Tonight's broadcast

I'll be anchoring the program tonight. At this writing we expect to lead off with correspondent Richard Engel's report from Iraq on a horrible attack in the Shiite holy city of Karbala that has left at least 60 people dead.  It is part of the steady drumbeat of sectarian violence that is fueling a rising impatience over the war in this country. Tonight, however, Richard gives us the view of some Iraqis who are living this daily nightmare. Do they think it's time for America to pull out?

Also tonight, it is arguably New Orleans' most infamous tourist attraction. The lower Ninth Ward -- the neighborhood where time stood still after Hurricane Katrina. The only signs of life on most days are the slow-moving cars as visitors tour the landscape of collapsed homes, rusting cars, and debris -- a scene that has changed very little since the flood waters receded in 2005. Today, former residents took to the streets in a collective call to the federal government for help, saying it's time to come home. Our Martin Savidge is there to explain their plight and what life has been like for those who used to call the neighborhood home.

Those stories and Kevin Corke's heartwarming piece about an 85-year-old World War II veteran in Maryland who just received a surprise package in the mail, straight from the European battlefield he fought on more than 60 years ago.

I hope you'll join us tonight.

Hmmm, I've read most of the transcripts of what bin Laden has said over the years and I don't recall any goal of killing "all" Americans. He has stated his goal of bankrupting us by pulling us into wars far from home, and Mr. Bush is a willing participant in this. He has stated a goal of getting US troops out of the holy land of Saudi Arabia. And like most Muslims he's no fan of Israel and claims to have been inspired to commit 9/11 while watching the Israelis bomb Beirut back in the 80s.

And even if he wanted to kill all of us, how is he going to accomplish this? Flying Iraqi crop dusters across the ocean? Maybe Mr. Bush believes this is possible, but then we all know how smart he is. I just don't see how the most powerful nation on earth is supposed to be frightened to death by a ragtag bunch of religious zealots operating out of caves. But then a frightened population is easy to manipulate into supporting needless wars, as Hermann Goring pointed out.

Congress should not send another penny to fund the occupation of Iraq, we've poured enough money down that rathole. The money requested should be used instead to rebuild the Gulf Coast. It's high time for a federal agency (a new WPA?) to hire the jobless and put them to work rebuilding all the homes and neighborhoods that have been destroyed.

On the other hand, maybe if Halliburton could get a huge no-bid government contract to rebuild the Gulf region, the President would support it.

Those who SUPPORT the efforts of our troops are FAR MORE NUMEROUS than the media would have us believe.

We recognize NETWORK AGENDAS. These highly paid journalists appear to rely on a false invincibility. They seem to believe that since their money will protect their lifestyles, there is no need for military action to protect the country which provided the opportunity for those lifestyles. Their SHORTSIGHTED, egotistical tactics reveal that they have no concept of the danger which faces them.....and the rest of us.

The media's intentions are to DIVIDE this nation at a time when it's IMPERATIVE to present a UNITED front to a formidable, relentless enemy. To do otherwise is to decrease our strength in the eyes of that enemy...an enemy which monitors every word coming from the American press. When that enemy perceives weakness, they are emboldened to fight harder, making the job of our soldiers even more difficult.

Journalists are allowing their war with the president to obscure their vision of the real war...the war with the enemy which has clearly stated its intentions...to destroy all Americans....journalists included. JOURNALISTS display an IMMATURE SELF-ABSORPTION when they attempt to grind their personal axes at the expense of their fellow Americans.

You know I can't help but say this but we SHOULD NOT be rebuilding New Orleans. ...at least without taking far more precautions than they are. It's amazing to learn that they've only chosen to raise houses THREE FEET, when they know full well the water was 12 feet high. How DUMB can we be as if this won't happen again? Sea level rise give New Orleans only a 50 - 60 year future anyway. Sea levels WILL BE rising 10 to 20 feet in the next 150 years. There IS no stopping it even if we ended carbon emissions today. Sure... Absolutely we need to take better care of those who were effected but we do that by rebuilding their city on higher ground and further inland. It only be redoing it THE SAME WAY is a story all its own. Here we thought the terrorists were bad. Heck, we'll likely die off from our own stupidity long before they've had a chance to blow us up or something. The same thing can be said of Miami and LA which in now years over due for it's next big one.

Great to see you in the anchor chair, Mr. Holt. You are a talented anchor and I am glad to see you more often.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, I was happy to see Richard Engel this evening on the broadcast. I have missed him on the recent Nightly News broadcasts. His report on the bombing in Karbala shows that this constant violence never ceases for these people. I feel sorry for all the innocent civilians who have to endure this day after day. It is terrible that women and children were hurt or killed in the bombing. When Richard spoke that the people in this region don't see progress towards peace it is easy to believe. I surely hope that peace befalls this region soon because patience on all fronts is running thin. Our troops have been through so much and are so dedicated, but it is hard to see them there much longer. These people need leadership to quell this violence because sooner or later they have to stand on their own. I only hope it happens soon. Please stay safe Richard! Peace to you always! Peace to all!

Hello Dear Lester,
The program was excellent and had many issues. There is no doubt that Richard is the best reporter available on Iraq. I always wish him safe trips and stay in Iraq. He has not been a crony to the vested interests and powerful groups claiming that Iraq under the US occupation is a better country than ever. In fact, the current occupation of Iraq, led by President Bush, is the sorriest looking country on earth. It has been the worst country in modern history, a condition that has made the entire world thinks that the Bush administration has been the worst political institution managing the greatest power on earth. It is unfortunate that the Bush administration has no nerve to see and realize the complete destruction of the country and its people. Please think about the event that even President Bush (1) started crying about the misery that our country and Iraq have been suffering from. Where I come from when my father cries about my condition, the interpretation is very simple: It means really very bad. Still, our President does not get it. The House and the Senate have asked him to pull out the troops, and he will respond in negative. The Iraqis from Karbala told Richard to tell Bush to leave Iraq, because they think the occupation has brought these terrorist attacks. I am sure even if the mighty God whispers in his ears about pulling the troops from Iraq, our President will not listen. Iraq was a dictatorship under Saddam but not a failed state. Now, Iraq is blood bath and failed state. The reason is the imperialist occupation of the country. What I would like to conclude is that: If we stay 100 years in Iraq, the situation will be worsening and the killing will rise. Will we get the oil? No. Will Iraq be democratic? No. Why? Because the Iraqis will not live under occupation, nor will they submit to the might of foreign occupation. If we leave Iraq, the Iraqi people will do many new things that will help the world community. They will have their best country. Why? Because they will be truly liberated. Finally, I do not feel sorry about Mr. George Tenet, because cronies are usually trapped. The Master hires cronies to deliver their ideas, and when wrong things occur, the Master blames the cronies. Mr. Tenet should have defended the CIA’s position that Iraq did not have WMD and Bomb. But he submitted to the Master. He deserves it, and the Iraq war will erode his heart. He looks like a fool. It is good for him though to let things go, because that may help him. Best Regards
