'Early Nightly' is up
Brian is in New York today, but a good portion of his thoughts -- along with those of many folks around the country -- are in Washington, where the fallout from the Mark Foley scandal continues. The big question: will Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert survive? Tonight's broadcast will have the latest news from Capitol Hill.
Also on tap for tonight's broadcast: more from our 'Homefront' series and a heartwarming story about Rose Kennedy and her knack for never throwing anything away, including thousands of letters between her and her children.

The Homefront installment tonight was both refreshing and poignant. It's clear to see that America's children don't have a political agenda, their notes and kind words to soliders in harms way
made be proud to be an American.

Brian,
The situation in Washington is such a disrupting factor to our society at the present time that I am truly led to believe that the Republicans are digging their own grave. I am not blaming every Republican for this issue, but it is quite disturbing to know that our lawmakers are going around and doing such things when there are more important objectives to be accomplished. It sickens me. I am not predicting anything, but I have the distinct sense that Democrats will reign supreme in Congress after these upcoming elections. I have a feeling that President Bush will have a hard time trying to get his way. I sense a future chock full of overridden vetoes. I am not making any specific criticisms here. As a newly registered Democrat, and voter for that matter, I feel we are moving away from what our legislative and executive branches really should be focused upon. I really am sorry we cannot return to such an Americanized way of life.

I do hope that somewhere in the coverage of this scandal, as more and more revelations come out about Foley's sexual orientation, that it is made implicitly clear that pedophilia and homosexuality are by no means the same thing. It does not seem right that the allegations against Foley suddenly reveal him as a "homosexual". The symptoms of his behavior are not that of an innocent gay man revealing his true self. They are of something far more depraved and inappropriate. It alarms me that those who fear homosexuals may use this incident as another platform to rally against them, using the argument that they are dangerous to children simply because they are gay. Let's draw a clear and concise line between sexual preference and sexual deviance.

Let me make sure I have this correct - that another overpaid, "memory lapsing", talk out of both sides of his mouth politician possibly getting the heave ho is the most important news story of the day? Come on folks get serious, it's not even close to being the most important story. Maybe, just maybe one day those inside the DC beltway and the media might "get it" that these politicians are not as important as they make themselves out to be.
Once again with the "scandal du jour" the politicians have missed the big picture that children, our own children, have been the victims of abuse.
Were I a constituent of Speaker Hastert I would be far more concerned with having a representative who cannot remember who told him what when. A failing (convenient) memory and he thinks he should be re-elected and put in a position of power? Hopefully his constituents will give him a loud clear answer on that issue. Of course I hope that's true for a lot of politicians in this election season from both sides of the aisle.

I want to let you know how glad I am to see Richard Engel, your Middle East Bureau Chief, back on the beat in Bagdad...not that I like to see such a fine reporter in harm's way, but because he brings a clarity and understanding to the utter chaos of Iraq.
Keep him safe but keep him there.

The Foley scandal continues to dominate the news and we continue to hear about shifting blame and excuses for this horrible behavior. And of course we forget that there were victims in all of this. These men who had any knowledge of this behavior by Foley or anyone else in such high-power positions should be ashamed of themselves for not protecting the victims and speaking out to stop this. Instead just blame everyone else or claim ignorance. Shame on all of them. And of course this shifts national focus from the other important events that are affecting us. I will be watching Brian tonight to catch up on the latest chapter.

These Elected officials are shame full and a disgrace to the Republican voters they serve. To blame the children for Foley's actions is the lowest. After using religious values/morals to put themselves in office only to have Hooker gate sex parties, abusing children, wasting taxpayers money, laying about Iraq and so much more I pray for all of them. I really hope God can forgive their many sins. But our country needs new leaders to give honesty and respect to the United States of America. This country has be seriously damaged by this Republican group and the few Republicans that aren't in the group are damaged too. It's time Americans look closer at the leaders that represent their States. The fixed machines and tricks Karl Rove has used to put corrupt people in office have to stop now. I even heard about Katie Couric's news report spinning this horror case but I wasn't surprised as she has been playing the spin/blame/lie games for the GOP for 5 years so nothings new. I did expect more from her in this Foley matter as she is a mother but I guess politics comes first.
