The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Dear Brian,
I have been a very long time viewer of the Nightly News. You are filling some mighty big shoes of those who have gone before you, and are doing a GREAT job.
My question to you is: How many of our young men and women who were sent to Iraq are wounded? I know the figure will be astounding, but - this needs to be spoken, talked about, and put into the proper perspective. My heart aches for all of the young lives lost , but sometimes dying is easier than living with a debilitating handicap brought on while serving in Iraq. Lets get the figures out on those who died, and those who will forever be handicaped because they answered the call to duty. We cannot help those who gave their lives, but we can help those were, or are wounded in action. They and their families need to know that their sacrifice has not been forgotten.
Thank you and I will see you on the nightly news.

I was over at the Scientific America blog and they said (on Jan 10),

"In what is apparently NOAA's first acknowledgment via press release under the current White House that greenhouse warming is real, the statement reads in part:

A contributing factor to the unusually warm temperatures throughout 2006 also is the long-term warming trend, which has been linked to increases in greenhouse gases."

Since this came so close to the revisited in-depth piece that NBC Nightly News did, I was wondering if your original interview and revision is what caused them to change their mind. Did NBC approach NOAA after your Jan 05 interview asking them directly (as Brian implied might be the case) if global warming might be affecting the El Nino event itself?

Even as a half-hour news program, you guys did a good job on the in-depth report! It's nice to think I might have had a little something to do about it :) Apart from our spelling (including mine) I think we bloggers raised some pretty good arguments! Even though the West is unusually cold today, I'll bet much of the country is still above average.
