Saturday Fallout

John Seigenthaler will be back next weekend. I'll be sitting-in for him again tonight.

Last Saturday on this broadcast we were reporting the "day after" political reaction and fallout to the surprise resignation of Republican Congressman Mark Foley over inappropriate emails he sent to a former Congressional page.  It was clear even then that political battle lines were being drawn. Now, a week later, with more pages, more e-mails, and a flurry of political charges and corresponding damage control in high-gear, we are getting some hard data on just what all this may be costing the Republican party.  The headlines from a brand new Newsweek poll spell trouble for the GOP.  Tonight, now 31 days from the midterm election, NBC's Chip Reid will look at the issues that may be turning the course of this campaign late in the game, and how both parties’ are playing it.

Also, while October 7th may not be a date that stands out in the minds of most Americans, it marks one of the defining moments of our post 9/11 world. It was on this date in 2001, the United States led the invasion of Afghanistan.

It was a direct response to the September 11th attacks, and marked the "first shots" in the President's declared war on terror.  The war in Afghanistan has in many ways become the forgotten war, and doesn't get nearly the attention that the conflict in Iraq does.  That is in part because it has not been as costly to the U.S., but also because it is often thought of as the war that was fought and won.  In fact, the U.S. did quickly topple the ruling Taliban government, and severely damaged al-Qaida and its terror training infrastructure. But as Jim Miklaszewski will report tonight, total victory is proving elusive.  Just today in separate incidents, two freelance German journalists were killed in Afghanistan, as well as a NATO solider.  The latest victims of a rising wave of violence in the country. Tonight we'll look at where things stand five years after the war on terror began.

We're also covering the return of the evacuees after that huge chemical plant fire in North Carolina and the christening of the Navy's newest aircraft carrier that brought President's Bush 41 and 43 together in Virginia today.  But only one of them tonight can claim to be the ship's namesake.

I hope you can join us tonight for Nightly News.

Here's what's dumb, and sure to be blamed on the Democrats as soon as the dimensions of this idiocy are obvious: in order to meet recruitment goals, the Amry has lowered it's standards. Plain English: gang bangers and the very "dead-enders" Rumsfeld once smirked about are getting training in advanced weapons and tactics. NO WAY is that going to come back and bite us.

whats is up with the White House every time I watch
the news another person is doing wrong. and these
men are running our USA

guns,bombs,weapons,hatred,fear...all have failed to unite the world...imagine all the people sharing all the world...since war has not brought peace, maybe it is time to use words to compliment each others efforts and be the crown of creation...

Our troops are dying and the White House does nothing. Our kids are being abused by Congressman and no does anything. What has happen to our country and it values and morals. I hope the real religious Republicans stand up for our country and put honest people in office and kick this fake religious quacks out. Hastert made a choice between political power and the safety of our kids. So many lies and corruption as Americans what our troops die and our kids get abused. November will bring the change we need to clean up this mess. On elected official is above the law and he/she works for the people not self interest. No spin/blame/lies will work anymore we're seen the liars behind the mask.

Hey Lester,

I'm not sure most people are aware but it was reported that Al Quada members were eying chemical storage facilities as possible targets. Someone reported that men landed a small plane in their town and began asking what was in them. It's scary. I've heard that some of those chemicals are so deadly that they could kill 60,000 people if one of those super tanks were hit...

Yeah... Just what the Navy needs, another super carrier. Did you know that just like the B-2 bomber the pentagon itself did not even want such large carriers? They are highly vulnerable to a nuclear attack and don't cover as much ground as two smaller carriers, not that I'm complaining. We essentially build them as a jobs program. Our navy is 10 X stronger than that of the rest of the world combined; yet we keep on spending. No wonder everyone is so affraid of us. OUr military budgit is greater than that of the rest of the world COMBINED.

Probably even more dumb than building so many unnecessary carriers is how we've neglected to equip them properly. Here we are with these mega carriers and all we are flying off them is the F-18: a plane originally designed in 1966 by Northrop. The F-18 was a good planes in the world in the 80s and early 90s, but has long since outlived its intended purpose. Many scholars have argued that it would have been much wiser to build F-14s instead: a plane with far greater range. Dick Chaney is responcible for that decision.
