WILD WEDNESDAY
So many stories swirling around in the mix, and yet not a lock for the lead among them. This day will go down to the wire. We have reporting from the White House (on several fronts) on health (trans fats and the news made here in New York on that topic today) and much more. This is something of a rushed posting today as I'm just in from North Carolina, where I spent the first part of the day taping a segment that will air tomorrow night.
QUOTES OF THE DAY
"I'm just trying to clarify any of the rumors that's out there about me trying to have a suicide attempt..."
- TERRELL OWENS OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS
"Terrell has 25 million reasons why he should be alive."
- KIM ETHEREDGE, TERRELL OWENS' PUBLICIST (did you all get the reference to his salary?)
And with that began the short news conference that explained (or attempted to) the most talked-about story in the sports world -- the rumored/misreported suicide attempt by a Dallas Cowboy. He says that while he might have mixed medications and supplements and pain killers, he didn't try to kill himself. He later thanked the city of Dallas' Emergency Services. Glad that's resolved.
As I write this, WNBC-TV is breaking a major local political story, which we will keep an eye on in terms of impact and national scope. It's worth reading for its reporting and content.
We still have a few pieces to put in the right places, but it's early yet! We hope you will join us for tonight's broadcast.

Brian Williams is a second rate journalist. Your story on Toyko Rose was such a whitewash. And you won't even post criticisms on this blog.

Carol and Olivia are right - George Bush decides who has rights and who doesn't, and the MSM treats it like business as usual?
Such a curse George Bush is on our instruments of democracy, such a disgrace our rubber stamp Roman Senate is, and such pathetic job MSM does of exposing it. Are you all on the payroll?

Brian, you're the journalist here, maybe you can explain something to me that I don't understand about "freedom of the press". In examples such as the outing of Valerie Plame, the annonymous source revealing the classified findings of the NIE report and the recent release of sealed documents of the candidate from new york, why is the person who leaked the material to a member of the press the only person who is liable for criminal charges? Armitage may have informed Novak about Plame, but Novak told the world even though he knew it may have ruined her career as an operative or worse, put her life in danger. Annonymous sources leaking classified, sensative material only tell the media person they contact. I assume that the person from the media knows it's classified material that was not meant for open publication, either for national security reasons or a need to know basis. Why aren't they prosecuted for revealing the classified material? They are the ones who in all actuality let the cat out of the bag. In the New York case, you can't tell me the reporter didn't know that the information being printed was sealed by the courts and protected and the release of that type of information is a felony. Why aren't the reporters who actually make the information known to the public considered accessories a liable for prosecution? I understand the need for whistle blowers when a wrong has been committed, but when it's put out there because it "makes good copy" or is just sensational news, I think the line has been crosssed. I understand that alot of people will want to respond to this, but I want your input on this Brian, not the armchair reporters and bloggers who don't actually make their living reporting the news.

Brian,
Your lead tonight should be "September 28, 2006. The death of American Democracy." This abomination of a bill passed by congress to grant judicial power to the President should be an embarassment to all of our elected representatives. How can they face their children or any of their constituents?

Brian, visit to North Carolina? Great! I am sure you loved it! Come again. Can't wait to see the segment. I am sure it will be great as usual...NBC is the best place to find the news! Congrats on the Emmy!

I'm with Carol in California--last night's in-depth story shouldn't have been about trans fat when there are so many more important things going on.
However, regarding trans fat--whatever happened to personal responsibility? Maybe restaurants could note on their menus if anything contains trans fats so those who wish to avoid them can do so, but this should be VOLUNTARY, not legislated.

Congratulations on the Emmy - your broadcast certainly deserved it.
I would, however, like to comment on the political climate. It seems to me that the politicians are all bickering like grade schoolers. Congress authorized the use of force to combat terror as well as remove Saddam Hussein from power.
Terrorists inflicted the merciless deaths of 2,973 innocents on Sept. 11, 2001. So, now we are to give them rights? Sorry, but they deserve nothing. They would murder all of us and they don't care whether you support President Bush or not (I don't think they will ask before they kill). These are cold-blooded, murderous thugs who seek to destroy us and our way of life.
I say let them have a trial in front of the military tribunal, convict them & execute them all before they are released and do that to us (without a trial).
I am tired of my taxes feeding, clothing & housing these animals. (I apologize for insulting the animals of the world at least they kill mercifully).

all this bickering going on ,from the Pres. of Iran , Pres. Chavez, and Former Pres. Clinton, it sounds like fourth grade boys in the school playground. Women should be in charge, as we would have civil dicussions , tea parties and when all else fails, we would go shopping. Men take things so seriously. The pres. of Iran should be given his own talk show for his fifteen minutes of fame.

Brian I'm so tired of the spin and blame I'm just going to shut down and vote. Oh congrats to David Gregory I read Oprah's book she was right. Oh and Patrick J. Fitzgerald made it on the list too. I'm to old to get to excited but it was nice to see faces I like and know.
Once the new elected officials are in lets hope they can work together to clean up the mess we have.

Interesting, NBC usually does such a fine job covering events in Washington D.C., but today it seems Congress passed a bill to suspend the Constitution and endorse torture and yet, the in depth story is on transfat... truly shocking and enormously discouraging.
An interview with Mr. Jonathan Turley of Georgetown explaining this bill (and what the Senate is currently arguing about), would seem like an appropriate task for the 4th Estate.

I'm very happy that Brian won an Emmy. He sure deserved it.
Last night's fact check on the current uproar about Bill Clinton was excellent . Other networks focused on the sleazy, editing up tape to make it look like nothing more than Clinton exploding. NBC was the only network to look at the substance of what Clinton said.
Great show tonight too. I hope many more awards come to NBC News.

If the nation is going to focus on trans fats and its elimination....one should start with the school system and improving the lunches and snacks it serves. We are doing our youth an diservice with the unhealthy foods we serve.

Good old-fashioned enterprise reporting. Good job WNBC. I remember when local newspapers did that kind of work.

I'm very happy Terrell is alright! All the best my man!
Brian, I very much disagree with the general premise (which we’ve all heard) that having money makes life so enjoyable and grand. Some of the happiest people and children in the world are the most poor by any western standard. We incorrectly equate money with happiness and get a false impression that it makes one less susceptible to such a crisis. It is often times the people who outwardly appear to be “the most successful” that lose their will to even take their next breath. MONEY ANT EVERYTHING! One of the three main threads present in all three of the world's main religions is a decided need for a PURPOSE BEYOND ONES SELF! We honestly need to feel like we are helping. That is our nature! The other two are the need for a daily practice and a lifestyle without all the frills of EXESS.
While Americans send their kids happily off to daycare and place many on mood enhancing drugs, the children in the most poor nations just go out to play and PLAY indeed! Our hustle and bustle lifestyle has taken its toll. Look at how hateful people are over other religions and even traffic these days. We are killing ourselves and our world to boot! Western technology can make our lives so grand if we were to just relax and not be in such a battle to outclass the Jones’ next door. We live our lives more to impress others than to actually get more out of life. What is wrong with that picture?

Brian - Interesting story about Jeanne Pirro. I wonder if she and Hillary ever get together and compare notes????
