The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Dramatic Day

This has been a busy and dramatic day at the United Nations in New York.  The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed sanctions against North Korea as punishment for its claimed nuclear test.   What will the sanctions mean for North Korea and how will the country's leader Kim Jung Il react?  Those are just some of the questions we will examine tonight.  NBC's Rosiland Jordan will have the latest ... with reaction from President Bush.

Also tonight, disturbing new figures out this week show crime is on the rise here in the U.S.  NBC's Pete Williams has that story.

NBC's Jane Arraf brings us the view of the Iraqi Army... from the inside.  She was embedded with an Iraqi unit for 2 days and brings us the story of a raid the unit launched against insurgents.

We will also show you the new U.S. Air Force memorial in Washington where dedication ceremonies were held today.

And NBC's George Lewis will bring us a disturbing new study that suggests a large percentage of teenagers in this country are cheating on school tests... and believe that they need to lie and cheat in order to get ahead.

It's all coming up tonight.  We hope you'll join us.

No one is even asking the right question: Why is it o.k. for the United States to own nuclear weapons (and test them), and no other countries have the same right? Our arrogance never ceases to amaze me.

When are we going to stop blaming others for our own problems. What I mean is, how can we blame Busch for the actions of others? How can we blame anyone for our own actions? That is the problem with our country today. We are always trying to find someone else to blame for the moronic things that we do. This includes Republicans and Democrats alike. Our kids are killing other kids in schools because we as parents have given up our responsibility as parents. The crimes that people commit are not the fault of anyone else except for the person that commits it. They have to chose between right and wrong; noone forces them. STAND UP AMERICA AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CORRUPTION IN YOUR OWN HEARTS AND MAKE IT RIGHT FOR THE SAKE OF OUR FUTURE.

I agree with the people in Seattle and Seaside....missing out on the weekend Nightly News programs is not right, just because the advertising dollars from Nascar and the NFL are almighty.

1. U.N. sanctions did not work with Iraq nor will they work in countries whose leaders are not rational and filled with hatred and idealism. These are the kind of people who care less about diplomacy or chit chat.

2. Of course crime is up in this country. What do you expect when we've asked the only Person who can help us to get out of our lives, homes, schools, government and country, and He being tha perfect Gentleman that He is obliged. Ann Graham Lotz said something like that shortly after 9/11. I agree.
We've done it our way all this time and this is what you have to report, along with the political garbage as of late.
It's about time we gave God a try.

I believe kids see politicians and CEO's of major companies going off to prison for being less than truthful and dishonest, but believe they feel it is worth the risk of getting caught and is just part of being able "to play politics" in order to get ahead

Dear Mr. Seigenthaler,

We are glad that you blog over the weekend since we can not view your show on Sunday because of football. Last night (Saturday) there was a Nascar race during the time of your broadcast...so it looks as though your viewers out west won't get to see your program until next Saturday (for the one weekend nightly news). Is there a way for your program to be netcast the way Brian Williams' is during the week? This just is not fair to your viewers because we miss out on details discussed in your blog. Thank you.

John,
Glad to have you back in "the chair" although west coasters will not be viewing your broadcast this weekend due to Nascar this evening, and NFL Football tomorrow night. We have made many requests for Netcast of your weekend broadcasts...thus far to no avail. Will you please help? Best regards from the Emerald City!

The U.S. has lost credibility in the world. Before the test the Bush administration kept saying: We won't tolerate..., we won't allow..., there will be serious consequences if... etc.

After the N. Korean nuke test Bush backtracked and said that the UN will impose sanctions and the U.S. won't be taking the lead and that N. Korea should go back to the 6 party talks right away.

After all that bluster from Bush, nothing. The inactions just emboldens the enemy.

Rise in crime.

When Clinton got his 100,000 cops on the street program going the crime rate dropped. When Bush got into office and saw the crime numbers were falling he cut funding for the cops on the street program. Anyone else sees the connection?

School tests.

Corporate lies gets you billions in a golden parachute when you leave the company. Those who work 5 days a week plus overtime for 30 years sees their pension taken away to pay for the golden parachutes. Where's the incentive to be honest?
