Sesame Street, a Scooter, a princess, a hero
I just came back from accomplishing something of a career goal: I just taped a segment for Sesame Street... How can the rest of the day not feel like a bit of a letdown? Having been loyal members of the Sesame Street family while raising our kids -- appearing on the show is an honor. Then again, so is my day job, to wit:
Scooter Libby. 30 months, despite so many character references. Some on the Web are finding it odd that Fred Thompson (who raised money for his defense) was not among them. David Gergen will join us for some perspective tonight. David Gregory will report from the G-8, where he will highlight the president's comments on Putin at today's press event. We'll look at Democrats and faith, the military reserve home front, and the controversy in the U.K. over Princess Diana's final moments. We have a fine broadcast planned for tonight.
A word about today's profiled Medal of Honor recipient: Bud Bucha is one of my closest friends among all recipients. It's been a pleasure getting to know him, as it has all of them. His story is a special one. Good news arrived today in the form of a letter from Gen. Perry Smith (Retired), who is the secretary of our board: he reports that by highlighting these men and their bios and stories on the Daily Nightly, sales of the book have risen on Amazon. If we truly played any part in that, it's wonderful news. My goal is to get their stories out to as many people as possible. Imagine if I said something like "it makes a perfect Father's Day gift!" I would just never do something like that.
Miles to go before we sleep. I hope you can join us for Nightly News tonight.

In the NN vodcast of June 5 2007, you mentioned one of Germany's darkest times, the time of "Lebensborn". In a Germany that is coming together with the once bitter enemies and tries to reconcile and befriend with neighbouring countries and the US and Russia, an American television station with high quality - like NBC is - shouldn't bring back the old stereotype of bad Germans. That's frivolous and cheap journalism at its best. That's a thing of history and should stay there.

Your talk tonight at the Marble Collegiate Church tonight was great - and it was a double thrill to find out that the lovely poised young woman sitting in our row was your daughter.
I expected an evening of good banter, acute observations and fine discussion - and you did not disappoint, but what really struck me was the warmth that you projected. Your family (including your father) and friends are all very lucky that you are a part of their lives.

Every story was good tonight, but I was most concerned with two:
-- The sobering statistics on the failure of Bush's surge in Iraq, leaving me so angry that I can hardly sit here and type.
-- Bush's antagonistic words toward Russia, leaving me wondering if this is the best time to be picking another fight we're going to lose.
Is it too much to expect better?

I was more than a little upset with Bob Faw's report on Libby's trial. Near the end his statement of "Plame's outting" bordered on the unbelievable. IF Plame HAD been 'outed', in other words, been exposed as a COVERT CIA operative, WHY didn't Fitzgerald ever convince EITHER of the grand juries to hand down an indictment? I suppose ALL CIA covert ops have their name on their Langley parking space as Plame did, or had a vanity license plate advertising where they work? If Libby lied, ok, he should pay the price. But c'mon NBC please DON'T try to hide an editorial comment in what you present as 'hard news'

Brian,
Thank you! You made 30 of my 45 minutes on the elliptical machine at the gym fly by tonite, no small acomplishment.
I was very much captivated by 3 segments in particular
1. The Democratic debate that candidates Clinton, Edwards & Obama participated in where topics like faith played a prominent role. Would be most interested in seeing that type of debate format once the parties candidates are offically nominated. Views on their faith and the chance to see the more personal side of the candidates would be a breathe of fresh air that I dare say would interest many Americans (hint hint hint)
2. The indepth piece on the WWII Norway children where I will first admit my ignorance to the whole topic. My outrage must be a mere speck compared to the victims and the attitude of the Norwegian government is a travesty. How can they claim it is too late to do anything? Even if not a single one of the children were still alive it is never too late. Can we PLEASE have a follow up on this story? Let's make this a issue that stirs up a worldwide public outcry for justice for these victims.
3. Princess Diana's legacy and the photos, wherever she is I can only imagine how proud she must be of her wonderful sons. I remember vividly the night of the crash, having just returned from West Point where my parents & I had attended the last summer band concert highlighted by the 1812 Overture complete with canons and fireworks. I turned on the tv and upon hearing the tragic news of the accident was flipping channels for more coverage and came up on your coverage that evening with the ultimate announcement of her death. It was that evening that I became a loyal follower of your work. The documentary in question here has no business including any of the pictures or footage. Let the woman rest in peace. Can the lure of the British pound be so important that morals and good taste be damned? I must believe the producers know they have gone too far. I mean after all when even the British tabloids consider the pictures taboo you know just how low the producers have sunk --- pond scum is seeing daylight in comparison to these jerks. I can only hope our good British friends boycott the show.
I know, I've been very wordy tonite....what can I say, it's rare I get to see the entire broadcast.
btw.....super cool about Sesame Street. Did you get to meet Big Bird and Oscar and Cookie Monster? Can we please have a reminder when it airs?

Sesame Street - what an honor. And now you'll be on all the best-of shows from now to whenever, along with Stevie Wonder and Julia Roberts and a host of other cultural icons. You'll have to make sure you secure video for your grandkids, I'm sure!

Good Evening Again Mr.Williams, Regarding the story about the families dealing with their loved ones serving in the Middle East. It was heartbreaking to hear that little girl keep saying she wanted her daddy to come home. It is so very hard on the families and I do hope that all the military will come home soon. Secondly, the report about the children conceived for the "master race". It was horrible how those children were treated and abandoned by their mothers. That man was very fortunate to have walked out of that asylum when we was twenty. It is nice to know that these people have found solace with eachother. Finally, hearing how the candidates speak about prayer and faith. Prayer does help and in this day and time with the world at the state it is in right now. Praying for peace is certainly a good thing to do. Thank you for the broadcast Mr. Williams. I hope you had fun on Conan O'Brien's show. Peace to all!

Nice newscast tonight. But, word of advice: If you're going to have a reporter report on religious matters, she should know what she's talking about. Saying Obama "quoted the Bible" when he said, "I am my brother's keeper. I am my sister's keeper" is boneheadedly wrong. Cain, after he killed Abel and was asked about it, said, "I am not my brother's keeper." Small word, yes; BIG difference, Oh yes.

Bush Commenting that Putin has derailed democratic reform. does that not sound like the pot calling the kettle black? Just an old saying folks, no discrimination. Bush is a stupid little man with little man ways. Is it 2009 yet?

Good Evening Mr. Williams, First of all that must have been fun taping the segment for Sesame Street. Secondly, I really don't think that seeing Princess Diana's final moments in a documentary is necessary. It was a very tragic event, but she should not be shown in that state. They should be respectful to her sons Prince William and Prince Harry and not air these pictures. I myself will always remember when that tragic event happened because I was on a trip with my mother in Paris from August 28th to September 8th 1997. And what both of us saw and how we found out about the event during the day of August 31st will always be in my mind. And what we experienced where we were in the city. I believe she should be remembered fondly for the birth of her sons and for the causes she cared about in her life. She was very lovely and stylish. May she rest in peace. Finally, thank you again for the posting of Medal of Honor recipient Captain Paul Bucha. He certainly is derserving and should be honored. Looking forward to the broadcast. Peace to all!

Bush has little room to talk about democratic reform in Russia. Both democracies are fading: one to try to preserve national sovereignty, the other to gain absolute power at all costs. It has been the U.S. that has been acting like a mirror image of the old Soviet empire, not the Russians themselves. Secret prisons, torture, rigged elections, a fairly tame media, and oh yeah... a little something like invading other countries on drummed up false charges.
