Faces from the Gulf: Ricardo Pustanio

070209_mardigras "It's a glint in somebody's eye. It's a feeling. It's an emotion. And If I can put that happiness back into somebody else's life, then it puts happiness into mine." -- Ricardo Pustanio, Mardi Gras artist

We met up with Pustanio this week as he placed the finishing touches on Mardi Gras floats for the Krewe of Mid City. He believes Mardi Gras is a welcome distraction for residents who continue to struggle with rebuilding their homes and lives. This year's carnival season is expected to be larger than last year's, when the city was forced to scaled back the festivities following Katrina. Prior to the storm, Mardi Gras generated approximately $1 billion for the city's tourist economy.

Happiness is just that. And if thats what makes him happy then let him know he made me happy with his sentiments. I guess thats what art is really all about. I hope the Krewe of Mid City Mardi Gras Floats do just that this year to all those watching, and Ricardo comes out smiling.

I think his work from the photo is excellent and I'd love to see more. I might just go to the New Orleans Mardi Gras and shake his hand. He deserves many kadu's for his great efforts.

Pustanios' is right in his beliefs. And I hope his floats put the smile and magic back into Mardi Gras 2007.

I saw the report on him last year. I think he was one of the driving forces in helping to bring Mardi Gras back from the devastation.

I'll will be there this year and will let you guys know if he does. And most certainly I think he will single handedly.

Laissez le bon temps rouler!!!!! Let the good times roll Louisiana!

Just had to save that photo! People putting their passion into their colorful work... and having fun, too! :) Somehow we are ALL going to make it!

Another wonderful post--thanks! Hope this year's Mardi Gras is as large as expected and draws lots of tourists--that would be a good sign of recovery. Blessings to Pustanio and everybody else who's working on those floats, which must be a feast for the eyes, and all the other preparations! The hard-working people of New Orleans deserve all the happiness and enjoyment they can get. I wish I could see Mardi Gras in person--but since I can't, I'll be there "in spirit."
