Troop surge in Iraq

Editor's note: Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski broke the news last night on our broadcast and has written this follow-up for MSNBC.com.

Although nothing is final until President Bush puts his stamp on it, administration officials tell NBC News the president has all but decided on a temporary surge of additional American forces into Iraq in an effort to bring sectarian violence in Baghdad under control.

While no one is talking specific numbers, military officials believe it would involve some 20,000 additional soldiers and Marines.

Most of the increase would be achieved by extending the deployments of those troops already in Iraq by 90 days, and accelerating the deployments for troops scheduled to deploy by sending them into Iraq sooner.

Same reason we can't get Italy, France, Spain, & Germany to pull their weight in Afghanistan

Did you know that besides this well-publicized troop "surge," a program has been devised to spur jobs and economic recovery in Iraq? Why can't the UN, European Union, and other international organizations take care of Iraq's recovery, instead? Why can't America take care of the recovery of some areas in our country, especially New Orleans, the rest of Louisiana's storm-ravaged parishes, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and the rest of the area devastated by Katrina and Rita? I'd say the Bush Administration's inaction regarding this is shameful and it reflects poorly on America when we jump to help others overseas recover from wars or disasters, when what we're doing for our fellow Americans is inadequate, at best.

We could always just quit the middle east, and when we're attacked again use Hezbollah's rate of exchange. In their eyes we're equal to Israel, and one Israeli is worth 4800 of their people. So if we're attacked again, and we lose say 3000 civilians we just send the bombers out and kill 14,400,000 of their's. Glad i don't live in a target city :-)

I’m hardly surprise by people's reaction on Bush plan of increasing the number of troops in Iraq. The liberal media have been feeding them negative news day in and day out. It is only logical that the American people have the perception that we are loosing total control of the situation. The mainstream media have made an extraordinary effort to dramatize the effect of US casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Three thousand American soldier killed seems to have hit the psyche of the American public. More than the 126,000 killed in WW1 in the1915s, 420, 000 American killed in WW2 in the1940s, 33,000 killed in the Korean war of 1950s, 58,200 killed in Vietnam in the 1960s. And yet, the American people rallied behind with the sitting President during those difficult time. Make no mistake 3,000 dead is 3 thousand too many. The pain and anguish of love ones left by the void of dead soldiers are without doubt unbearably heavy. American soldiers have been paying the ultimate price for us to enjoy freedom and liberty.

The fact that we are at war with Terrorism, whose ultimate goal is the total annihilation of the United States, should be enough for the mainstream media to reconsider their venomous editorial comment that harms the US war effort. A high ranking Al Qaeda official even took the credit when the Democrats won the majority of both house and senate. Our enemies read, listen, applaud or even cheer the way our mainstream media reports all the negative news and non of the positive news about the war effort. The fact that we are in 21st century warfare, the possibility of mass death or destruction is more of possibility than the previous wars. We are dealing with fanatical and rabid enemy who would rather die than live. American fight to live another day while our adversary will fight to die to see America destroyed.

This is a global war of great importance. American people are not aware that we are fighting all over the world with Iraq and Afghanistan as focal point because mainstream medias will ignore the obvious. Thousands of American soldiers are helping Philippine military in Southern Philippines battling the Islamic Abu-say yap terrorist, US intelligence and special forces are in Indonesia battling Jemaah Islamiyah Terrorist , North Africa Al Qaeda of Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, Fanatical Hamas movement in Israel, Al Qaeda movement in Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Spain, Italy, France, Australia and many more countries to mention.
Cliché “ like the saying goes this war effort is fought 90 percent mental and 10% physical ” and our enemy knew these.

Abandon diplomacy...forget about involving other Nations, and let's do it alone and see how many more Arabs we can get to hate us. If we as Americans can vote to remove what has been a failed Congress it is time we ask our elected officials to consider the same for George W. I wasn't for impeachment but I am beginning to believe it will be the only way we stop this run away train from destroying our Country.

Tell me that this effort by Bush doesn't fit the Project for a New American Century and its recommendations. W. doesn't get it! Is civil war only a civil war when Bush says so? Vietnam by many analysts' point of view began failing when more middle class soldiers lost their lives as the idea of a lowest class war, off the screen of most Americans, came into their lives with the draft. Is there any difference with Vietnam that Bush isn't acknowledging? The twenty to thirty thousand troops may be under the need for a draft requirement, but what is the point? Sectarian violence and civil war mask any attribute for a military victory and isn't this what the George H.W. Bush administration warned against? Leave it to his son to brandish total hubris and arrogance to reengage the enemy. Hell, why are we there at all?

How many times did he say he was going to listen to his generals? Like all of Bush's tortured statements, there is an element of truth. He'll listen to the ones that agree with him. Like when he said pre-2000 that bull chip about "if we come with humility they'll love us, but if we come with arrogance they'll hate us" and nobody thought to ask him which he intended to do, because he was right - we came in arrogance, and they hate us. Worst. President. Ever.

Well it looks like Bush do what he said Stay the course. We will see maybe 500 plus soldiers killed a month now and as Connie Rice said their deaths are investments. Prime Minister Maliki knows he has no support for the Iraq people on President Bush. As we heard his hand picked people for the hanging of Saddam cheer to their leader Al Sadi. As for the money Bush is asking for to get jobs and rebuild Iraq one would think after spending 2 Trillion dollars that something would show for that money.
Brian I hate to say this but I will I told you so.
I knew what was really happening in Iraq because of the up dated information from my son and yes Richard gave his insight. So Iraq has been in a civil war and Bush has made to many deals to turn back now. Cheney being summoned by the Saudi King was the clue to who the deals were made with. The corrupt plan was made before 2000 and Cheney had to get in office for the big business war profiteering. This Administration has taken corruption to a high level by using the Nixon play book. Let's hope the American people pull together and stop this madness.
Americans voted to save the troops now we have to fight to save our country to.
