THE TOP OF THE WEEK

CNBC's Maria Bartoromo has just interviewed President Bush at the White House. Beyond his comments on oil and the economy and CEO compensation, I was fascinated by one question she asked him: Do you ever use Google?

The President answers, in part: "Occasionally. One of the things I've used on the Google is to pull up maps... I forgot the name of the program, but you get the satellite, like I kind of like to look at the ranch... reminds me of where I want to be sometimes."

The President went on to talk about e-mail, and why he doesn't send or receive them. We'll have a portion of the interview tonight.

Also tonight: the war in Iraq and the Bush Administration -- we'll look at the movement over the past few days and where policy is likely headed. We'll also check in on the ground action... and the talk of the country domestically.

We'll have the Skilling sentencing, and we'll look at the sudden rise in Obama '08 speculation coming off the weekend. We will also remember the actress Jane Wyatt tonight. For those of us who grew up with her on television, she was the archetypal "TV Mom."

Speaking of television, many in the industry will gather tonight at the Waldorf for the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame Dinner. Those of us at the NBC tables have something special to cheer about tonight: the induction of Tim Russert. I never knew a Hall of Famer. That changes tonight!

We hope you can join us for our Monday night broadcast.

It makes me feel like an English scholar every time Bush speaks. This tell you how clueless this President is from this latest interview with Maria. I just hope "the internets," "the Korean peninshula," "the Google," "Global Warming is warming the globe," are not in the next version of Websters dictionary. Maybe, the word "Bushisms" will make that cut. It is an absolutely embarrassment to hear that interview from an unpolished President that stresses on the No Child Left Behind. Brian, please do not slip into the Bushspeak foreign language on your show and say "NBC Nightlys News!"

And isn't it interesting that when you look at the Google Earth satellite picture of Washington, DC the White House is able to be viewed but the Vice Presidential compound is all blurry.

Maria asked Bush if he ever "Googles anyone". What was that supposed to mean? That is not the same as asking if he ever uses Google, but rather asks if he uses Google to look up some person by name. Why would she ask that? How often does someone Google a persons name? Does she use Google and understand how it is used and what it is used for commonly?

Doesn't George realize he can re-direct every spy satellite in the arsenal to over-fly Crawford? Like he's not keeping a close watch on Sheehan's spread, already. He could use infrared to find the dead timber. He could photograph in every energy level in the spectrum - probably find poison oak and maybe even bee hives. Radar map every square inch from space - I think it would make a wonderful hobbie for him for the next two years.

First we have "the Internets," then we had "the Korean peninshula," now we have "the Google." The language of this president is not that of everyday Americans and it makes me wonder if he really made it through that Camus guy he bragged about to Brian in the New Orleans interview. It's very odd.

Stop googling and go back to Crawford, Mr. Bush. And stay there before you do any more harm to this great country or Iraq.

Oil prices will be through the roof November 8!

Hmmmm...according to Marc Schulz, 40% of UK children don't know where the US is located. In this age of geographical ineptness, I wonder how many American children know where the UK is located. And I'm with Amanda about the idiotic remarks by the NY Republican Senatorial candidate about Hillary Clinton--that reminds me of the fact that during the '04 campaign much had been made of the fact that John Kerry had been having Botox injections. I mean, regarding candidates, people (including other candidates) should focus on substantive issues--not on whether a candidate has had Botox, plastic surgery, etc.

Brian, heard your recent radio interview with Bob Costas on his new XM radio show which included your mention of this site.

Glad to know of the site and also, congrats on a fascinating hour with Costas and all the issues you and Bob addressed during the interview.

Congrats Tim, and I hope the honor goes to Maria before long, too.

This isn't actually covered, but, I just read on an MSN news site an article about 'ozone layer hole record'. I find this alarming, and if anyone from the msnbc news team or expert in this field could comment I would appreciate it.

Thank you kindly.

While I think NBC does a good job,I think the media overall is going too easy on this Administration.Wasn't it about six months ago that this Administration and right wing radio started the propaganda campaign blaming the media for Iraq?Remember you and the rest of the "left wing" news media were not telling all the good news that was happening over there? All the inroads that were being made? How the training of Iraqi troops was moving ahead? Why not bring this up at the daily questions with Tony Snow?It isn't the media that wounding 500 soldiers a month. It's a failed mission that started out with incompetence and has gone down hill ever since. It's no wonder they don't want to use the "stay the course" line anymore.I'm sure they'll come up with another cute line while the body count climbs.

He can't tell the truth about anything. All I could think about is the Wizard of OZ. The GOP should stop Bush from doing interviews he's sounds more stupid everyday. Bush should just read from a script and not talk without it. Now I understand why when asked about Iraq or policy that he's doesn't know anything.
He's just a figure head not a President or a leader. The others are running the govenment without Bush's knowledge. No wonder the US is in chaos.

Thank you, Brian and Maria, for the best laugh I've had in weeks. The interview with President Bush and computer use was so, well, so, George W.

Look, I don't care if you post this or not. I just want to express my gratitude to Brian Williams for his in-depth coverage of Rosemary Kennedy and Jane Wyatt's passing.

For such a young man to understand the importance of people like these to those of us a decade his senior is simply amazing!

Brian, It appears that you are very naive when it comes to the internet. Thank heavens that the President is smart enough to stay off of the internet. Have you, or any of your counterparts, or anyone writing in on this segment, ever heard of internet security ? There are companies making billions trying to secure the internet, and have yet to come up with a 100% solution. And you want the President on the internet ? Stop your negative reporting - I'm now a former viewer.

Yeah, I'm too young to remember Jane Wyatt as anything other than Spok's mom. I hope that he remembers to attempt to shed a couple tears in her memory :)

And kudos to Tim Russert! A well-deserved honor for a top-notch guy.

Why is it okay for Google to post satellite pictures of nuclear plants, weapons labs and storage facilities, and the President's Ranch when people have been arrested for taking pictures of these same things from ground level?
I don't get it.

Congratulation Maria and Tim. Maria, you earned your interview at the White House because of your professional crafts and trades in covering economic news and actions on CNBC. Also Tim, congrats. Regularly, I watch your show on webcast Sunday nights. Three Cheers at Maria and Tim. How nice it is that the mightiest man in the world uses Google EARTH, that's the name of the product. Why he isn't using the tool of the government, NASA WorldWind? It's a shame that the President doesn't use the appropriate tools to getting his knowledge. He also can show 40% of the UK children where the US is located, so they know it. According to a study, 40% of UK children doesn't know where the US is situated.

Way to go, Tim Russert! Congratulations! You have more than earned this honor!

As for George googling his ranch... would that he would simply resign and retreat there permanently. Sigh.

Brian: I find the President's comments on google encouraging. If he spends all his time staring at a satellite image of his ranch in Texas, it keeps him too busy to google an invasion of Iran...

Let me guess, the President doesn't use email because he simply can't fathom how to do it, just a further demonstration of his ineptitude as President.

Anybody care to start a lottery for how fast oil prices will rise post election day? Enjoy the lower prices while you can.

Congratulations to Tim Russert -- people may not share his views and opinions but he is always a professional.

P.S. Why no mention of the idiotic remarks made by the NY Republican candidate for senate about Senator Clinton?

Hey, Jane Wyatt was Spock's "human" mom in Star Trek! Don't even get me started on how great that show was... As George Takei (Sulu) once said, “Star Trek prevailed for many reasons, but at its core it states that PLURALISM is our strength!” Just look at how every series showed how much people of ALL nationalities can accomplish when they simply work together. We had Russians, Scotsmen, African American and lady captains, male and female doctors, men and women engineers, and aliens and artificial life forms of all types imaginable. They’ve even showed a tolerance for the ideological extremes of the Klingons, Spock's battle with human emotions, and how even those raised with “Ferengi values” can overcome their conditioning to become a valuable member of the crew (Nog - DS9).

The show’s writers also portrayed the dangers of nationalism, hatred, genocide, torture and most other human failings. They even showed us how such evils can lurk within any society, such as the Federation Itself... Their writers equally portrayed the values of human courage, our desire to learn and explore, and the need to maintain inalienable HUMAN RIGHTS regardless of the situation!
