The Internet's role in Fort Dix plot
Six men described by federal prosecutors as "Islamic militants" were arrested on charges they plotted to attack the Fort Dix Army base and "kill as many soldiers as possible," authorities said Tuesday.
A former senior U.S. intelligence official tells NBC News do not lose sight of the role the Internet played in inspiring these prospective jihadis. The FBI affidavits note that among the materials used in organizing, training and proselytizing the jihadis were al-Qaida training videos, the video wills of two 9-11 hijackers, and videos of U.S. soldiers being killed in Iraq.
The leader of the group is described as smiling while watching the deaths of the U.S. soldiers.
"You know the world has changed when videos shot in Iraq and Afghanistan can be an inspiration for a bunch of Albanians in Cherry Hill, N.J.," said the official.
He noted that the Internet also helped in the recruitment and inspiration of jihadis who planned terrorist attacks in places like Singapore and England.
"The guys in Singapore, all middle class, were all recruited off the network of jihadi Web sites," he added.
What is missing and needed, he added is, a "countervailing message" from moderate Islamists.
"Where is the countervailing message from Islam on the Internet?," he asked. "They aren't going to believe anything we in the West have to say. It has to come from Islam."

I have no trust in Muslim's who have more of a problem with the term 'Islamic Militants' than with the militants themselves. Which pretty much seems to be all of them. Sad, but I'm now resigned to believing that there is a VERY small minority of Muslims that don't inwardly or outwardly support their 'obligation' to commit murder.

well as i have said in some chats
the only way to deal with the muslim here is to deport them burn the mosques (sic) and if yu want to end the muslim menace world wide yu have to do the unthinkable but people wont have that
in their text there are passages that the only good muslim goes and kills in the name of allah (sic)
the reason why we as americans have the problem now is that the politicians refuse to deal with the problem

In response to Stephan Hollinger, Philadelphia , Pa., Illegal’s have nothing to do with this. These terrorists are in this country legally. The terrorist from 911 were here on student visas and so was the Virginia Tech murderer.
If someone can be easily influenced by a website to harm to Americans then they will find alternate motivation to support terrorism. The web sites helps weed out these undesirables. As much as I hate to say it, the countervailing websites need to remain available. The web sites need to remain to be monitored so we can identify, track, and imprison or execute the terrorists and traders among us.

"Its not "moderate Islamists" responsibility to clean up behind criminals' work. Why do they continue to blame Islam when these people are clearly acting in response to US foreign policy?" That's the same kind of attitude that made it easy for the KKK to run rampant in the South for so many years. Hey they both hate Jews, and wear sheets over their faces mmmm small world.

I was an illegal immigrant for many years due to an obscure law passed to children born in post war Japan. I became naturalized when I turned 21 years of age, after living here for 17 years. In no way am I sympathic to radicals or their intentions to do harm in the name of religion or politics. But I do fear the loss of human compassion and understanding, when we allow our fears and prejudice to be fueled by a few disturbed individuals. I was in Russian when the terrorists were arrested in England this past summer. I was diverted to England on my flight back to the US, and then I was diverted to New Jersey instead of New York. After I left the Airplane I was separated from all of the other passengers and sent to an expansive area all by myself with Customs guards and others that I now assume were Homeland Security. I was searched 5 times and questioned 4 times. I was treated very badly, they made me undress and spread eagle agaist a plate of glass, and I was never given any explanation as to why. I felt very strongly that if I said anything it could be interpreted as being hostile, or uncooperative, I would have been handcuffed and taken somewhere else. My concern is where are we going with all of this? Are we going to allow a few disturbed, but very dangerous people change all of us into frightened, prejudicial, persecuters, and take away the freedoms and the compassions that we stand for? In case you are curious, I guess that I fit the physical profile. I was raised as a Buddhist but I studied Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity, and I have only found understanding, compassion, love, and truisms, in all of their beliefs.

What we have in this case is a combination of factors: 1.) Our foreign policy , past and present; 2.) Willless Americans, US government and leftist leaning/liberal/own agenda lawyers and judges who do not seem to see the end of our society (bad as it may be at times) if we do not act decisively; 3.) Radical 'Middle Easterners' using Jihad and Islam as an excuse for killing and destroying; 4.) 'moderate' Muslims and 'Middle Easterners' who do not step up to help counter the false dogma. And lastly, we have the unfortunate fact that Islam and Christianity have been at war since the 7th century CE

Until now we have never seen muslim communities in US or elswhere in world to protest against radical islam and terrorism...WHY???

We do not need any kind of Muslim's in this country. How many more people have to die from non US citizen's. This country in TOO nice, we need to take care of our own and everyone else needs to stay in their own country.

I'm sure the CIA IS recruiting American Muslims. There have been many thwarted terror attempts in America since 9/11. Let us hope that the next President takes terrorism as seriosly as President Bush.

The alleged plot by 6 extremists to storm Fort Dix and kill soldiers on the base is nearly as comical as the plot to kidnap George Bush, Laura, their two daughters, and Condi Rice and kill them too. I smell a set-up in order to remind us that Homeland Security merits its budget requests.

It doesn't matter how many coutervailing messages are posted on these websites, one believes what he or she is exposed to. So many addictive drug web sites are out there, am I to read some and become an addict? The answer is no, these militants or whatever you want to call them are being brain washed by extremists, and bottom line they have nothing to look forward to....I am a native muslim, american by choise, I love my religion, and I love this country and what it stands for....Islam has nothing to do with what these idiots are doing, Islam taught me to love not hate....Having some muslim CIA's infiltrate communities in the states isn't such a bad idea....

RK, to ack out in this manner by murder is not an acceptable responce in our society...unless you to think it is a way to defend your religious beliefs.

Mr. Windrem,
Your observations and comments are right on target. There continues to be unexplained, virtual silence from Muslim leaders throughout the world while those who claim their faith defile it with unspeakable evil that rivals that of the worst fascist movements the world has known.
These so-called leaders are apparently either sympathetic to and/or complicit in the evil being committed in the name of Islam and God or they lack the courage to rightfully challenge it. Obviously, neither position does anything to expose and defeat this evil that continues to promote fear, distrust, indignation, conflict and war throughout the world and serves only the Evil One himself.

Now may-be the few remaining supporters of the disaster in Iraq will see reality! But I doubt it. You can almost hear the PR machine whirring up to fever pitch - screaming that we need to stay the course in order to protect America from the Islamic terrorists. A day, 3,000 lives and many billions of dollars too late.
They are getting stronger by the minute as our military is stretched to the breaking point trying to resolve a civil war that has raged in the Middle East for thousands of years. Mr. Bush's decision to invade Iraq was a big fat gift to Bin Laden, and we are in more danger today then we have ever been. We need to redeploy our forces in preparation to fight terrorism any where in the world, because that's were it's coming from now. We need to secure our borders, and secure our food imports. We need to develop a military specifically geared to fighting the threat we are facing - at a moments notice, in multiple locations. The money being spent in Iraq needs to be spent on Homeland Security and Law Enforcement HERE. I live less then five miles from Fort Dix this was too close to home.

Kudos to the FBI for nabbing the fanatics before they caused harm to the innocent. I wonder why USA is not taking action on its illegal immigrants. They along with home grown jihadits can pull a real scoop.

I am disappointed with the media reporting errors stated as facts. Today it was reported that a group of young men allegedly had intentions of attacking Fort Dix. The men were reported as Albanians from the former Yugoslavia. The problem is that Albanians are not one group. There are several ethnic groups of Albanians considered as a whole. I would appreciate it be made clear that the fact that they are Macedonian Albanians does not reflect on all ethnic Albanian belief. They have always considered themselves apart from the rest of the ethic Albanian groups. Altogether, it was unnecessary to mention that they are Albanian. It is difficult enough to make the world understand that Albanians do not share the views of those whom mean harm. My brother, who was born and raised in New York, was actually confronted today regarding the fact that those men were referred to as Albanian. His friends called them “your people”. The only response my brother was able to give is “They’re not my people.” It feels like a deliberate action made by the media in order to give their terrorists a name. All I ask is to make it clear or not mention it at all.

This commentary is nothing more than spin. A foiled plot spun to lead us into believing that "The Internet" is the culprit. These are the same people that advocate gun control by blaming the guns rather than the psychos that misuse them.
With all of the domestic eavesdropping and technologies this government is using on the American people we have to believe that it was some clerk that saved the day. The door of the Internet swings both ways and the ease in which these Islamic nutcases used the the Net to plan their scheme, the ease in which the government should have used the Net to pick up on it. Bottom line: Don't fall asleep at the wheel then blame the car.

There is no countervailing modern islamic message because there is no moderate political or religious islamic leader who has the stature or charisma to have any effect on Muslim community. While it is certainly true that the Jihadis are horrible human beings,it cannot be denied that they are at least willing to die for their beliefs no matter how misguided they are. With the vast majority of Muslim communities being ruled by non-democratioc despotic leaders whose only interst is to protect the status quo why would Muslim youth who are living lives without hope listen to their message especially when the so called democratic countries like the USA PROP UP THESE REGIMES to assure a smooth flow of oil.If you want to stop jihadis ,stop focusing on how to prevent their appeal to Muslim youth and star focusing on making principle decisions relating to getting rid of the tyrants that we support. If we threw out the royal family in Saudi Arabia and let them vote even if meant Al QUAEDA being elected,we would be making a statement that life is worth living now and not in the hereafter.Take away th eveneer of th egiant satan and you have a lot less to fight about and give your life for.
The rise of ISLAMIC extremism was very predictable and the main reason for its success and spread has been our unprinicpaled support of those of th eautocrats in order to assure our supply of oil and let the will of the people be damned.Until we acknowledge our role in this we will be despised by th evast majority of those in the middle east

I like many millions of other Americans still think the men and women in charge of this country need to stop the BLAH BLAH BLAH of things and start fixing the issues.Millions and Billions are being spent every day and there still is no solutions. We have 10 MILLIONS in this country illegal and counting. It needs to stop now before the next big attack. My father served this country and was stationed at Fort Dix,and when talking to him about this he just says this country is going to HELL fast.I and others are sick of the same BS that politics keep feeding us.FIX THE PROBLEMS NOW SENATE,CONGRESS,PRESIDENT.Why are we called the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ,because we should be united but we are far from it. A very concered AMERICAN

Isn't funny how we, the people and news media are in such a rush to find out all the details of who , when and how that we give the terrorist the way not to plan another plot and not to use the things that helped foil the last one. They are not dumb! They learn and react very quickly and adapy accordingly. Why do we spill the beans about how we caught on. If you thing that they will use the same methods again who are you fooling. We report on how easy it is to cross the boarders, which shipping ports are easy targets and how to fool the security. Does America have to keep shooting theirselves in the foot all the time. Lets not help the enemy any more that we already have.

The "former senior U.S. intelligence official" is absolutely correct as quoted in the final two paragraphs. Peer pressure alone could stop even right-of-moderate Muslims from trying to understand both sides of the conflict. And unfortunately, as a result, many innocent Muslims the world over are being persecuted - and executed, in some cases - due to the rash actions and perpetuated ideology of a relatively small few. For Islam to truly "win" the war (and, of course, that's a relative term for any side involved in armed conflict), it has to begin with words and actions from respected members of the Muslim community. Success will only truly come from within, not through who lets the most blood spill on the ground of the enemy or their own.

Inspiration to do good or bad things does not come from external sources. It comes from the loves we have within us. The only thing that external inputs do is fuel the desires of loves.
And what are you implying to do? Eliminating the internet, guns and knives will not stop someone's love for violence. Here's another case where someone makes conclusions based on false assumptions - only to lead us down the road to pointless distractions from our true goal. Kind of like the so-called drug war.

If ever we needed the "J. Edgar Hoover" mentality now is the time. We must as Americans help our law enforcement agencies any way we can. And they must be willing to listen. Forget about "racial profiling" and remember that the enemy is among us and we appear helpless and reluctant to act. REMEMBER ILLEGALS ARE ILLEGAL
