The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Early Nightly is up

Earlynightly_61The weatherman in Washington, D.C., says it will be 70 degrees tomorrow. New York City hasn't seen a single snowflake yet this year. What's going on with this wacky weather?

As Brian says in today's vlog, that's a question the broadcast hopes to answer for you tonight.

It is irresponsible of NBC Nightly News and Dennis Feltgen to claim absolutely that the current weather isn't related to global warming but is a common effect of an El Nino. It seems like the extended extreme warmth and lack of snow is global (in Moscow like in Detroit); here in Michigan it is certaily unprecedented. Second, why has the la Nina-el Nino cycle changed so greatly in recent decades? 1997-1998 was a monster, everyone agrees. La Nina used to be the dominant pattern in the cycle and cycles used to be milder and much shorter. Global warming could be having a serious effect on this pattern, or at least could be making its effects much worse. Finally, there is some discussion as to whether an extreme El Nino could permanently alter global weather patterns. This was the case in 1976. Stay tuned, and don't sit back and crank up the electricity because NBC said we're okay.

According to WVIT, there were cherry blossoms spotted this week in New London. The drill for the last few years has been to bring winter hiking gear on ski trips up north. If I were to go this weekend, I could forget the winter gear entirely.

A deteriorating situation in New Orleans? What are people returning home from Houston?
