The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Early Nightly is up

Earlynightly_56Brian is resting his voice again today, but will anchor the broadcast tonight. That allows NBC's Dawn Fratangelo to make her vlog debut.

She previews tonight's top story -- President Bush's year-end news conference -- and her report in our "American Boomer" series, about baby boomers caring for their aging parents. She recommends these two Web sites for people who want additional information: eldercare.gov and caremanager.org.

Maybe instead of "equitable" I should have said "only", since we can no longer count on volunteers in mass! I expect the build up will have to be rapid.. I just don't see any other way to recruit and train 30 to 80 thousand troops in 6 to 12 month period.

You have not heard me say I approve, and my opinion is just that, my opinion.. I just happen to know it's right on! Look for a draft announcement in some form before the end of January!

Hi Brian,

I'm wishing you well concerning your voice. I want to thank you very, very much for always keeping New Orleans, as often as you can, in your broadcast. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

"The DRAFT is now likely the only equitable option to increase the military"....EQUITABLE?? Yeah, just like the Vietnam Era draft...Mr. Deferment and Mr. AWOL are our Veep and Pres. The day the Bush twins are drafted or enlist and are shipped off to 'party' in Iraq is the day I become a believer. It will be EQUITABLE just like everything else the administration has done the past 6 years, the richest top 1% will be MORE equal and the middle class and poor will be sent to slaughter. There will be no "light at the end of the tunnel" until napoleon and duck-taped dick leave office.

As I sat here watching the Presidential Year End News Conference, I was struck, instantly with a mixed message which incorporated candor, and at the same time a hidden agenda. Sounded much more like a State of the Union address than a news Conference.

First, and most importantly will be the re-institution of the DRAFT.. The DRAFT is now likely the only equitable option to increase the military, yet one which the administration vehemently denied for years while the DOD was managed by Rumsfeld.

Second, the President admitted to using "Wishful Thinking" as a way of expressing how the war in Iraq was going, instead of using factual data. I will only hope this signals an end to the " Hope & Pray" approach to success in Iraq. Success in Iraq will be seen only when we implement the Military strategy FIRST, and the Social and Political strategy SECOND. Our military strategy in Iraq can not be dictated by the Iraqis. If that is the plan, best we get out now!

For the first time, in a long time, the President I helped elect some years ago, began to shed some light on the subject, instead of creating more fog! Light and clarity are always more invigorating than dark & dismal fog. No more smoke & mirrors please!

Now if we can Duct Tape Cheney, we might actually begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel !
