There is a rhythm in Washington as November slowly becomes December, and that rhythm is perpetuated by annual holiday events. Today at the White House a horse drawn wagon plodded up the northwest driveway and delivered for the Christmas season a 18 1/2 ft. Douglas fir that will sit in the White House Blue Room. Welcoming the wagon was first lady Laura Bush and White House staffers who will begin decorating the tree later today.

Similarly, the tree that will sit on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol was also delivered today, a half hour before the one for the White House -- not that there's any significance there. The Capitol tree, however -- is grander -- a 65-foot Douglas fir that was trucked in from the National Forest on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. It comes complete with 10,000 lights and 3,000 ornaments.

And soon there will be a third tree -- supposedly the grandest of all -- the National Christmas Tree. It will be lit Dec. 7 on the Ellipse, south of the White House grounds. The president and the first lady will do the honors, illuminating the tree for this year's Pageant of Peace.

So in a city of monuments and memorials, every December brings holiday trees that embrace a common theme -- peace... a theme worth noting as 2006 draws to an end.

Hmm I don't believe anyone died as the result of a Clinton indiscretion. What's with these people who can accept the killing and maiming of thousands of innocent people, but who have such a problem with, shhh, "sex?"

Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy McVeigh served too. That doesn't make their opinions unchallengeable. As far as worst Presidents ever no one did more to harm this country than Carter.

Thanks for your service bill

No...I didn't serve in the military. I didn't duck your question. I just know where you are going to go with your comments. But then again, you never answered my question about the pervert president we had before President Bush. He was and as far as I am concerned, still is a pervert. He didn't care about you...only who he could get to crawl under the desk to satisify his desires. He makes me want to puke. Of course you would be thinking he is the best we have ever had....wrong again. I too like you don't like to suffer the "fools" who have ruined this country with their cravings. Merry Christmas Bill...

KAREN: YOU DUCKED MY QUESTION. DID YOU SERVE IN THE U.S. MILITARY? IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION: NAH, I'M NOT BITTER. I JUST DON'T SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY, AND WE AMERICANS CURRENTLY "ENJOY" THE BIGGEST FOOL EVER TO OCCUPY THE WHITE HOUSE. I ALSO FEAR FOR AMERICA'S FUTURE AFTER 8 YRS OF THE ABSOLUTELY WORST PRESIDENT IN OUR NATION'S ENTIRE HISTORY! MERRY CHRISTMAS, AGAIN.

BILL ROSELLE...ARE YOU BITTER? I DETECT A BIT OF BITTERNESS!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TOO....

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INNANE OBSERVATIONS, KAREN. I SERVED HONORABLY IN THE U.S. MILITARY ON ACTIVE DUTY, NO LESS, UNLIKE, OF COURSE, MESSRS. BUSH OR CLINTON. DID YOU SERVE? IF NOT, MERRY CHRISTMAS...

And BILL ROSELLE, you are certainly allowed to feel like you wish. The men and women join up for a career to do what they are doing now. If you sign up to do it, it's you job. I think the majority of the armed forces support our government reguardless of how you or anyone else feels. Your hatred for our president is visable. Did you feel this way when President Clinton was sleeping with the young girl? Or was that funny to you? Be grumpy if you wish....you don't have to enjoy the photo or the White House decorations....WE WILL FOR YOU!!!

GIVEN WHAT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION IS DOING TO THIS COUNTRY AND TO OUR NATION'S MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM, THE WHITE HOUSE SHOULD NOT BE FESTOONED FOR CHRISTMAS. IT SHOULD BE DRAPED IN BLACK CREPE!

Hey (!)...I am just sick and tired of all you liberals simply throwing stones at the President. You judge him all the time. It is a nice photo with a tree going to the White House to be decorated for Christmas. The children are enjoying the ride there. Why can't you let people enjoy it? You have to make rude comments about every move. I hope you had plenty of rudeness to go around when Bill Clinton was doing "his thing" up there in Washington. Hey...I didn't like what he did, but I didn't fill the nice photos with rude comments!

i said nothing about any kind of relationship...
you brought that up.
i am reffering to perjury in a federal court.
a crime for you and I...

Get over what, Karen? Our fascist government going through motions that mean nothing, because their isn't a Christian with 50 miles of Washington? You couldn't get God in Bush's WH with a cattle prod, so what exactly are these smiling fools trying to convince us of? They hate trees?

For goodness sakes...you people take a simply nice photo of Christmas Cheer and make it sick! Get over it!!!

Its Christmas, be of good cheer. The tree is a symbol so bringing in several is always a good idea. And by the way trees are grown and harvested to be used as christmas trees so they wouldn't be grown if they weren't going to be used.

I've never understood the concept of Merry Christmas, kill a tree. Why don't we bring in a big, live tree and plant it at the White House? Use it every Christmas until it dies of old age.

I'm the person who thinks Air Force One should be down-sized to a Lear Jet - or better yet, the President and staff could fly commercial airline. I'll bet we would have some major changes to the whole flying experience very quickly!

Recycle, folks! This includes recycling your body - be a donor!

yeah, Mick - war crimes are a lot easier to explain than hetrosexual relationships. Your kids sure are lucky.

at least we can send our kids to see the tree.
the last guy that lived in that house had many issues i did not care to explain to my kids...

Oh for crying out loud. Are you liberals just permanently sad? Your comments are depressing!

Didn't Watt (Sec of Interior of the Reagan Bliss years) declare fir trees as polluting killers? I sure the secret service keeps its eye on this dangerous threat to George's Christmas drinking, and thanks for taking one of these vicious killers out of the picture and returning democracy to the forrest.

Shouldn't be long now until some democrat blames Bush for lying them into Christmas based on lies about the economy. Probably even blame him for the people they knocked down and stepped on fighting their way into a store.

Wouldn't it be a nice symbolic gesture if Laura Bush did not put up and decorate the 18 foot tree in the White House (if I remember correctly, she decorated with fresh flowers that had to be replenished daily last year - I assume we taxpayers are paying for such nonsense- what a waste!) Instead, wouldn't it be nice if she donated the money that goes into such silliness to shelters that feed the poor and destitute? Just a thought.

Bush lied and trees died. I'm sure "some people" can come up with a way to blame the death of these trees on Israel. How many years did it take to grow these trees? Was it longer than World War 2? These trees could have been out there fighting the most serious problem we face today. No not terrorism, but global warming.

Man I have issues :-)

It is hard to get enthused about the White House Chistmas tree. Even though I am from the northwest and we do love our trees like some druid priests of long ago Salisbury Plains, Britain, the stain of Bush's foreign policies, his penchant for mistakes, his blood-stained complexion, Christmas trees do not a fun festooned flippancy make. It simply isn't working in hte White House this year or for that matter the next four years. Another gloomy year is forecast in Washington!
