The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

A LITTLE DAY MUSIC

As I write this, there is a troupe singing opera on 6th Avenue, a few stories beneath my office.  They have microphones and amplifiers, and sadly I'm not a big fan.  So, I just increased the volume of my iPod here in the office.  Problem solved.

To the news: a primary story on our broadcast tonight happened last evening when the man once known as "Richard Nixon's Favorite Mayor" -- Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar -- gave a speech (after much deliberation) breaking with the president over the war in Iraq.  While not quite an "if I've lost Cronkite ..." moment, it was a moment given Lugar's reputation. We'll talk about the speech and the fallout and the policy tonight.

China is in the news on a few fronts, and we're going to double-team that story tonight, between Pete Williams and Andrea Mitchell, who's been here in New York with us all day.  We'll revisit last night's lead story -- the Lake Tahoe fire -- and look at how it's developing into something of an environmental debate.  George Lewis remains on post.

The Cheney series in the Washington Post is getting a lot of attention, and one of several components in a generalized heightening of the scrutiny surrounding the Vice President.  We'll be doing our own reporting on that subject this week.

We have a story right out of our own back yards tonight: the scourge of what seems like a new and bionic strain of poison ivy this year.  As a victim myself, I raised my voice on this topic at the editorial meeting this afternoon.  Additionally, we're going to look at hedge funds tonight (as part of a new series of reports) and we'll even take a whack at explaining how they work.  We already know a lot of people are making a lot of money -- many of them with money in the first place.

How great is Chris Colvin's prairie dog video selection today?  I had already caught that little gem on the Web.  Yes, it has come to this.  I'm discussing an animal video, and said animal has signed a development deal.

So we're moving on a lot of fronts toward tonight's broadcast.  We hope you can join us for the Tuesday night edition of NBC Nightly News.

Mr. Williams,

This may be off-topic, but here goes anyway. I have been a loyal viewer of NBC Nightly News for years. I have seen reports lately regarding your ratings vis-a-vis the other major networks. When I turn on the news, I am really looking for coverage of the Number ONE story of our time, Iraq, and our men and women serving there. As I don't have cable, I flip between the big three networks looking for this coverage. Sadly, it seems sorely lacking on your newscast lately. I thought your coverage of Katrina and it's aftermath exemplary, and I admired your tenacity in continuing to cover it even after the other networks moved on. I would suggest you consider spending a little more time on this than you have lately. Thank you for your time.

Regarding yesterday's story about the NFL players appearance before Congress, it just breaks my heart that a Congress should listen to a bunch of multi-multi-millionaire has-been NFL stars whining that the NFL doesn't do enough to take care of them in their old age. With all the money these players have been paid over the years you would think that they could easily afford to pay for care of their own bashed in skulls and steroid pickled brains. Somebody really has their priorities set wrong on this one and if Congress can't think of anything better to do, I think I could come up with a good starter list of tasks that really need their attention.

Brian as I read over the CIA horror file I noticed something interesting. As Castro was to be assassinated and the US hired Cuban Mafia well I remember a tape someone shot at the Kennedy assassination. Rumor had it was gun shot smoke and two strange men. Well at lease the CIA destroyed the man's tape as he was ordered to give it to them. The US seem to be in the business of assassination. Will this be allowed in the American History books.
So much of history from other countries show leaders who kill innocent people by gas and experiments. Now the United States has joined that list of horrors. Well at lease those plans haven't been thrown away as they are used today in the new US policy. Now we can add torture and life in prison without charges to the list. The world has changed but the United States has gone backward, now the question is how far back with this Administration take us? President Cheney was trained well during the 60's and 70's as his mentors would be proud he finally got to put the plan in order. Setting up the Supreme Court, DOJ and all branches of government to follow as ordered. Now Karl Rove did his part by putting in play a one party system and hiring only loyal employees. Welcome to the New America.

It rained at my house Monday afternoon for the first time in a month ... for twenty-seven whole minutes ... enough for the water to run off the eaves (almost a quarter of an inch according to my rain gauge) ... we here on this end of the street celebrated, because we don't have to water our gardens for a day or two. Instead of dragging our hoses out yesterday evening, we celebrated instead by sharing some lemonade while rocking on my front porch. It was nice to share a conversation that didn't take place while yelling back and forth over our hoses at each other across the street. The sudden downpour didn't do much to reduce the over-twenty inches we're behind in rainfall for 2007, but it was a joy hearing the water tinkling off my rain chain once again ... it's really about the simple pleasures, after all.

Down here in the woods, there are poisoned ivy vines growing up the trunks of trees whose vines are as big around as a large man's arm. A rigorous spraying regime using RoundUp from Spring through Autumn usually kills most of the plant. However, if you really want to get rid of the poisoned ivy once and for all, just plant some Kudzu Vine (the "Vine that ate the South!") ... that'll choke the ivy out -- of course, then the Kudzu will take over you and your life (it grows between six and twelve inches per DAY), so maybe using RoundUp is a better idea.

So, Brian ... were you listening to your iPod during the running of the story on Paul Potts shown on the broadcast last week? Just Kidding :-). Even though I was a Vocal Major in college, I must admit that I don't really care for opera, myself. However, it is in my humble opinion that those who have a pure, unprofessionally-trained operatic voice, such as the one Mr. Potts possesses, is a gift from God ... no matter how hard one tries, and no matter how many vocal lessons one takes, one just can't train/force one's voice to sound as smooth as Mr. Pott's voice sounds!

Hey Brian,

Love your broadcast. I TiVo NBC Nightly News so that I can watch it when I come home from work. I really liked the story about hedge funds. I've always been curious about the topic, and believe that it would be a great topic for a longer piece on MSNBC or CNBC.

Cheers!

I believe the Democrats are not really trying to get the troops out of Iraq. All they do is talk about it and not really try.

A majority of the American and Iraqi people wants American troops out of Iraq. The Democrats are in control of both houses of Congress. They make a minor effort of passing a bill but backs down when Bush says he will veto any bill calling for a troop withdraw/reduction.

If Congress were to pass a bill today calling for all troops out of Iraq by Labor Day and Bush signs it what will the Democratic candidates for president talk about tomorrow? As long as there are troops in Iraq the Democrats can go around saying: Democrats supports the troops and wants them home - Democrats good. Republicans wants the troops to stay and die in Iraq - Republicans bad.

With the Republicans breaking with Bush this will take away a campaign talking point for the Democrats.

Maybe now the Democrats will finally do what the people elected them to do in 2006 - start bringing the troops home by passing the necessary bills and if Bush veto the bill send it back again and again.

Good Evening Again Mr.Williams, In Chip Reid's report from the Capital I found it interesting how the Republicans are breaking away from the President on the course in Iraq. There has not been many benefits to this surge of troops as of yet. I also didn't realize that Senator John Warner agreed with Senator Luger and met with the President in January. September seems like such a long way off to wait for a progress report when the situation could be discussed sooner. Regarding the report on hedgefunds and how much of a risk they can be to put your money. I think it is a little dangerous because if it doesn't payoff in large profits one could be out alot of money. One does have to be careful with ones money to make sure there is enough for the future. And finally, as I said before don't become victim to poison ivy. It would be difficult doing the broadcast if you had to deal with that itchy agony. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to all!

Good Evening Mr.Williams, First, I am sorry about the noise of the opera singing, but at least you have that iPod near you to solve the problem. After hearing some of what Republican Richard Lugar said about the war not going well. I can really agree with that statement. We are losing brave men and women of our military everyday and something has to be changed. May the strategy be changed soon so that peace can be the outcome. Also, I hope you don't become victim to any more poison ivy. Looking forward to the broadcast Mr.Williams! Peace to all!
