Al-Qaida Tape
Good day. John Seigenthaler has the night off and I'll be sitting-in for him.
On this evening's broadcast we’ll examine the tape that emerged today of 9/11 ringleader Mohammad Atta. On it we see Atta and another hijacker, as well as Osama bin Laden. Beyond the disturbing fact that we see Atta offering his will and preparing for the attacks, the timing of the tape is significant. It was shot 20 months before the attacks. Lisa Myers will report tonight on what new light this tape may be shedding on our understanding of the plot.
We're also following developments in the e-mail scandal involving now former Representative Mark Foley. Democrats are suggesting a cover-up. This is beginning to look like a brewing political storm and we will have a full report on the questions being asked tonight.
That spinach E. coli scare has apparently sparked increasing interest in those farmer's markets that have popped up in many cities in towns. Our Rehema Ellis took a trip to one such market to find out why.
And yes, by now you've probably seen it on the Internet. But we will be closing the broadcast tonight with a clip from Brian William's surprise appearance at the "Weekend Update" desk on Saturday Night Live last night. Brian showed both grace and, if I may say, brilliant comic timing. But as Brian told Seth Meyers in last night's skit... "don't patronize me," and so I’ll let you be the judge as to how he did.
Hope you'll join us tonight.

Kind of suprised to see Mohammand Atta's name being out in the Open again! Would be even more suprised if it would be out in the open where he was from 86-93, Why he was where he was and How he Got Out??

Have you ever noticed how the various tapes of Osama Bin Laden show that his beard varies in colour ie. a lot of grey to a little grey, almost black in reverse order to his time line videos. Would not be hard to patch in old voice tapes. I think Osama "met his waterloo" when the US bombed the hell out of Bora Bora. With digital technology you believe nothing of what you read or hear and very little of what you see.

Lester I saw Brian's short visit to SNL he was great. Now you see why people like him so much he can laugh at himself and have fun. Brian could play the adult Harry Potter.
Now as for the news of the day. It's sad that we have elected officials who are child sex offenders while hidiing their acts under religious values and morals. Foley isn't gay he's a child sex offender it's a big difference. Those who covered up his acts should be removed from office. More children are coming forward as this goes back to 2001.

Spinach E. Coli Scare:
It's horrific to think how little we rely on ourselves anymore. Most people don't even have gardens these days. If we grew our own vegetables and made our own clothing (which in not only NOT hard to do but gives us a better product) we wouldn't be so dependant on illegal immigrants and sweat shops in China to make or grow these things for us. When we make things for ourselves, we achieve much better quality and have the pride of a craftsman, too!
Has anyone heard about edible *wild* plants? In my area (central PA) you can't walk more than 200 yards without running across 30 or 40 different kinds. Many were honest-to-goodness vegetables brought over from Europe by settlers and they now grow wild all over the country. Most people call them weeds but they are very healthy: "Natural Spinach!"
There are many field guides to help you properly identify them. The Peterson's Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants is one of the best (as well as one by Bradford Angier)! Such wild edibles (..and we are not talking about confusing mushrooms) can be very mild tasting, even when eaten raw. Since we can pick them and eat them within hours - not days - we gain more nutritional value because the minerals of the plant have not had time to dissolve. Trust me, it doesn't take long to learn on your own and Peterson points out all poisonous plants which are not that many. Silver maple leaves (though not my favorite) are one I've always like to eat that most people would be familiar with. Since maple sap in 40 to 1 water to syrup, it can also be considered an emergency water source!
If you're a hiker, just knowing a few wild edibles can hold you over until your next pizza shop visit: plantain, lambs quarter, amaranth, purslane, evening primrose... all but one of them are growing naturally in my back yard right now - they are that prolific!
Just save room for the Pizza!
