The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

This Friday marks the end of a very long week for the entire nation. In today's vlog, Brian talks about some of the news we haven't reported, as well as tonight's continuation of the Virginia Tech shootings story, which has dominated so much of our coverage this week.

To All of the Nightly crew -

You've had a week beyond description and you've done your jobs well.

Here in the Northeast, Spring has arrived and the weather we've all waited for. My hope for you is that you find some time for rest and renewal during the next few days - isn't that the real story of Spring?

Thank you again for your efforts this week and enjoy what Mother Nature has sent.

Mea culpa accepted.

It may, in subsequent weeks, be instructive to look at how foreign news media covered VT.

Much to my surprise, Al Jazeera covered many of the VT press conferences live on their English service. The dimension they added to the story is how other cities and other countries deal with issues such as student mental health in Qatar, gun control in Ireland, and medical records in Malaysia.

I would conclude, with the BBC, NHK, IPTV Thailand as well as Al Jazeera as my sample, that there's a good deal of reporting not only of the facts and the healing process at VT but a universally international self-examination of mental health systems, medical records and firearms control.

Maybe something positive can come out of that.

We'll see you here next week.
