The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

The day after

Charlie, Katie and I just interviewed President and Mrs. Bush -- we were given five minutes apiece before the President's motorcade departed. Because we were all asking for time with him during his visit, this sort of arrangement (hammered out in the early hours of the morning between the White House and the television networks) is quite common in situations like this one. The service on campus was an emotional gathering and the first of many, I'm afraid. For those who watched, the consensus seemed to be that the emotional high point came at the end: there was something about hearing the school cheer (led by a beloved figure on this campus, the poet Nikki Giovanni) that put people over the edge. It was a moment of old-fashioned school spirit... of great strength and brief joy in the power of the collective: but at the end of the day, and quite literally when the cheering is over, I'm afraid many of these students are going to need all the kindness that the surrounding community can offer, and then some. They have come here to enjoy the best years of their lives, and will leave here having seen the very worst of human behavior and depravity. That those of us with children in college continue to see this story through that prism is understandable -- and I'm quite sure somehow colors the way we see the anguish on these kids' faces.

I'm writing this in the back of a satellite transmission truck, and we're all clustered around the headquarters building for media and administration here on campus. We're doing an hour-long version tonight which will air across much of the country depending on your local NBC station -- and we're also doing an hour-long special tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. We'll stay on this and try to cover all the questions and issues this tragedy has raised.

We hope you will join us tonight.

It is really sad that the real reason for crimes like this are rarely ever mentioned. Without a life changing born again experience with Jesus Christ, men's [ mankind ] hearts are decietful and black with sin.
This country promotes crime and sex to the limit.TV and movies are crammed with violence. Small children are exposed to this daily. This does not make responsible people as they are growing up.
News broadcast's exploit every tragic event, keeps the ratings up. Killers get their pictures all over the tube. Somewhere another troubled kid or person is set aflame by the attention recieved by this killer, and you help promote this. Shame on you and the network.Blood money, that is your weeks pay this week, enjoy.
By the way taking God out of our everyday lives has not helped our schools or our society. He will let us run our course without Him if we so choose, but beware the end result. Teach our young murder and mayhem but never teach them about God, yet expect them to grow into loving, caring citizens, I think not.
Truly we do REAP WHAT WE SOW!

From all the information I have read or heard over the last few days, it seems that there were definite clues, behavior problems and all out warning signs that this lonely, immigrant, killing young man had personal troubles far too great to ignore. What is it about our social systems, Brian? Do we think that it is easier as Americans, or as a group of citizens, to believe that "somebody else will handle it, it's not my problem, etc." If we can somehow take some ownership for us all and our behaviors, in all of our everyday settings, whether it be at school, at work, in the shopping mall, at church, in the airport, etc. If you see something strange, out of character, or whatever, DO SOMETHING, like reporting it to the proper authorities, who MUST take responsibility to review it and must be held accountable. We are not doing that at all, it appears. It is easier to ignore and that has got to stop. We need reality-based disaster programs in place EVERYWHERE.

First of all my heart is broken over the 32 innocent lives that were taken!! And each person affected by this evil act is in thoughts and prayers!! I pray for the VT students, teachers and families that God will give them the strength they need to make it through this horrible tragedy!!!

As for Bush going there to offer condolences quicker than he did Katrina victoms .... this is like comparing apples to oranges!! The victims were not only in LA, but also in AL and MS!! (People tend to forget that!!) Also. the people in all three of those states were given weeks of warning about the hurricane!!! They could have left, but chose not to for what ever reason!!! The victims at VT were not given ANY kind of warning!!! There may have been warning signs ... but no concrete evidence that he would do something as horrible as what he did!!
Furthermore, in LA they had crews working trying to get to the survivers and resque them!! The last thing needed would have been the President with all of his security team in the way!!!

Back to the families of VT victims, I pray that one day you are all able to find your smiles and remember your loved ones with smiles and laughter!! Although there is no words that will comfort you at this moment, I do pray for you ALL!! I pray that God will wrap you in His loving arms and hold you close to him!! Alone, we cannot do anything... but with him by our side, there is nothing we cant do!!

May God Bless and keep you all, forever!!!

No wonder our country is in a mess...instead of being a UNITED States of America, we all have our negative opinions about everything from our President (who deserves our respect if nothing else)to who dontated sperm to Anna Nicole Smith to make a baby. It is so sad that when there is a tragedy (and I hate the word Massacre) we jump on our soap boxes instead of offering our prayers, love and support to those involved. It must be our narcissistic nature...shame on us....

First of all - my prayers and thoughts are with the Hokie Family. I was moved to tears yesterday when the Hokie cheer rang out from that convocation.

Next, can we please take a break on the monday morning quarterbacking, they will surely learn lessons from this, but none of this will bring back any one of those souls who lost their lives on monday. The bottom line is, there can be no real defense against a person who is willing to die in order to kill others, not in blacksburg, not in iraq, not in israel.

Last, the debate about gun control...it is troubling how easy it is to obtain a gun in this country - it is easier than getting a drivers license, registering your car, etc. I hat to say this, but where is beauracracy when you need it, perhaps a more extensive background check, not the "instant" background check that was done, but a real one, similar to what happens when getting a security clearance for a government job, where they talk to friends, neighbors, parents, etc. should be done for persons looking to acquire guns. Surely something like that would've kept the gun out of this kids hand. But then again, he could've gotten instructions on how to make a bomb from the web and carried out similar carnage that way.

The problem we have in our country is that we do everything we can to protect the rights of murderers, thieves and those who are without a doubt guilty of these heinous crimes during and after they are committed. When are we going to accept the fact that our judicial system is so screwed up with protecting the rights of these people that our law enforcement officers can not even draw their guns without first seeking approval from their supervisor and or his or her boss for fear of dismissal. Let our officers do their job. Look at what rights we afforded John Couey for his obvious guilt in the murder of one of children. All these defense attorneys have to do is buy a coloring book and some crayons to portray their clients as "not guilty by reason of insanity". We know they are insane or they would not be there. Our court system is so out of wack it is pathetic. Our defense attorney's are allowed to make a motion to dismiss the case because someone mispelled his or her name in the arrest report. Wake up America.

so sad to hear......Wondering.........How the university allow this type of..........student....?

I'm so tired of crying. We have soldiers dying everyday and now college kids. We the American people have to start taking care of America. So much attention and concern is given to Iraq/Afghan and who we will invade next. Scandals and lies from the US leaders while this country is falling apart. All have called for God's help while others use God's name to continue crimes, corruption and stealing. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Guns are just freely available here in the US. The world is watching the United States be taken down by the enemy within. How can we dictate to the world when our country is falling apart. All those answers now but it's to late. I read the backgrounds of each victim and it's heartbreaking as all were of so much value and life. We are allowing our future to be killed not by our side enemies but within our own country. A President feeling sorry isn't what this country needs right now Brian we need a leader who can bring back respect and morals to the United States. We see death in Iraq and move on, now we see that right here in the United States. We have to stop complaining and do something to stop the maddness in this country and let the world take care of themselves. Yes help but not take control while America destroys itself.

My heart and prayers go out to all the victims and families of this tragedy.
There is however NO excuse anyone can give why the school was not locked down within minutes of the 1st shooting and all staff and students warned that a shooter was loose on campus. Sound alarms, get on PA sys,e-mails,text msg, etc. All of these warnings should of been done asap. By waiting, they allowed this shooter to have more time to plan his deadly attack. With a large police presence on campus and the school shut down, perhaps he would would of had second thoughts about trying to carry out his deadly rampage. But we will never know, because the school failed to act. We sound sirens for bad weather and dont second guess, but for a gunman on the loose we wait for the second round. Something is not right and VT needs to be held accountable to these victims families.

In reading the comments left on your message board it would appear that there are people responding and placing blame on our President and VA Tech personnel that could relate to and possibly explain themselves what drove this young man to this end. This has nothing to do with the Iraq War or anything political and attacking our President or anyone else at this time is just helping to keep this young mans own anger alive. The only thing these victims familys need from us at this time is our prayers and support not an opportunity taken to express your own anger or politcal frustration. Let it go and take this opportunity to "Thank God" that your family is safe and pray for those who are suffering and having to deal with the loss of their own loved ones. I pray that we never fully understand or experience what they are having to deal with today.

Though I may be an ancient 40 year old lawyer, when I attended UT, we were not supposed to have guns on campus either. Guess what? My .38 special was always on me. And if I were to be so unfortunate as to have to attend what passes for college these days I still would.

Brian,
I have two comments about last night's broadcast. I guess the first one is more about NBC's coverage in general. While the word "massacre" is accurate, I wish you would come up with something else for your overall title of your coverage. The local NBC station is using "tragedy" which I feel is more fitting.

Secondly, your comment last night to the students about 6 degrees of separation being more accurately 2 or 3. Brian, this is true not only of the students at VA Tech, but the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. You have but to look at the local television and radio websites around VA and see the number of prayer vigils and services being held to know this has hit each and every one of us.

If you were to have the opportunity to drive one of the interstates today or in the days to come I think you'd be hit in the heart when you see all the vehicles now adorned with Tech flags that are usually attached during game weekends.

I hope the students and families in Blacksburg know that all of Virginia is keeping them close to their hearts.

The people of the United States will solve our violence problem when we recognize that violence we perform on others will come back to haunt us. We feel we must be armed because the people we have harmed are plotting revenge. That may start with former slaves. It may be brown and black and yellow and red people across the world. We must understand that all people count. Then we can lay down our arms and live the life we all want. People loving their family, their selves, and their neighbors.

why didn't the school call his parents?? they could have kicked him out because of his behavior. they dropped the ball bigtime.

I am so saddened to see what happened on the Virginia Tech campus. 32 brilliant minds snuffed out like a candle. 32 minds that could have made a difference. Unfortunately, the gun control lobby is using this incident to beat the gun drum loudly. I beg to differ. Had just one or two people been present that were certified with a concealed carry permit, Mr. Cho just might not have killed as many people. He might not have killed anyone at all. When we ban the right to bear arms, only people like Mr. Cho will be able to get them. Americans have the right to defend themselves, and when we make it difficult for the law abiding citizen to obtain a firearm, they will stop trying. Unfortunately, criminals and people in Cho's state of mind will not. God bless these bright souls lost. Let us not act hastily in our grief, however.

First of all i would like to give my condolence to all the victims,and family members. My heart goes out to u all & God be with and Bless you all. We as society and around the world , should alwys love,respect,enjoy and be happy with one another. In this day and age you never know whats going to happen. I would just like to take this time now & say I Love You All Out There In This World & God Bles You All ! Always think positive,have faith not only with God but with yourselves to,and no matter what the circumstanses may be,Never Ever Give Up In Life! Just keep going strong & forward. P.S. (Always Give Your Anger A Voice) It can make a difference! Yours Truley A Friend For Life! {CHANO}

Think About This One!!!

A car company can move its factories to Mexico and claim it's a free market.
A toy company can out source to a Chinese subcontractor and claim it's a free market.
A shoe company can produce its shoes in Southeast Asia and claim it's a free market.
A major bank can incorporate in Bermuda to avoid taxes and claim it's a free market.

We can buy HP printers made in Mexico. We can buy shirts made in Bangladesh. We can purchase almost anything we want from 20 different countries.

BUT, heaven help the senior citizens who dare to buy their prescription drugs from a Canadian or Mexican pharmacy. That's considered un-American and illegal and our politicians want to stop it!

And you think the pharmaceutical companies don't have a powerful lobby? Think again!

Forward this to every person you know over age 50. Maybe this is an issue that should come up in the next election?

Forget the 50, send it to everyone. We're all in this boat together!
Even if you aren't in this boat now, you're standing on the pier.

after only a short time the left was attacking the
events at VT.
Is it not possible to let these issues rest for the time being and focus on all the hurt these people at VT are being subjected too. They have lost 32 people to a sentless act by a violent person. Pray for VT students, parents, and faculty.

I second what Jack, Scottsdale AZ said. I did notice how Bush rushed to Blacksburg to console the survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre when he didn't rush to New Orleans and Mississippi to console Katrina survivors there. And I'll add that the first question that came into my mind when I saw Bush being interviewed last night was why, after you mentioned 9/11 and Iraq deaths, you'd forgotten to mention those from Katrina?

I FEEL HORRIBLE FOR THE FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THESE VICTIMS. THAT IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE CONCENTRATING ON RIGHT NOW. WE NEED TO HELP PEOPLE HEAL AND SHOW THEM THAT THE NATION IS ON THEIR SIDE. THE MOST WE CAN DO IS SHOW OUR SUPPORT FOR EVERYONE AT V-TECH. I KNOW THE VICTIMS WILL BE MISSED.

You know, everybody is confused, angry and questioning how this could happen. We will demand change, but half of the population will be unwilling to change. For real change to occur, the gun culture in our society will have to change, and you will see people will be unwilling to allow that.
Are gun owners and gun lobbyists willing to compromise anything at all, to at least lessen the chance of this tragedy reoccuring? You will see that they are not willing. You will see the true selfish and ignorant nature of our culture. You will see them clinging to the Second Amendment like it is the very sustenance of their lives(see Sen. John McCain's comments), which of course it is not. And, of course, you will hear the old cliches: we just need to keep guns away from bad people, people kill people, and even calls for everyone to carry guns so they can better protect themselves. We will hear all of this nonsense, but this time I will not listen, and I hope and pray you will not listen either.

Gun Control is not an issue,al the laws were complied with, let's change the laws that kept the Professors and Staff from referring this young man to counseling and having him evaluated for mental problems. If he couldn't have gotten the guns legally he wouls have found another way to do what he done,as should be apparent with the bomb threats he "supposedly" had made.

My heart goes out to the families of these victums. May you find peace in knowing that your loved ones will never be forgotten.

Mr. Williams,
I heard an interview with a couple of Cho Seung-Hui's former roommates last night and a significant comment was made, but not followed up on. Both young men commented that Cho Seung-Hui never went home, even for holidays. This is important information and needs to be explored. What was the situation at home? Was he afraid to go home or not welcome or what? As a Marriage and Family Therapist I look at the context, community and family in which someone is currently operating as part of my understanding of the dynamics of his or her behavior. The fact that he never went home is a significant clue that needs to be explored. Thank you for the excellent and tactful job of reporting you and your staff have done.
