all that OK to you? Did the words of Zbigniew Brzezinski on Larry King “I suspect that the [Israeli] government is somewhat weak and wants to demonstrate that it is tough. Usually, weak governments tend to overreact.” make their actions Ok just because it was only Arabs being killed? By all context you can politely label Israel a radical terrorist state, can’t you? Are bombs dropped from F-16 fighter jets on to populated areas somehow OK?
It saddens me that Both the US and Israel are guilty of the very one-sided things the Islamic countries say. The US has trained and Armed Fatah Islamic fighters in Gaza and Israel attacked Hamas position as well in support of Fatah all to sway internal affairs. Is former President Carter the only one willing to speak out on this? Where were your questions as to where the Secretary of State was in all of this? Talk about a little too late? But since peace isn’t what we wanted in Gaza she is no where to be found.

There's an old proverb the Israelis should be familiar with: "as ye sow, so shall ye reap."
The Israelis chose a long time ago to deal with the Palestineans through domination by brute force instead of through cooperation. They have been reaping the consequences of their actions for over 60 years.

Brian,
Happy Father's Day! No doubt your family will celebrate you in a most wonderful manner much like I will be celebrating with my dad. Do little girls and their daddy ever really grown up?
The segment on golf and the veterans was inspiring. The PGA does a tremendous amount of charitable work with most of it never being publicized. Way to go PGA!

Good Evening Again Mr.Williams, The report by Tom Aspell from Jerusalem was definetly gruesome. Seeing and hearing the militants shouting and firing off their weapons shows that violence seems to be the only method of communicating any sort of message to the world. It is frightening to think how all these groups could foster from one main area. I don't know how the civilians can take much more. On another note the trouble with the space station sounds quite serious. If it can't be fixed I hope they can bring the ten people aboard the station safely back down to earth. Anyway, I hope you have a nice day off Friday with your family. And I hope you have a Happy Fathers Day on Sunday! Thank you for the braodcast Mr.Williams! Peace to all!

Childhood mental illness. My heart goes out to the parents who have to deal with this illness. It did no service to anyone to have that self important pompous windbag describe medication as "child abuse".I'm sure there is need for caution when giving children any medication but not medicating that little girl would have really been child abuse.

With the DOJ in breaking all the laws lately it was good to see Judge Walton honor the oath he took even with the threats to his life from the Libby supporters. I did notice the FBI didn't get involved with these threats to the Judge and his family. If only Mr. Libby had told the truth about the direction he was given by his boss. Bush has 6 weeks to pardon the convicted criminal, if he does he should also pardon Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham and all the other loyal team players. At lease Fingers Foley is safe he is free to continue his illegal acts without any charges. I wonder when the Attorney General will get around to protecting the children of America from child molesters.
I thought Hamas had won the election. Seems like if the Middle East has a Democratic election but the White House doesn't like the winner there has to be another election until the person the US wants in gets the votes. Maybe Karl Rove could help out as he was successful in denying minorities the right to vote, fixing voting machines and bring false charges against Democrats just to make sure his man gets in office. With the new Bush Constitution and the new Justice System maybe the White House can get Iraq to follow these policies.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, I read the headline about the fighting in Gaza. The whole Middle East seems to be one big fighting arena. When are they ever going to stop fighting. I feel like yelling at them to STOP IT NOW OR ELSE!! But I don't think that would do any sort of good. An agreement needs to be reached and very soon especially for the innocent people living in the region. These people endure this everyday and they do not need to be hurting anymore. Also I hope they solve the problem with the space station. It would be nice if Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise knew how to fix the station. I'm sure they wish they knew how. Anyway, looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to all!
