The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

POPCORN STORMS

We had elaborate plans for tonight's broadcast.  The idea was this: since we originate from this spectacular building (30 Rock) each night, why not take to the roof and highlight the City of New York, our headquarters most nights of the week?  That was until a line of "popcorn" thunderstorms (so named by meteorologists because they can pop up and explode out of nowhere given the right atmospheric conditions...like today) rolled through the New York area during our afternoon editorial meeting.  Our weather, usually west to east, is today northeast to southwest.  Flight delays at JFK are now officially posted at four hours, LaGuardia and Newark slightly less. Radar has been of no use because where there are no storms now -- there will be intense storms in 30 minutes.  We're going to make a NASA-like "go/no go" decision in the next few minutes...this will be fun.

To go with our coverage package tonight on New York, Rehema Ellis has a great piece on an educational success story [editor's note: you can read a blog from the principal below], and we spent the morning with the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg.  He takes the subway to work most mornings, and so did we.

In other news tonight, there's the fight to save an immigration deal, the so-called "honor killing" in London, the new data on an aging American generation, the first FDA-approved over-the-counter diet drug (there are complications) and what we're calling "watchgate"...did wildly enthusiastic Albanians steal the President's watch, or did he remove it for safekeeping?  It was actually a topic at the White House briefing today.

Please take time to read today's Medal of Honor recipient biography.  We are watching the skies and talking to the WNBC-TV forecast center here in New York. We'll have a fine broadcast either way...indoors or out!  We hope you can join us for the Tuesday edition of Nightly News tonight.

Regarding Mayor Bloomberg running for President > We already have too MANY candidates in the two main parties ( w/ more still entering !? ). Bloomberg seems to think he can run w/o primary party affiliation. The last person that did that was Ross Perot. He got away w/ it because he was a Billionaire ! Bloomberg isn't RICH enough to support a run. as always - Money rules all things !

Brian-

When I was admittedly scared right off-line by that thunderburst (there was NO time between lightning flash and thunderclap), I was about to comment that I enjoyed your interview with Mayor Mike. I have to chuckle over New Yorkers--particularly subway riding New Yorkers. They are so egalitarian their attitude is: everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time, so why disrupt your routine for anyone?! One wonders what kind of celebrity it would take to command their attention. They are a big part of why NYC is the greatest city in the world!

Anyway--good interview--but when the Mayor said the country's mess is neither the Democrat's nor the Republican's fault, but rather all of Washington's--I wish you had asked if he was thinking third party.

Today turns out not to be so good weatherwise--but I do hope you'll broadcast from up top soon.

Brian -

Innovative interview with Mayor Bloomberg went well. I have long believed that the Mayor - who is an astute businessman/politician would like to be President. I think it is the whole campaigning idea which gives him pause. However, as the Mayor of NYC (Current, not past) he could be excused from some of the campaign travel for business reasons.
When Joe Lieberman created his own party and was left without any support - including financial - from the Democrats, Mayor Bloomberg underwrote all expenses and staffing for the "Lieberman for Connecticut" party and thereby gained access to Senator Joe - a very smart political move.

What's wrong with Mike taking time to vacation and play golf at Mid Ocean in Bermuda when he has the time? He's got his own plane, is an accredited pilot himself, and can be back and forth in no time.

I've played at Mid Ocean, and can understand his weekend plans. :)

Brian,
Wasn't the last time Nightly News was broadcast on the roof 9/11/01? I think Tom Brokaw did NN on the roof showing the smoke billowing.

Mayor Bloomberg takes the subway instead of driving his SUV to save on pollution. But then he takes off on his private jet to get away. Doesn't the jet pollution defeat the purpose?

Brian-

Aw...too bad that ill-timed T-storm kept you from broadcasting from the Top of the Rock. Hope you'll try again tomorrow--supposed to be nice. That ill-timed T-storm just jumped me out of my chair with a "hello" lightning bolt. See ya--time to shut down.

Good Evening Again Mr.Williams, Judging by the fact you were inside I guessed it was bad weather. Also the mystery of the President's watch solved due to the great NBC team of investigators. Good job! At least now we know he didn't lose it. I enjoyed your interview with Mayor Bloomberg and the subway ride you had with him. It would have been hard for me not to notice the two of you standing there. When I have travelled to New York city it has always been nice. It seems he is doing a fine job and will probably continue to do so. Now regarding the report by Tom Aspell about the fighting in Gaza. Those two groups certainly won't quit until the bitter end. But it is horrible that innocent civilians have to suffer the consequences. Peace needs to come soon. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to all!

Hi Brian: Don't worry about broadcasting outdoors. Just have your crew grab a few of those Today Show umbrellas that they use in the morning and you all will be fine.

Mr. Reed,

You can read Mr. Cavaiani's entry here: http://dailynightly.msnbc.com/2007/06/medal_of_honor__4.html

Thank you for your interest, and for reading the blog.

It appears your blog is listing the living Medal of Honor recipients in alphabetical order since it started in with names beginning with "B" and you are now in "C". I was looking for an old friend's name and citation but it seems that you skipped him. His name is Staff Sergeant (R) Jon R. Cavaiani and his citation is at http://www.somf.org/moh/cavaiani_jon_SF.htm

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Planning anything outside can be difficult during the summer months because storms do pop-up. I do hope it isn't raining, but don't be suprised if you are inside. With regards to the President's watch I do hope the Albanians didn't take it. They were extremely excited and affectionate towards him. I have never seen that happen to him during his Presidency. But I'm sure he has others back at the White House. Anyway, looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams! And I hope it isn't raining anymore. Peace to all!
