The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Our Friday focus

Once again, we will look at what many say is the opening stage of a U.S policy shift on Iraq. David Gregory is at the White House and Richard Engel is in Baghdad for us. We will also look at one of the hot Senate races in the country: Campbell Brown is just back from Missouri and will have that for us.  Ron Allen has the story I very badly wanted to get on the broadcast tonight: the human remains that are still being found, intact, in New York City -- five years after 9/11.

Tonight, Kevin Tibbles will report on Good Times for Detroit. Let's face it -- it has been a tough slog for the Motor City, especially with the cuts in the car business. Sometimes a slot in the World Series can have a sweeping, therapeutic effect. And while we're on the subject: those poor Mets last night.  What a heart-breaker.

And since it's Friday night, that means we have a "Making a Difference" segment. Lisa Daniels has a story tonight we are urging everyone to see. When Senior Producer Tracey Lyons simply tried to describe the story to our afternoon editorial meeting, people started to tear up. As Lisa blogged below, it's an emotional story about a wonderful woman who runs a wonderful program for some children who haven't always enjoyed society's advantages.

KNOWING YOUR SPOTS
All political junkies know the so-called "Daisy Ad" which ran exactly once against Goldwater in the '64 election. Real aficionados recall the snippet of President Johnson's voice begins with the words, "These are the stakes..." Well, those very words (aimed at the other side) have surfaced in a new RNC ad -- it's a limited ad buy, so the RNC is employing the time-tested tactic of putting it "out there" on the Web and on cable -- hoping outlets will run it in its entirety (like this link) and hoping people like us will write about the coincidence.

"HONEY...GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK UP!"
I spotted this rather terrifying paragraph in the Wall Street journal, as part of their coverage of private aviation following the death of New York Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle:

"Over the years, there have been numerous examples of newly-minted pilots crashing near their own homes. Why? They get a license, get in a plane and start flying circles over the homestead, to let everyone know of their accomplishment. Then, while focusing too much on the house, they lose control of their plane and crash."

BACK TO THE NEWS...
We wish you all a good weekend. We sure hope you can join us tonight for the Friday edition of our broadcast.

Re: Remains discovered at 9/11 site

If a discovered wallet is the "only thing they have to remember them by...", then what does that say about the deceased? Sorry, I stand by my comments. It's time to let go and cherish the memories of the life of their loved one, and in this case, quit giving the government hell for what was pretty much an impossible job to start with.

To the anonymous poster who said 9/11 families should "let it go"--maybe you'd feel differently if you lost someone on 9/11. Perhaps the family member's found wallet is the only thing they have to remember them by...

Considering the unbearable loss of lives in Iraq, the politicking that goes on during this time of elections is disgusting. If these leaders had family members over fighting in Iraq, I doubt they'd be carrying on such a ridiculous circus act. In fact, if these politicians had loved ones in the armed forces, there would be no "Iraq War" because it never would have happened. Its ok to expend American lives as long as it doesn’t affect the political leaders’ families personally. And its ok to run ads that exploit the situation as long as it may get them a few votes. Isn’t that just horribly sinister? Isn’t it sad that they are so detached from their hearts that their elections are more important to them than human lives, families torn apart: little children without mothers and fathers, mothers and fathers losing children, husbands without wives, wives losing husbands, brothers and sisters never to meet again, grandparents seeing their off-spring leave this world before they do…

I am ashamed of the way we tried to take over another country before our own country was stable. The way we have tried to cram our way of life down the throats of people so different from us and not understanding it is their country the same as America is ours. We would not allow another country to come in here and tell us how they wanted us to be. Not without a battle and that is what the countries in the Middle East are trying to tell this administration, that they are willing to die to do that just as we would.
I get so sick of hearing the words, terrorist, terrior, fear factor coming from this president, the smirk on his face as he preaches to us as though we as citizens of this country do not have a brain in our heads and can not possibly think on our own.
We can show him and his administraion that we can still decide who will run this country the way we say. This is not a dictatorship and he is not King. Ballots will make the difference, and he will be a lame duck president for the next long two years. VOTE on Nov 7, show him he works for us not the other way around.

Your nightly "good News" reports are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for reminding us that everything is not "bad" in our world and there will always be good news if we keep our hearts and minds open.

Great show Brian you got so much information in as it's only one half hour good job. Thanks for the honest up date on what's happening in Iraq we need to know. Brian I saw PBS Frontline and I pray no other families with a child in the military sees it. I also hope none of the families that lost a love one in the invasion sees that show. Iraq was mess up from the beginning our troops followed leaders with no understanding of what they were doing. As for Bush well he was right he didn't know what he was doing he just said yes. Cheney had the profiteers to work with and left the invasion to Bremmer/Rummy. Yes Powell was out of the loop. We lost the war the day we invaded Iraq and it's been down hill from there. I cried when I heard how unprepared and foolish guessing that took place as our troops were being killed because our government created hatred in the mines and hearts of the Iraq people. These idiots planned to take over Iraq and order that country to be like America and gave them no say in the matter. Brian our government was worse then Saddam. When this is all over the US might be charged with crimes by the UN. The truth would hurt so many Americans who believed the lies and trusted the US government.

Brian
The game plan is working for the GOP. Put Americans in fear again by running Bin Ladin Ads. Bush always said " Stay the course", now for votes he's saying he's listening to the Generals. Iraq is worse now then when we invaded. Gas prices are going down just as President Bush's friend Bandar say it would. The GOP is pushing back the importance of the sex abuse and cover up in Congress. The Church is promised more money and passing religious bills to get votes. Our government is making deals and promises to everybody to get Republicans to still be able to steal and let our troops die. Now the only question is will Americans fall for the lies.

I'd just like to take a minute to commend you on your restraint as far as the new RNC spot goes. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Five years after 9/11, human remains are again being discovered and families of victims are upset, believing not enough has been done to recover body parts.

Hey families, 9/11 was tragic. Granted we all grieved, but of course those of you who lost loved ones suffered far worse than those of us who didn't.

But come on! What happened that day was beyond belief. When the authorities say they did their best, I believe them. Hundreds of bodies vanished without a trace, probably quite literally into thick air--they just aren't there, or anywhere, for that matter. Your demands are an insult to those who worked so hard to recover every piece they could.

So now a few pieces of human remains have been discovered five years later. How likely is it, even with a search that might last another fifty years, that hundreds more bodies could be unearthed or discovered? Face it, not one chance in a billion. Let it go. A newly discovered piece of bone, or a wallet isn't going to bring anybody back.

Really it's no different than when a loved one is killed in combat by an explosion or a bomb. Not every single piece can sometimes be recovered. And I've never heard of families expecting the impossible in those situations.

It's time to let it go.

Hey, we're divided into 50 separate states. Why does Bush think it would UNACCEPTABLE to divide Iraq into three states. If that's what they want. It's their country, isn't it?

It is an utter tragedy that more human remains were found at the WTC. It is an utter tragedy that bin Laden, the mastermind behind the WTC, is still alive. It is an even greater tragedy that the GOP is using bin Laden as a scare tactic to try to win votes in the upcoming elections. Had the President eliminated bin Laden in the first place the GOP would not be in the position they are in. So the greatest tragedy of all is that the President nor the GOP will ever admit to their mistakes, nor will they be man enough to correct them.

So human remains are still being found intact in NYC 5 years after 9/11--are they still being found in the ruined homes of New Orleans? I haven't heard anything about that lately...

I have watched the last three episodes of PBS's Frontline. The "Lost Year in Iraq" episode on Iraq as well as that of the "Tribal Areas", should be required viewing for all going to the polls next month. These videos are available for viewing on line.

A number of years ago, I was a regional sales manager for a national company. In the last year I was there, my "numbers" tanked and soon I was called on the carpet. Unable to recover the lost revenue, I was soon paid a visit by my superior who literally came into my office early one day and there and then, walked me out the door. Nothing personal, this was business.

We all know what happens when a football team loses too many games. The coach gets canned.

I do undertand that this has nothing to do with Washington, but it should. For some time I have felt that Rumsfeld should be replaced but as of today, I understand that it's the "team owner" who has the problem. I have recently read reports that have on occasion led me to believe that President Bush was receiving bad advice. I'm beginning to doubt that now given that he stated today that there will be no major change in our operations in Iraq. And this is before his video meeting with the guys on the ground!

Please have David Gregory ask Tony Snow why the Iraqis are going to wait until two days before the election to sentence Sadam. This has Rove written all over it.

Brian, it looks as if the President has done it again by picking NOW to talk about a change in policy in Iraq. If I didn't know better I would say it is quite the coincidence to come on the heels of the elections. So many of our soldiers have died and now you want to discuss a change in policy? Not too political is it? Would it be too much to ask to actually do something for the betterment of our soldiers without the political crap that goes along with it? I detect a sense of fear coming from the Republican ranks. I am sad that my worst fears are coming true. I hope that people will really think twice this time as they cast their votes in November.
I know that I will.

President listening to generals... What a novel idea. Maybe NOT INVADING in the first place would have been a good start? I really do think it was and still is a deliberate attempt to cause divisions in the entire middle east by not securing the country and allowing such violence to begin with. In other words, they are not losing the war... It is going EXACTLY as they had HOPED.

Much like Bosnia, A division of Iraq into three separate states is the only way to go at this point. Aren't you going to be covering the taking of an entire city by militia group? The Tet offensive directly played out one of the most fundamental rules in the ancient book "The Art of War:" attack that what the enemy must hasten to defend!
