Terror Plot

Good day from New York on a very busy news day.

Today's announcement from the FBI that it had broken-up a plot to blow-up the aircraft fuel supplies at New York's JFK Airport was another one of those reminders of what an attractive terror target New York continues to be.

Living here you become used to police occasionally checking your briefcase for explosives as you head to the subway turnstile.  Most of us no longer do a double take when police anti-terror squads in helmets, flak jackets and automatic weapons in their hands suddenly appear in front of popular tourist attractions.  Even the regular convoys of 25 police cars that criss-cross the city with lights and sirens massing on high-valued "target" are more an object of amusement then anything else. My wife and I call it "cops on parade."

Intellectually we all understand that there is a good chance we will be hit again, but yet we tend sometimes to live our lives in a collective sense of denial.  The alternative: dwelling on the possibility of another day like September 11th, 2001, would be crippling.

Plots like the one unraveled today briefly awaken us to the reality. U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf called it "one of the most chilling plots imaginable.  The devastation that would have been caused is unthinkable." She's right. It is hard to think about.

We will of course have full coverage of the alleged JFK plot and the four men who the FBI says were behind it.

Also this evening we'll be showing dramatic pictures out of Germany where protesters on the streets in advance of the G-8 meeting showered police with rocks and beer bottles. Police fired back with water cannons and tear gas.

We'll have the latest on TB patient Andrew Speaker and new information we've learned on what he was told about his condition and how it may have affected the timing of his trip to Europe.

Has Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg become more outspoken since becoming the only woman on the court?  Pete Williams offers a fascinating look at her apparent change of style.

Later in the broadcast: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Band" 40-years later. Now THAT was an album.

Thanks for checking-in. I hope you can join us tonight for Nightly News.

I appreciate your coverage of what appears to be another broken - up terror plot in the U.S. I know why you think this is important. My problem w/ this is that I don't believe it's factual ( Referring to the gov't.'s reporting of it - not NBC's coverage. ). Having both military & civilian security experience; I can tell you that there's ANOTHER reason why no Terrorist attack has actually been attempted in the U.S., since 9/11. Before 9/11 - there were a dozen Terrorist groups in - country, USING us for FUND - RAISING; to support their overseas operations. Al - Q'aeda didn't then need us for this, as they were getting support from the Saudi Wahhabi; as well as groups in Egypt & Pakistan. Thye were the ONLY group attacking us. After 9/11 - they also now need us for fund - raising. Also, the CIA; w/ its connections to Al - Q'aeda & Pakistan's ISI Group, from the 80's Soviet / Afghan War ... is keeping Al - Q'aeda 'contained' in Central Asia, so that Bush - 43' can have his so - called "War on Terror" ( Bush & Musharraf can 'take out' Bin - Laden anytime they want to ! ).

Good Evening Mr.Holt, It seems as if the good news is hard to find sometimes. Regarding Richard's report on the fighting in the Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, it is terrible the innocent civilians are caught within this battle. Richard stated that there is only one doctor to tend to the people. I wonder how much longer these people can hold out because he said the situation is so very desperate. I hope that a solution for a peaceful end to this fighting can be found soon. Then there are clashes in Germany over the G-8 Summit coming to that country. The plot to blow up the jet fuel supply at JFK Airport which thankfully was stopped by authorities and those involved are in custody. I really hope for the day when we won't have to worry about such things occuring anywhere in the world. That should be a day to cherish because for example we could have reports from Richard in the Middle East saying, everything seems normal peaceful here. I guess I always hope for the best. Anyway,Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Stay safe Richard! Peace to all!

What a nightmare that would have been. I was born in Manhattan, and still feel a place in my heart for New York. This, had it happened would have been the straw that broke the camels' back.

Bush constantly said that if we don't fight the terrorists over there we will have to fight the terrorists here. If we withdraw from Iraq then the terrorists will follow the troops home.

Well Georgie Boy, the terrorist are here now planning attacks on American soil and our troops are over there protecting foreign soil.

What are you going to do about it?

Mr. Holt,
I think you summarized the thoughts of many today with respect to another terrorist attack on NY. We must continue to live our lives to the fullest each and every day otherwise without attacking the terrorists have won and most of us would never get out of bed in the morning.

Had not heard "cops on parade" but may just have to borrow that in the future.
Regards

Good Evening Mr.Holt, It is really frightening what the world has now become with all these threats to our safety. Yet if you allow it to consume you then living day to day would be impossible. One has to continue with working and spending leisure time either with family or friends and not allow these people to destroy our hearts and minds. Each day we have here on earth is precious and we need to hold on to every moment. I have visited New York many times and always had a wonderful time. It is an exciting city with many things to see and do. These groups may try to hurt the city, but they will never take away its heart and spirit. It has too much strengh to ever be broken ever! Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Holt. Peace to all!
(PS. Even though the sound did not work when Richard's report was to be aired during "Weekend Today" this morning that is okay, because I saw him do a live report on MSNBC. And when asked if he was a safe enough distance from the battle sounds. He said they were on the outskirts and seemed to indicate they were a safe enough distance and gave a smile. As a loyal fan I always hope he is safe.)
