London calling
We received first word from our London bureau that something was up -- and we now know much more about what was discovered and who they are looking for. I'm writing this about 4 minutes after getting off the air with a network special report -- an update on this scary situation in London. A car loaded with gasoline, compressed gas and roofing nails, a crowded nightclub and a cellphone detonator. What an awful combination. British citizens are being told to dial 999, their equivalent of 911, if they see anything suspicious. We are quite busy assembling our package of coverage for tonight and so this will be a short final post for the week.
While the London story (and its various outgrowths) will dominate tonight, we also have a great report from Jim Maceda, just back from an embed with the very same Stryker brigade that I once spent time with. The temperature where Jim was with these U.S. soldiers? 140 farenheit -- about the edge of human tolerance, especially considering the work they are doing.
If we have time tonight, we'll look at some of your emails, at immigration, and we'll of course end with our regular Friday "Making a Difference" segment.
I hope you can find time to read about today's Medal of Honor recipient, as we profile all 110 living recipients. Talk about making a difference.
I would ask only that you have a good weekend, and a safe one. Remember to take time out to watch Nightly News this weekend, and we'll see you from home base Monday night. If you're going to be on the road in the New York area between 6 and 7pm tonight, be extra vigilant: my son has a driving lesson scheduled. Please join us tonight for the Friday edition..

Just wanted to say I enjoyed Friday's Viewer e-mail segment and was interested to notice that Joan's post about your having to travel so much was included because I'd read it several days earlier and it got me to thinking.
I'll have to say I agree with your response in effect that going where the news is happening and covering it firsthand is best because I've seen some first-rate newscasts anchored from places outside New York. One of the best more recent ones that sticks in my mind was when you travelled to New Orleans and covered a firehouse that, due to being short of equipment and funds, was having all sorts of problems--and so many viewers were moved they sent donations. Kudos to a great job!

Brian -
Thank you for including my email on the broadcast on Friday. I was about to change the channel to the Yankee broadcast, but hesitated and was glad I did.
I also want to thank Amanda for saying nice things about me - I always read her posts, too.
Brian - We've all learned a lot about the news business, each other, and you from this blog. You give us an interesting perspective on what goes on behind the TV screen at the Nightly News, and we appreciate it. I also am impressed with the writing here and I give it an A - I think we all must have loved our English and History classes:)

Brian,
Last August you aired on your show a picture of about 200 Taliban fighters attending a funeral which was taken by a "Predator Aircraft" in May 2006. The military commander did not allow the "Predator" to fire on them. He did get repremended for not taking the shot.
What I would like to know is who was being buried?? I would think the military has the co-ordinates of that area and could dig-up and do a DNA on who was buried.
We have not heard from Oshama bin Laden in a long time.He was or has been in poor health which the news media have reported in the past.
Maybe you can have Lisa Myers investigate this or Jim M. at the Pentagon.
Thank you for your time.

Yesterday two car bombs were discovered in London, but did not explode, while at the same time five
American soldiers had been killed in Irag. The news outlets focused for hours on the London car bombs, but nothing on the American soldiers. These actions on the part of the majors news outlets is in some significant measure why we are still in Iraq.

Let's be real, Islamic extremists were behind this foiled attack. It is amazing to me that we haven't heard any prominent Muslim speak out against this or any other known Islamic extremist attack. What does this tell me? It tells me just how intolerant and barbaric Islam is.

Brian - Thanks for including some of my words on the broadcast on Friday. Enjoy the weekend - and stay away from that poison ivy - it put me on steroids once!

Brian, I have to ask you, how much fun was it to say "Veggie Booty" on air? I can't believe you kept a straight face!

Hi Brian it was nice that you acknowledged your bloggers. For me it's like telling you what I think and not having to hear you disagree.
It seems like alot more terrorist developing since the invasion of Iraq. It's really scary sometimes.
As for our troops I have to agree with the Dems the sooner we get our troops home the better. Now Gates might want to wait but that means hundreds more soldiers will die for nothing. General Pace is really a sad person with his weak explanation and excuses while on his way out.
As for your traveling well put the Willie Nelson song on your iPod or iPhone " On the road again ".
I was to scared to teach my kids how to drive they learned in high school. As for me I ran my Dad's car in a fire hydrant so it took a long time for me to drive.

Your correspondent reported that it was 140 degrees in Baquabah. Is that true (I seriously doubt it)

Good Evening Mr.Williams, First of all regarding the report by Mr.Maceda on being embedded with the 3rd Striker Brigade. I must say I cannot imagine enduring the 140 degree temperatures wearing all that clothing and gear. In the report the commander said they were having some success, but there are still many out there. I feel very sorry for the civilians who are caught within the fighting. I only hope that peace can come soon. And please stay safe Mr. Maceda and keep cool as possible too! Also I hope that the people responsible for the London terror plot are caught. It is frightening that they are still on th loose. Finally, it was great to see one the of Daily Nightly commentors get her statement on the air. I liked how you said we hear from some of you everyday. I felt part of that group very much. Thank you for sharing them! Have a great weekend Mr.Williams! Peace to all! ( And I always watch Lester Holt do Nightly News on the Weekends!)

Brian,
THANK YOU! The Making A Difference segment is always a treasure that at the end of a long work week helps restore my faith in humanity and our fellow citizens, which by Friday night has been sorely tested.
Camp Victory and what it accomplishes --- how amazing and wonderful.
If I may share, my father is not known for being a patient individual, rather the exact opposite, but he was the epitome of patience when it came to teaching me how to drive. He would take me out practice driving for hours. On one occasion I bounced his head off the windshield by going over railroad tracking without slowing down, I will never forget his reaction. "Next time you might want to slow down a little." To this day many many many years later, we still joke about it. I'm sure your son will do super well and make you proud.
Kudos also for mentioning Joan from CT, she is a great contributor
Have a great and safe weekend.

I'm sure your son will do well :) And good luck to him!
Have a great weekend, Brian! And as always, thank you for keeping us so well informed about these sudden events that rivet our attention. I just wonder when this age of Islamic nihilism will end.

"We must fight them there or we'll have to fight them here", What a crock. Bush's immoral war is making the entire world less safe. Cut funding now.
