Persian Gulf oil threatened
U.S. Naval forces are on a "heightened state of alert" in the Persian Gulf today after the United Kingdom issued a maritime warning that al-Qaida may be preparing to attack oil interests, including refineries and offshore oil platforms.
According to U.S. Navy officials, the alert has been ordered "as a precaution" based on general public threats made by al-Qaida and additional intelligence about possible terrorist attacks on oil facilities. The officials say however the alert is NOT based on any specific intelligence that pinpoints a possible time or place for an attack.
The British maritime warning, which cautions commercial shipping and oil operators to be vigilant, does mention the ground-based Rastannurah oil facility in Saudi Arabia.
Oil markets appear to have shrugged off the maritime warning. The price of crude is down slightly this morning.

What amazes me is that the Republicans think the American people believe that they are the party we need to deal with the terrorists. They have cried "wolf" too many times. And 9/11 happened on THEIR watch.

The White House is beating its Terror Drums again for the elections...or they are getting ready for a staged attack in the Persian Gulf to get us into a conflict with Iran...Don't trust them people...they lied to us about Iraq/WMDs and so much more...Vote November 7th for honesty and a new direction in the country!!!

Consider this, should an attack take place upon an oil structure somewhere in the Persian Gulf, what the scenario or setup would entail for a convenient attack so close to the midterm elections. Should an attack take place on an oil structure, consider the age of that structure and if it is an old contraption that may have needed upgrading in the first place. Part of the reason going to war with Iraq in the first place was due to the old infrastructure within the oil processing. Old outdated material needed to be replaced so as to allow greater volumes to be pumped required billions upon billions of dollars of restructuring. Thus, some oil structures are so outmoded that these become "available" to be targeted for destruction and replaced with current, modernized oil processing plants. In this light, these facilities can serve a double interest by being "blown up" in an action which demonstrates accesibility to terrorists and to underly the need toward continued republican "oversight" of congress. This is indeed a viable approach and may have been considered within the Hollowed Halls of the White House, given the billions of dollars in profits and potential payback to political purposes. Provide an old structure for demolition and say that it came from terroriststs, maintain the need for fearmongering, and put on a good show. This fulfills the functions of a fetid government end! Completely viable scenario which is on the mark!

I'm with Amanda and Caveat Emptor--there is something funny (as in strange) about the timing of this announcement. Whether it's today's alert or yesterday's bringing up same-sex marriage, or any of the other red herrings raised by the Bush Administration, they're "wagging the dog" to make sure voters forget the one thing which, were they to remember it and keep it in mind, they would vote the GOP out in a voter tsunami.
This is the Bush Administration response to Katrina and its subsequent neglect of the affected areas of Louisiana and Mississippi afterwards. They know that if the mainstream media were to show pictures of the devastation in New Orleans that still stretches for miles and miles, streets that look like they could be in a ghost town, and small businesses closed for lack of customers, and stories about homesick survivors in Houston unable to return to Louisiana because of the lack of affordable housing and people in Mississippi who, with all that's left of their houses slabs, are stuck in FEMA trailers waiting for the grants that would help them rebuild. Or stories about hardships in New Orleans and Mississippi's Gulf Coast communities due to electrical, water, sewer and other infrastructure problems--not to mention insufficient schools, hospitals, and other things one would expect any civilized community to have.
So, as President Bush did out in California at the height of the Katrina catastrophe, when he strummed some musician's guitar as New Orleans burned, he is continuing to act as if the situation in the storm zone merits very little attention if any. This in spite of his Jackson Square promises that America would "do what it takes" and "stay as long as it takes" to ensure that New Orleans "will rise again." He has instead, for all intents and purposes, lost New Orleans.
And the mainstream media--instead of doing what it should, which is keeping a focus on New Orleans, the rest of Louisiana's devastated parishes, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast and their people's need for help, are practicing self-censorship, serving as Bush Administration lackeys by keeping Katrina-related news off the air. I regularly read the Times-Picayune, Baton Rouge Advocate, and other Louisiana papers online so I know there is no lack of such news out of the storm zone. So a mainstream media news blackout is going on. This is morally wrong.
Folks, it may seem as if Katrina and its effects are a local issue merely of interest to those in Louisiana, Mississippi, and maybe a few neighboring states, but this is really a NATIONAL issue because it has to do not only with how this government deals with major disasters (or anything similar such as a terrorist attack), but also handles the rebuilding and recovery process--both of which it has failed so miserably at regarding Katrina. A big catastrophe can happen ANYWHERE-- even where you live.
It's time for the mainstream media to bring regular Katrina coverage back and remind Americans why it would not be a good idea to present President Bush with a Congress full of GOP yes-persons who'll support his incompetent policies every step of the way.

The timing on this is just too coincidental. Elections looming, the Republicans not doing well in the polls. Would not put it past the Bush Administration to go to our good friends and get them to put this out there......give the administration the ability to say see it's not us saying be scared, it's the British.

This should not be surprising in light of the midterm elections upcoming. Not only should the Department of Homeland Security be on edge, but every voter as this purient administration attempts to induce scaremongering right up and until the election day. Of course, Al Quaida is still out there scaring the very fabric out of life, just like the Boogey Man under the bed that comes out on a moments notice. What bothers me is that this may be something which this administartion may follow through on simply to ignite further fear for I am of the concern that if it is true that this administration is paying off Al Qaida through extortion as Senator Levin of Michigan has ascertained, should we then expect this government to not simply fake an attack but allow an attack to occur? After the findings of post-9/11, I would not put it past this administration! Now that it is both known that THERMATE was found in the heep of the twin towers and that seismic events attested by Columbia University's seismicity stations demonstrate these buildings were subject to being imploded prior to the plane crashes, this government does perform heinous actions toward its own ends of inhumane activities and purporting an outside interest(Al Qaida) is soley doing this. This government needs total republican control to continue its illegal intersts and that means scaring the public to continue to elect its puppets to maintain control at whatever cost. Therefore, continued scaremongering with maybe a collateral attack on an oil structure might convey that shock-and-awe that this government wants, not on the terrorsist but on the voting public!
