American traitor?
For the first time in more than 50 years, federal prosecutors are preparing to charge an American citizen with treason. Barring any last-minute complications, the charges will be filed today against Adam Gadahn, the American who has appeared in at least four al-Qaida videos, the most recent one in September.
Treason is the only crime specified in the Constitution and requires either confession in open court or the testimony of at least two witnesses to get a conviction. Prosecutors believe with millions of witnesses to his videos, they have enough proof, but the decision will be controversial, given that so little is known about the circumstances of the videos.
Born Adam Pearlman in California and raised on a goat farm in Riverside Co., he converted to Islam in his late teens. His parents say he moved to Pakistan in 1998. In 2004, the FBI revealed that it believed he was one of a group of al-Qaida terrorists planning some kind of attack later that year. In October of 2004, calling himself "Azzam the American," he first showed up in an al-Qaida video.

If he was planning to attack Americans than he is guilty of conspiracy to commit a crime and he should face the consequences. But if his only "crime" is appearing in a video denouncing America, than he was practicing his Constitutional rights, the same rights that other Americans are fighting and dying to protect in Iraq and Afghanistan. If the Bush Administration wants to try him for treason for exercising his right to free speech, no matter how repugnant his views, than it is the administration that is guilty of treason by trying to destroy the personal freedoms that are at the very foundation of our great country.

So now we are going to charge with treason and possibly convict in absentia an american citizen who is currently living in another country, even though we don't know why he is participating in terrorist videos and could be doing so under duress.
That's pretty damn stupid. Its what I would expect from the Iatollah or Hitler, not the constitutionally assured bastion of individual freedom and liberty.

I think we should give him free room and board next door to Barbara Striesand, no Alec Baldwin, no better yet Martin Sheen, no........................

Actions speak louder than words. If Adam is found to have actioned in treason against this country then he should be punished. If all he did was talk or make threats, then we can not punish him anymore than we could any other American for speaking out against their government. Freedom of Speech.

so he appeared in a video...and he's islamic now...so what? was there an attack in sept?? no! unless he physically aided terrorists in an attack against america or they have evidence that he WILL attack america, this has nothing to do with treason, it's more about a witch hunt (like the previous post said).

To the "witch hunt guy" above. I guess you'd call going after Bin Laden a witch hunt as well?
I can't imagine how you came to that conclusion using the founding of the USA "by traitors?" to justify your argument. I'm astounded frankly.

I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I am not a Bush supporter or hater. If they prove this guy is collaborating with al-Qaida, that's doing a lot more than sharing different political views or religious beliefs. Much of Al-Qaida is working to destroy the American way of life and kill our citizens regardless of our own beliefs. (If you believe otherwise, you need to really educate yourself.) If he supports it, try him and sentence as you would any other traitor.

Actions speak louder than words, and if it can be proven that Adam assisted in any attacks made against our country or against any Americans, then he should be punished. But if all he did was talk on a video about committing these acts and then never followed through, then we cannot punish him anymore than you could punish any other American for speaking out against their government. Freedom of speech.

He is taking up arms against his country. He is guilty of treason.

It's about time some action was done regarding those who would undermine and try to destroy America. We are at war with Islam, not of our choosing but one imposed not only on the U.S. but the world. Hiding the threat only increases the threat, pacifying the idea is only a liberal socialist view and needs to be condemned also. America needs to take stronger action, quickly and decisive. Reveal the threat to the people of America in a real correct manner, in other words "tell the truth" without the fear of what might be said or the threats given. In God We Trust

this guy is the poster boy for treason...........

John Murtha is guilty or treason??? Why, because he has a different opinion than our brilliant commander in chief? I think there is some confusion between treason and fascism....

"...decision will be controversial, given that so little is known about the circumstances of the videos"
Geesh. Give the man his day in court before you have him hanging. Maybe he went over to Wackistan to find God (cult) and has been forced to make these videos. Or maybe he got kicked in the head on his parent's goat farm and he thinks he is super spy Goatman infiltrating the evil doers. Or maybe is simply is a scumbag traitor. The point is, you know nothing other than what the media has told you. Give the man his day in court your prejudice pricks.

Desent is the highest form of Patriotism. When we can no longer question our leaders without reprisal, we will be living in a Fascist State vice a Democracy, which is what I served in the military for 20 years to protect. To lump a highly decorated veteran, into the likes of a real traitor is shameful. (Ken, how long did you serve in the military?)
(Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:14:12 PM)
Yes, it is time that we stop those who are treasonous. This cannot be allowed to continue. Instead of killing upon conviction I would prefer to have a citizenship cancellation instead. A man without a home (nation) is no man at all.
Max Lawson Pahala Hawai`i (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:14:09 PM)
He should have stuck to goat farming. At least it's not as life threatening as a charge of treason. I agree that he should be prosecuted under the treason law in the Constitution, convicted and shot by a firing squad publicly.
Drew, Ogallala Nebraska (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:14:03 PM)
It is about time...And for all of those who call themselves journalists, who "leak" classified information and "uncover" government secrets and reveal them to the American people AND THE ENEMY, theirs should be the next on the list under the indictment
Brad D, Winnie, TX (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:13:42 PM)
There is a fine line between and American's right to free speech and treason, this guy crossed that line and deserves what he gets. As Americans though we should strive to be better than our enemies and any kind of public execution would make us no better then them.
Richard Renteria, Huntington Beach, CA (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:12:48 PM)
Our country was created by Traitors who commited treason. I find is scary in this day an age that an American can be charged with treason for having a different and unpopular political and religious belief. Unless they prove he physically caused damage to the U.S. and it's citizens, this is nothing less than a witch hunt.
Stephen Marr, Denver, Co (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:09:43 PM)
It's about time. The definition of treason is the providing of aid and comfort to the enemy. This guy has appeared in videos promoting the destruction of America. This is the purest form of treason in my opinion. If they capture him he should be hanged in public to prove that we mean business. I personally think that their are many other people in this country that have committed more overt forms of treason since 9/11 but it is much harder to stop the NY times, LA times, John Murtha and those people who will release or print anything to help their cause whether or not it will hurt our country.
Ken C. Red Oak, TX (Sent Oct 11, 2006 1:06:41 PM)
Finally!!! Its about time we started to do what was necessary to these evil people regardless of their citizenship!! I see no controversy - try him and then hang him!!
