NOT-SO UNITED NATIONS

Those of us who have to deal with New York City traffic every day will be anxious to see the end of the gathering at the U.N. It occurred to me today that the Bush Administration will be equally anxious to see it end, for reasons having nothing to do with traffic flow.

Another foreign leader used his visibility on this week's world stage to take a broad swing at President Bush today. It doesn't get much worse than calling the President "the devil," but Hugo Chavez of Venezuela did. We'll look at his speech and talk about what it means (especially when combined with the comments made to us by the Iranian President yesterday) tonight with David Gregory.

What a fascinating color photograph of President Bush on page one of most print editions of today's New York Times [link requires NYTimes.com login]. If you look closely, you can see what the President does to his prepared remarks... going over them with his Sharpie (his pen of choice) to emphasize and break up expressions. It appears that virtually every line is underlined, with breaks right where the President wants them for emphasis during delivery.

It has suddenly occurred to people who've filled up their tanks this week that gasoline prices are falling... rapidly. We'll look at what might be behind this development. Tonight there's also better news from NASA, a fascinating political story out of Virginia... and the e-mailers get equal time tonight. So many opinions, so little time...

Brian, I am very impressed by your (young American man) opinion about our World in this very critical dangerous time. I am Old Russian woman, born during war, growing after war; I have not only knowledge through reading about war, I have experience about. Everything what I learned in my childhood about dreadful Hitler’s Army I hear now from American “top” people: torturing, using dogs, massive killing of people, who are trapped in their countries. Our Planet is dying, kings never respected Life, they never respected us, simple people, who keep the Life alive under bombing us, under genocide one after another nations. What will people after us get? I only want that people in 3000 will have Beautiful Planet with only knowledge of wars from historical books. I send you a few my thoughts:

HEROES and TERRORISTS
If you are lucky, got killed by killing others, on my side we call you Heroes. Others call you Terrorists and celebrate your death.
And GOD is crying – His children can not find the same language.
Stop killing each other.
Stop kill US. US - PEOPLE of The World. US who feed you, who dress you, who treat you, who build homes for you, who teach your children to discover the World, who try to keep THE LIFE ALIVE under your bombing US for thousands years.
HEROES and TERRORISTS (or whatever you call yourselves or others call you)
For PEOPLE in 3000 doesn't matter who was who before THEM. Only matters for THEM what will be left for THEM: Beautiful Blue Planet full of blooming flowers or skeletons hugging rifles. Become real HEROES, join US, grow bread, grow flowers for US and for PEOPLE in 3000.
And never put US, simple people, to cross fire.
Only TRIAL, INTERNATIONAL TRIAL, will help us to learn about problems of our World.
Learn to talk with each other, not to kill.

I’ll send you more. Please, read, I write not for myself, but for PEOPLE after us.

We shouldn't be lulled into complacency by these falling gas prices. Anything, anywhere could launch them into the stratosphere again. It is time to get serious about alternative fuels NOW!!!

Brian Williams, you and your fellow journalist are doing a major injustice to your country and what it stands for while you embolden leaders from Iran and Venezuela by giving them any serious airtime or consideration. You ignore honesty and freedom while humoring these horrible examples of world leaders while blasting the US president. You guys don't hit these dictators with any hard questions and critiques and yet you constantly hit on our country's leaders time and time again. Shame on you and god help the US.

I just find it strangely coincidental that gas prices are so precipitously plunging right at the start of Election season. I know economists will espouse about supply, conservation, discovery of new fields etc. But really, would oil-producing nations and oil companies benefit more from a Republican Administration or a Democrat Administration? Hmmm...I wonder...?

Some will say that the "driving" season is over, and that is why things are dropping. I pulled up gas price history since 1975, and that doesn't hold water. Typically, the dip occurs around November, after elections (except in election years where accomodating administrations are against the ropes). Just something for all of you to investigate for yourselves.

Concerning all the theater at the U.N. conference these past few days (and it was THEATER). I find it very strange that our President raked Syria over the coals for its human rights record when our government with the help of Canada sent a "sustpected" terrorist to Syria shere he was tortured. Turns out the poor guy wasn't a terrorist. So...I just thought it was interesting that the President singled out Syria as a human rights violator, yet we denied a man legal representation and sent him to a place where we knew he would be tortured. This administration won't talk to Syria about the problems of the Middle East in order to come to a peaceful solution, but this administration will certainly export our torture to them. Pure Theater at the U.N.

Odd as it sounds, it would seem that President Chavez was more or less taking statements from France's illustrious art history. The painter Ingres used similar statements referring to the painter Delacroix. Perhaps, he was taking some quotes out of time and place and referring them to the nearer present. Considering other stories in the news regarding quotes, his words might be referred to the Vatican and France for further consideration and clarification historically.

Brian- What an eagle eye! I actually got up and went to the copy of the NY Times in the living room, and sure enough there was the picture with the markings. I never noticed that detail this morning.
