The day after
Charlie, Katie and I just interviewed President and Mrs. Bush -- we were given five minutes apiece before the President's motorcade departed. Because we were all asking for time with him during his visit, this sort of arrangement (hammered out in the early hours of the morning between the White House and the television networks) is quite common in situations like this one. The service on campus was an emotional gathering and the first of many, I'm afraid. For those who watched, the consensus seemed to be that the emotional high point came at the end: there was something about hearing the school cheer (led by a beloved figure on this campus, the poet Nikki Giovanni) that put people over the edge. It was a moment of old-fashioned school spirit... of great strength and brief joy in the power of the collective: but at the end of the day, and quite literally when the cheering is over, I'm afraid many of these students are going to need all the kindness that the surrounding community can offer, and then some. They have come here to enjoy the best years of their lives, and will leave here having seen the very worst of human behavior and depravity. That those of us with children in college continue to see this story through that prism is understandable -- and I'm quite sure somehow colors the way we see the anguish on these kids' faces.
I'm writing this in the back of a satellite transmission truck, and we're all clustered around the headquarters building for media and administration here on campus. We're doing an hour-long version tonight which will air across much of the country depending on your local NBC station -- and we're also doing an hour-long special tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. We'll stay on this and try to cover all the questions and issues this tragedy has raised.
We hope you will join us tonight.

Re: the msnbc video report that states "investigators have no idea what [Ishmael] means".
That sums up how deep these so-called investigators can dig. Barely far enough to uncover a worm or two, let alone the core of this.
Here, I'll toss you poor guys a freebie bone for nothing:

The angel also said to her:
You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.
He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.

PS The anchorman bragging about the 'exclusive' that NBC news had bagged with the Cho Seung-hui 'manifesto' video that will get so-and-so remembered for years to come, was one of the most repellent things I've seen on a network. Get a plaque for the fellah too, so he can always bring those happy memories flooding back with a quick glance over at his fireplace.

I would like to express my disappointment by your broadcast of the tapes and photos sent by Cho Seung-Hui to NBC. Cho Seung-Hui was nothing more than a psychopath who wanted his moment in infamy for his hideous crimes against the innocent. Your broadcast gave him just what he wanted, and fueled the fire for future sick minded extremist who may also want their moment in history. You would have done much better telling the story of the innocent young lives that was lost by this senseless act, and the story of the impacted lives of their loved ones.

Mr. Williams, Please stop showing those pictures of the gunman at VT. It becomes unbearable to see and must be very hurtful to the survivors and families. One showing was more than enough. It then became gratuitous.

First and Foremost, I would like to give ALL thanks to our Heavenly Father for making it possible, His only begotten Son for Dying and Rising on the 3rd day for our Sins, *THANK YOU JESUS* and the Holy Spirit for Comforting Us.*(Jeremiah 1:4-8 and Deuteronomy 1:4-8 is what I'm into now.)* Secondly, I feel that it's time to share some valuable facts regarding how a man should treat his woman and how a woman should know a real man. I would also like to make *note* to all the ladies that read my page, if your looking for *Mr. Pokey Mon* Keep moving please or continue reading so that you can attract, have and maintain/keep your true desires. In other words don't look for something without carefully knowing what you are looking for. *Don't Be Fooled or Played Any More* by your own feelings directing you to go for a physical attraction. We all know that it's costly and can be DEADLY. In other words if you can't be real with yourself how do you expect to attract King, Prince, Mandingo, or what every your looking for, to be real with you. Never tell yourself that it's hard to find what you're looking for, because the moment you express a negative notation it will produce what is sent, for instance if you believe what you are telling yourself and if it doesn't have any understand or knowledge to ones self or clarifying it with your inner-man you WILL continue to go around in circles, Better known as the Dreadful endless moments. Find the Fact's of what it is your in (NEED) of, before you even began in seeking something that could destroy your God given Life, be honest with yourself and ask yourself some positive and honest questions. I would like to suggest knowing the WORD of GOD it will be your guide for your destination. Is this something I really need or do I just want what ever it takes to satisfy my urgent wants. It's almost to say that we (want) things all the time, therefore we don't have any time left to get what we need. Never complain to any one that someone has done some thing wrong when you HAVE all the powers to prevent the matter and/or situation in your life. I want be the one that tell you to keep doing what you're doing unless it's a sound and proven fact that it will carry you to the next level. I will always be the one who Prey's for you and your success in life. If needed, I will help direct and guide you to the places that are needed. It would be a mistake on my part to give you what you want. That isn't an important function of a Real Men. He don't like making mistakes it can be costly and if they aren't careful and caution they could fall into a pit of ungodliness, carelessness, rude, bitter, silly fide, spiritual unclean, arrogant, and last but not less totally disrespectful to themselves, and we all know when one disrespect himself it's no problem in disrespecting others. Note those are not any aspects of a Real Man. Know the truth and facts of those type's of people and assure yourself that, it isn't the character of a Real Man. Ladies keep it in your memory box. It's called the Box of the Do's and Don'ts, remember and stay in touch with inner self *(please)*. In other words be able to discern the deferent's of what people, things or situations are. It's a plus; knowing the Essence of things. *Seek and Ye shall Find* *Knock and It shall Be Open* *Ask and It shall Be Given*, never give up when it's a fact that you are suppose to have the BEST, you are the Head and not the tail; you are BLESSED coming in and BLESSED going out. For the most part you have to know where, and when to look for a Real Man, and I'm quite sure you already know, why you're looking. If not I wouldn't recommend in casting your Pearls in front of swine. It's like saying you will reap what you sow, sow your seed on common ground, meaning know what you really need. I'll be the first to state that I'm not perfect in every area of my life, but I will gladly be the first to say Respect goes a long way. In saying that, respect comes to those whom seek it. It's like Wisdom it only cometh to those whom seek (HER). If a person can't learn; how then can you teach them? And for the person that knows it all then they should be doing what the can to help someone else obtain knowledge. Never be fooled by someone claiming to know everything. Rather feel assure and give credit to those that strive to make a different in this world. All I'm saying is, we can do what we can do, but we should continue PRAYING to do more. Never feel that we will defeat the, principalities, wicked and powers of evil in the higher realms, because it clearly say in the WORD that Jesus will do that. For the most part if at any time we feel a since of wanting a sexual desire. We should find the one that we want to be with, all the time. Look don't play and you want get played. We all know the WORLD isn't square, it's round and what goes around will come around PERIOD. There's no need to place any mental blocks of confusion in your head. If you don't play you want be played or fooled into playing a losing Game. Ask yourself if you really want to be Hurt, or Destroyed. The word clearly note that His people Die for the lack of knowledge. It states a lot more, but I would like to add a couple more. "For those who have an Ear let him hear." "It's Good for *Man* to find a *Woman*." I added my own words to the last saying. Don't commend yourselves for not having what you want, just repent and keep moving. Ladies I would like for you all to take this moment in understanding some Royal Aspects of Attracting, Looking and Keeping your soul mate. Note, don't be the old you and get mad over every little thing or I have known some that wanted to be in control. Too many wants, and no desires. Remember what is stated above, in other words "use your time wisely" I'm not trying to disrespect any of you in anyway, regarding your wants and needs. All I'm saying is a Real Man and The Other Men are different. The others will play all the time until there's no time left. And a Real Man will continue to do what is Best, Right, Just, and Loving for the over all purpose. Below I would like to describe some aspects of a Real Man, the one you really need. He can and will be able to satisfy your Dreams and Desires. One more thing to remember, you're never get what you need unless you stop shopping for what you *want*. Why have a heart full of things that take up valuable space. In other words wouldn't it be nice to have the ALL in one of what you need. Hmmm, that's something to think about. I don't want to get deep, I rather keep it on an common level. Remember keeping it real is what I do.
A REAL MAN:
There's no need for him to prove himself, "it" will show. They know their selves and don't waste any time making excuses. They know how to treat their Woman. They are full of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Real Men are not known only for their outward beauty but for the responsibilities they accept. They're not into bragging on their sexual powers, for there's no need/reason too. They are confident, powerful and full of *inner-gee* energy. A Real Man will know how to give love, accept love as well as allowing others to love them. Last but not the less, A Real Man Will Do His All to Stay In The *Word* and Do The Will Of GOD!!!

I have heard much of the news coverage about this tragedy and how some parties alerted the authorities to their concerns before the young man committed these atrocities. Many people want to know why those authorities didn't do anything about him before he acted out. I wish to point out that mental health professionals in this country are often limited to what actions they can take, without the individual's consent, even when it seems clear that there is imminent danger. In many cases, unless there is some clear and specific threat, nothing can be done - you cannot commit or even hold someone. As a mental health professional myself, I can understand and sympathize with the frustration of those who thought something terrible was coming and were unable to do more than they did. Please...let us care for those who need us now, and leave responsibility with the one to whom it truly belongs...the shooter.

By showing any video at all of the murderer (I refuse to use his name) at Virgina Tech, you are granting his wish and insulting the victims and their families.
How would you like it if you had a loved one among the innocent victims?
(Sent Apr 18, 2007 7:02:55 PM)
The Washington Post just reported that Cho Seung Hui was obsessed with a violent video game called Counterstrike. The mass murderer Robert Steinhauser, was a 19 year old who killed 16 and wounded 10. He too was obsessed with Counterstrike.
It's long overdue in the US that Congress legislate out of existence these violent video games who literally train non-shooters how to kill.
It's not Gun Control - It's Violent Video Game Control.
LtCol David Grossman, an international expert in violent video games had this to say about Counterstrike:
Counterstrike is an interesting game. Let me tell you some of the specifics about Counterstrike, that makes it particularly interesting: Number one, in this game, you break up into two groups. You can play the counterterrorist team, which are hunting down the terrorists, or you can play the terrorist. They break up into teams, and they actively engage in it, and those who are playing the terrorists, kill the innocents, and get points for it, you see. And so, in this game, it is not a game in which the good guys win, and you play the good guys, it's a game in which you play the bad guys. And you get points for killing innocents as the bad guys.
Furthermore, Counterstrike is a game which has a complex set of rules that rewards head shots. If you shoot at the enemy, and you hit them in the torso, you might get 15, 20, 30% probability of a kill, but if you shoot at the head, you get a 90% probability of a kill. And so, while you are shooting, you are trained in the game to do double taps to the head, poom-poom, poom-poom, two, three, four, five shots to the head, which is what's happened in the actual phenomenon: be trained to perform a certain way. Shoot the enemy in the head with multiple hits, and that is exactly what happened. It's a very realistic game, in which heads explode, and bodies fall, and people twitch and they die.

I think the sadest thing about reading these posts is how many of them are about one persons political beliefs and are NOT about the 32 beautiful, smart, funny, talented and brave victims.
This is not the forum for anyone to push their own political agenda and the blame game brings no one back. While I would love to respond to the ignorant people that have posted vile statements about the police, ignorant comments about the college, political comments about the President and insulting arguements (from BOTH sides)about gun control...this IS NOT the forum for that.
Take the time to mourn the dead and heal the wounded...give this community a chance to heal...let them gather together...alone...without the interference and let them begin to deal with this and remember those fine people they called family and friends.

I am more a spiritual man than a religious one. But I recall the old proverb, "Those who live by the sword, will die by the sword." Obviously, so will their children. I am so saddened and ashamed of what we have allowed to happen to the proud Nation I grew up in. I hope that my fellow Americans will stand with me and renew their determination to work tirelessly until we can be proud again, because before we set out to heal the World, we must heal ourselves and turn away from violence, sanctioned or otherwise. My sincerest regrets to all the families of those who died, including the family of Cho Seung-Hui, who clearly did not receive the help and attention he needed to avert this horrific event.
Howard Vicini, San Francisco CA (Sent Apr 18, 2007 4:52:09 PM)
It is very sad to hear that these people lost there life and I commend everyone that is working on not letting this happen again.
There has been many people that are coming down on the school and the law enforcement. There are a few words to be said of that. First: Why was the school not shut down? If my ears are hearing me correctly VT is the size of a small town. Do we shut down a small town when there are two people killed? NO. Second: Why did we not see the signs and stop this person before this happened? (Why do we not all become robots and have our next moves told to us.) There is plenty of help in this country for people that ask for it. If people don't want the help and then are held against there will there will be a bigger fire storm.
There is no reason to point fingers and push blame on anyone. The person has made us all open our eyes and see what can be done to not let this happen again. That is where the focus needs to be AFTER the mourning is over. (That will be never and that is understood.)
Here is my question to everyone. If this person had just killed the first two students and not killed any more would we have ever heard of this?
We need more of the reporting of the good things that happen rather than who is to blame or who do I sue today. I hope that there are no lawsuits from this, just lessons learned. There is no predicting human nature just mother nature. Look at 9/11.
Chris Hilliard, St. Petersburg, FL (Sent Apr 18, 2007 4:48:02 PM)
This is NOT about gun control. This is NOT about the fact he was Korean. It is about a psycho who demonstrated school shooter tendencies and was ignored. I feel the school should have alerted EVERYONE after the first shooting. Who knows how many would have survived had they done so?
(Sent Apr 18, 2007 4:40:57 PM)
Gun advocates believe that everyone should have the right to bear arms, but the Constitution states all Americans have the right to "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The Second Amendment is just that, an amendment, and does not override the very first statement in our country's founding document to other people's right to life. Guns take away lives -- plain and simple. And what liberty can be achieved for Americans if people are afraid of walking the streets in areas where gun violence is the norm? What happiness can be achieved by the American public once people's lives are shattered by the people who carry guns and use them for their own selfish agendas? Guns for self-protection -- what balogney. Unless someone has significant, long-term training with a gun, that person should NOT be carrying a LETHAL weapon. Crime statistics show that even people who have experience and training with guns do not always hit their targets. In a situation such as the ones at Columbine and Virginia Tech, where people are panicked and running from one place to another to avoid being shot, the possibility increases for innocent bystanders being shot by people who carry firearms for "self-defense" and, therefore, increases the bloodshed -- it does not lessen it. It is impossible to anticipate people's reaction when they are put in harm's way. Which is why police and law enforcement officials use extreme caution when confronted with such a situation, so as to avoid shooting innocent persons due either to mistaken identity or by accident when someone runs into their line of fire. In addition, well intentioned people who shoot and kill other people, even in self defense, have to struggle with the emotional and psychological trauma and guilt of taking a person's life for the rest of their own lives.
If we cannot eliminate the Second Amendment, then there should be a limit on the number of guns people can own and a limit on the amount of ammunition they can purchase, or at the very least, a significant and thorough background check, along with regular evaluations on a person's mental stability (which can change over time). This should be part of the new culture to protect American lives from this hidden and in many cases unpredictable threat.
On another but related topic, I am very disturbed by the news media's portrayal of the gunman. The header of one newspaper was "Portrait of a Killer" in huge print. A second article, in smaller print, was regarding the "Families in Mourning." It seems the news media has their priorities mixed up -- and are again romanticizing the violent culture, rather than focusing on the more important issue. The larger header also subconsciously implies that the killer himself is more important than the victims, which is sickening, and encourages other mentally unstable persons to think of killing others as a way to achieve immortality through the news media. The media should keep this in mind so as not to be the impetus for a deranged persons' deadly actions.
(Sent Apr 18, 2007 4:32:24 PM)
The argument that this type of tragedy, or that the type of person that commits a heinous act like this, would have somehow not occured if 'God' was in our schools or his life is ridiculous. This guy was obviously mentally ill, psychotic and depressed- and took his self-hate out on innocent victims.
Futher, this type of violence does not happen in other secular societies (e.g. Britain, France, Switzerland, Japan), so clearly there is not a correlation between separating church and state, and students dying- as some have suggested. Moreover, senseless shootings have happened in religious schools in the US- the massacre in Amish country a few months ago comes to mind as the most recent example. Let's not make this an opportunity to proseletize and pander- no one wants to have a religious finger wagging in their face while mourning the loss of life, especially when that argument does not make any logical sense.
We don't have to teach our youth about God to prevent something like this from happening, we need to teach our youth to respect each other as human beings. We need to teach our youth to recognize the warning signs of a mentally unstable person and empower them to do the right thing for others, even if it means they will be inconvenienced, chastised or temporarily uncomfortable. Teaching your kids about morality and God in your own home could help teach them respect and values, but let's be honest- throughout the history of man, to this day, all over the world, people relentlessly kill others in name of 'God,' in acts of fanaticism. From the Crusades and the Inquisition, to the Salem witch trials, to colonization to the conflicts in the Middle East and in Sudan, man's desire to prove that "my God is right and yours is wrong" has been the ultimate and most common reason for murder.
Just putting it into perspective...

I am listening to nbc and all thequestions being asked as to how to prevent this..new gun laws ,better policing etc. Psychological testing etc.but no one is mentioning that a psychiatist is the only doctor that does not look at the organ he treats. When the autopsy onDylan Klebold was done a large indentation was found in his brain which pobably contributed to his psychiatric problem. There is a geat clinic in California called the Amen clinic that is ground breaking work in analysingbrain scans. Wouldn't it be great if persons such as the killer who was refered to a psychiatrist was given a brain scan and they were able to determine whether he was on the type of anti-depressants he really needed.I have used Dr. Amen,s clinic for a serious depression which was not being helped by meds and psychoanalysis. I have since been put on different meds and am amazed at my improvement within a mere 4 weeks.
Again you have to ask
" WHY IS THE PYSCHIATRIST THE ONLY DOCTOR THAT DOES NOT LOOK AT THE ORGAN HE TREATS"
Wouldn't it be great if Virginia Tec ,in honor of the victims , set up a school to explore this science of "brain scans".....

As someone wrote earlier, "how did the university allow this type of student?" !!!!! Everything I read/see says he never said a word and he appeared anti-social. He clearly did not get the help he desperately needed. We need to start being "our brother's keepers" If someone had shown some real concern for the young man and been proactive in helping him, many lives would have been saved. I hope a lesson is learned from this

Yes this a terrible tragedy that happened at Virginia Tech. I've been watching the show todayand it seems there is more concern going towards the gun issue and not the cause of the situation.Officials had prior knowledge that this individual was capable of this but did nothing . Now the issue turns to tighter gun laws'the guns aren't the problem it's the people that use them,What about the lawfuf gun owners in this country when do we get our turn in the media? A fire arm does nothing untill a person pickes it up weither it be a non us citizen or not. Like the war in Iraq if you took all of the fire arms and laid them in a pile would they in theirselves start a war? I think not.I say we should do a better job of enforcing the laws we have, and if you're going to enact some new ones make some that will do some good like if some one commits a crime with a firearm any crime their is an auto matic 20yr. sentence added that must be served year for year no credit for good time,no part of it suspended it's in addition to the sentence for the crime. And you should have to be a US Citizen to purchase a fire arm. The 2nd. Ammendment is for Americans. It's time for this country to come back to us (Americans) A government for the people by the people I am A retired service member and a disabled Vet. And a gun owner. It seems like when something of this nature happens the politicans are on it like flies they seem to know what's best for us instead of us. If the officials incharge of Virginia tech. had listened to this information concerning this individual this might have been prevented. This should be shared with Chris Matthers too' More attention should be paid to the victims, instead of looking for issues and people to point fingers at. That can be done later

My heart goes out to the victims and their friends & families at VT- It seems that as more details unfold about the killer and the scenario that played out that day, the more we know should have been done after the first shootings in the morning. With "persons of interest" still on the loose, the police should have shut down the campus. Sounds like an overreaction, but we live in an age of terrorism- we have no choice but to take seemingly egregious precautions. This is not the first shooting incident in the past few weeks (CNN center in Atlanta comes to mind), and so law enforcement needed to treat this as a serious matter that was an active threat to all of the students and faculty on campus. Granted, who could have guessed that this would turn into the worst shooting in US history, but the police's worst case scenario should have been that the shooter would decide he is not done and would look to harm someone else. Hindsight, sometimes tragically, is always 20-20.
After the mourning, there is at least one key take-away from this tragedy- that this absolutely must result in profound reform of our gun laws. There is no longer an argument for just about anyone to have the right to bear arms, when this is what we do to each other when we have access to deadly weapons. As was the case for many of us in Kindergarten, one bad apple can spoil it for everyone. That's just it. The right to bear arms is as significant today as the right to refuse lodging to a British Redcoat. There is no reason why I should be able to obtain a gun just by flashing my driver's license in under a week. Get guns off of our streets, out of the hands of psychos, and we automatically decrease this type of senseless violence.

As a parent of a student from Campbell County, Tennesse (School shooting Nov. 2005) I can completely understand the fear that the parents @ V-Tech experienced. To actually know that your child is only a few feet from possibly being in harm's way is torture. My heart goes out to the whole state of Virginia. We will never be the same because of this tragedy on April 16th. Let's try to learn from this horrific incident and make smarter laws to protect our children and ourselves. It's obvious that the school personnel didn't know what to do in this situation! I feel that our school personnel need to be trained on what to do and be accounted for it. I feel for all these families that are dealing with this awful loss of a child/parent or just a best friend. I acknowledge Pres. Good Day,
Something I have noticed with all of the students that have been interviewed on TV is how well spoken and poised they are. One can only assume the victims were of the same high quality. I was a young Hokie many years ago. My brother attended VPI, and my Dad was on the faculty. So, I have a strong connection to Tech. Blacksburg has always been an oasis of learning in in the middle of nowhere. If one can be murdered in Blacksburg, it can happen anywhere. Bless eveeryone's soul who has been affected by this.

May God help the families of the students slain. No one expects to outlive their children. May their memories given them comfort. I pray that this senseless act of violence will never be repeated. My prayers and deepest condolences are with all the families affected, and with all the students going through this tragedy. Lastly, I pray for the speedy recovery of those students injured.

I wonder if Bush mourns the thousands of Iraqi children...from age 5 to 18...that he condemed to death when he left Afghanistan and invaded Iraq. I mean, we all knew that tremendous voilence would occur there w/o Saddam Hussein.
I guess since those kids are far away and of a different culture and race...they aren't as important.
Either that, or the war-hungry scaredy-cats in this country don't want to face up to what their cowardice and bloodlust has wrought.
