We have just returned from an extensive interview with the president of Iran. We are right now slamming together the various components of sound... the various "best-of" questions and answers that will air tonight in the broadcast, on topics ranging from the Pope to President Bush to nuclear weapons. We conducted the interview at his hotel in Midtown Manhattan, surrounded by members of his delegation, his sizable security detail and the U.S. Secret Service agents who are responsible for his safety while he's on American soil. It was a fascinating conversation with a hugely controversial world figure... and while these events are not without their frustrations (his more outlandish comments beg follow-up questions at the rate of one every 10 seconds, and yet we had to cover a lot of ground, which limited our ability to drill down), I think our viewers will learn a lot about him and his beliefs by watching and hearing his answers.

In addition to President Bush's speech to the U.N. today, we also saw a military coup in Thailand, there is space shuttle news (a delayed arrival back home) to report, and much more.

Off I go to wade into the transcript of our interview and look at our options for tonight. The interview (beyond the portion we air tonight) will shortly be available in a number of forms and on our various cable/Internet platforms.

We have a lot to do before airtime tonight, and we certainly hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast.

YOU GIVE MORE TIME TO OUR CRITICS THAN TO OUR OFFICIALS. YPU ARE THE REASON WE ARE NOT UNITED.

Traitors! You give the utmost respect and deference to a man who demands the death of an entire nation while crapping on your own president every chance you get. The man in the tan jacket is merely employing the accepted islamic practice of decieving one's enemies for the furthering of islam, (Taqiyya). As Americans, we all want peace. But by embracing this man you are fulfilling Kruschev's prediction; "eager for peace, the west will rejoice in it's own destruction"

I am very disappointed that NBC provided a forum for the President of Iran to criticize our country and out President. Taking advantage of our democracy and our free speech rights when in his own country that is not allowed........if our President did not want to meet with him - our media/press should not have given him the time to spread his propaganda.....shame on NBC

The best thing the media can possibly do for this country is to provide exposure so people can make up their own minds. How can it be bad for us to see and hear the Iranian president? What are people afraid of? That he will somehow persuade us to become radical Muslim extremists? That's silly. That he will make us think? That he will reveal himself to be part madman and part reasonable thinker? Being patriotic means being free to listen, free to learn and willing to defend what's best about our country. Have we come to a point in our history where we are afraid to listen to our ememies? We cannot defeat them by becoming like them. Let them be the ones who limit free speech. Let us be the ones who encourage it...even when we don't like it.

How can you tell Ahmadinejad is lying?

When he opens his mouth.

Ever since the US assumed the role Imperial Britain had played before World War II, it has attempted through political manipulation and military force to keep the oil flowing from the Middle East. In the case of Iran that meant overthrowing a government by means of a CIA coup d'etat and installing the Shah. A similar story can be told for each important Mid East country.Fifty years later we find ourselves univerally hated and bloodied by the terorism our own policy ignited. We need to start listening and learning from our opponents. We need to end our gluttonous SUV-McMansion-Sprawl lifestyle and end our dependence on foreign oil. We need to end all political manipulation and militay intervention in the Middle East. Unless we end the ignorance and arrogance at the heart of our foreign policy we will see only more war, more terrorism, and more hatred of us.

Dear Brian,
Your interview with the President of Iran was compelling and fascinating. Even though I am sure he was on his "best behavior" for his American audience, it did give us an opportunity to get an up close look at someone we've heard only negative things about. He has not quelled any apprehension I have about him, but I do believe it is important to hear what he has to say. I feel that President Bush missed a perfect opportunity to at least meet the President of Iran in person. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad mentioned how he wrote a letter to President Bush and didn't receive an answer. What would it have hurt to at least acknowledge his letter in a formal manner. When you asked him what he would say to President Bush if he were sitting in your chair, he said it would be better if President Bush were sitting there across from him. Who knows, if President Bush made an overture to at least meet the man, look him in the eye, and shake his hand while at the UN, it could have been a moment that could have opened a good dialogue between them at a future time. I don't care who you are - everyone just wants to be acknowledged. How would President Bush have felt if the situation were reversed? Probably indignant. When he refused to speak to Cindy Sheehan when she first appeared outside of the ranch in Crawford, I thought to myself - big mistake. I could see that his refusal to speak to her would be a spark to an anti-war movement in this country. And look what happened. In this case, being too stubborn (or whatever) not to at least acknowledge Mahmoud Ahmadinejad certainly will not help moving forward in a positive direction.

For those who are tired of watching the reporters being a pest to their guests by demanding only what they want to hear from them, your interview of Iranian President Ahmadinejad was refreshing. Your invitation to him to address the American people and the President has given him an opportunity to express his opinion. I feel this is what can be true journalism. I command you for this interview.

The President of Iran doesn't sound that crazy to me. In fact, he sounds pretty reasonable, especially considering the last time he was interviewed by an American reporter he was actually interrogated.

I don't doubt they're working on a bomb - they'd be nuts not to, after being fingered as a member of the AXIS OF EVIL!! and seeing the fates of the other two member states of the AXIS OF EVIL!! - the weak one got invaded and destroyed while the armed one igets some respect. Any American that thinks the Iraians are too stupid to notice this listen to Bush far too much.

What I can't fugure out is why Mutually Assured Destruction - or in this case, you get turned into glass - isn't functionable any more. Having nukes is one thing, using them is another, especially when you know you'll be wiped off the face of the Earth.

George Bush ignoring a head of state just highlights how unsuited he is for his office. It's probably all that talk about "facts" and "truth" that puts him off.

How long will we keep blinders on to the big picture here? When a man such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad makes statements of extreme violence against the Western World and Israel in the safety of his own country - when he believes the world is not listening - yet espouses peace and brotherly love when given a global platform on American soil, you have a choice to make - in which forum is Mr. Ahmadinejad more likely to express his true agenda? I believe we have a final opportunity to build an alliance for peace amongst our allies and we need to fight for it tooth and nail. If the alliance fails, America will be left with no choice - as unfortunate and painful as it may be - to enter a mode of self preservation against those who would see the end of Western Civilization.

It is unbelievable that NBC would give air time on a high profile program. People will actually think the Irianian president is a rational man speaking of peace. He is lying ...but unfortunately, many Americans who are ignorant of the facts, will think he's the good guy and President Bush is the bad guy.
Haven't you seen the video with the Iranian President before a crowd that was cheering "Death to America" and "Death to Isreal." Do really think he was going to come to America and speak his true feelings. Also, the fundamentalists believe it is okay to lie as long as it serves Islam. Once again..the US media demonstrates that is it more concerned about ratings than it is about its own country.

Why are you so soft of this dicator, Ahmadinejad. He has vowed to remove Jews from this world. He has threatened the United States. What is wrong with you? This doesn't get you upset? You give more respect to one who fully supports terrorist than you give your own President.

Thank you for giving the president of Iran time to answer all the senseless and inflammatory "news bites" given to us continually by most of the American media. Just as with the pope's unfortunate speech, the media creates half the problems in this world with their selective cut and paste reporting. Much of what Ahmadinejad said in this interview is perfectly rational and unfortunately much more intelligent and thoughtful than anything we ever hear from our own president. He is really trying to get the American public to understand where he is coming from, the things that historically the West has done to create the awful situation in the Middle East. The American people are woefully historically uninformed, and sadly nothing we hear in the hawkish spin generated by the White House and most of the media will amend the situation. Yes, Ahmadinejad is dangerous to us, but only because of the things WE have done in the past and are doing now. Any one of us in his situation would want to arm ourselves.

The Iranian President is correct, the mideast region takes care of themselves;there was no need for American troops to invade Iraq. There has been alot more deaths due to the unneccary war with Iraq. The Mideast was a more controlled region when Saddam was president, look at it now since George Bush wanted to take over.

Thank you Brian for giving this man a chance to speak. After listening to Mr. Bush's crazy, and foundless ramblings and irrational statements that fly in the face of all evidence, I find it hard to understand why you feel Mr. Ahmadinejad's comments are outrageous. What I heard Mr. Ahmadinejad saying is a call to peaceful dialog. Am I missing something?

Brian - Hitler would have been agreat interview, too! Which part of this Iranian terrorist's remarks at the UN "America will soon feel the FIRE of Islam's rage" don't you and the rest of the liberal news media get?

This guy sat there laughing at you and NBC while he schemes to nuke America and Israel. Wake up!!! He led the capture of the American Embassy and holding our hostages for a year in 1979. Remember?

The interview was done quite well. I think that our president should meet with him if he is so big on peace. our president had not done his job for this country and our people. If President Bush is one for peace, then he needs to step up and meet with the iranian leader. But again our President supported irasel in attacking a country (lebenon) Killing many innocent lives i dont endorse the kidnapping of a soilder but, there was better ways to handle it..That country had just gotten on its feet.. I give credit to the iranian leader to send out a letter and at least attempt to try and do things right. Our President should try that before making things up to get his wars....

i can't believe people are suggesting we should not even listen to what the iranian president has to say. so to those saying that, is your normal reaction to someone you disagree with to close your ears and walk away? this iranian president may have controversial opinions but he has not (yet!) taken any actions. we SHOULD be engaging in a dialog with him.
ignorance is once thing, but willing ignorance? shame on the people who are suggesting such a thing. if you don't want to be bothered to learn something new, just continue to tune out completely and turn off the news. let those of us who want to expand our understanding of the world continue to do so unheeded.

Brian, I have noticed something when you are interviewing people on the broadcast- failure to maintain eye contact. You glance briefly at the interviewee from time to time, but mostly look down. In this situation especially you should have "looked this devil in the eye". Politicians will always ignor a question they don't like and take the opportunity to answer a question with a statement of their own agenda. I suppose you could have called him on it, but he probably would have ignored that, too. I saw enough to make my own judgement.

well done mr.brian.
after all president of iran spoke logicly , and very
sense making aswers to all of the questions you
asked. He is quite smarter then our president.

Thank you Brian for this great dialogue with the Iran's president. I wish that our president was as open. Obviously he wants to talk and have dialogue with us.
Thanks again
Nancy

Shame on you NBC and Brian Williams

Providing a forum for this madman who wants to destroy each and everyone of us.

Purposely undermining the policies of our government and our elected President who feel it is in our countries best interest to ignore and not provide a public forum for this supporter of Terrorism, Nuclear Proliferation, and denier of the Holocaust.

I thought it was in bad taste and a stab at our current government to broadcast from Cuba and report the conference of our countries admitted enemies. This takes your slanted Liberal, Anti-Bush agenda to another level.

Shame on you NBC and Brian Williams for selling yourself out for ratings against the safety and security of our country and it's brave soldiers trying to protect us.

You have reached a new low.

Former Vietnam Vet

The president of Iran is portrayed as the future of the world. Oh if only news people loved the US a little more than than they hate George W Bush

GOOD JOB MR WILLIAMS OUR PRESIDENT NEEDS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE LIVES

Do we as Americans not have any say in the path our government is choosing? We spent a great deal of time trying to impeach an otherwise effective president because of ethical discrepancies. But, now we have a man that speaks little sense driving the entire world closer and closer to its demise.

I've never been fearful for the liberty of humanity until now. I see the news and I want to cry for the contagious instability spreading like wildfire.

Will my children and I be able to live in peace for the decades to come?

And then I see this interview with the Iranian president. I would like to shake his hand because in a sense, he offers me the comfort I wasn't sure anyone else could afford my family at this point.

I hope he is genuine in his affection for the good of American people. On some days I have a hard time seeing those around me and finding the good in them. But, he has encouraged me to stretch myself further to find that very essence as it likely is there somewhere.

Thank you for the interview. May this serve Americans well now and in the prospects for a peaceful future.

Many thanks to President Ahmadinejad for taking the time for this interview. A man of his intellect and regard would be welcome in my home anytime.
