The view from Hartford

Editor's note: Chip is airborne now from Hartford to D.C. He'll blog again when he lands.

I got lucky today, but a lot of passengers didn't.

Returning from Hartford, Conn., where I've been covering the Lieberman-Lamont primary, the security lines in the smaller terminal that United flies out of were no different than on a normal day. Not so in the main terminal that services Southwest and a few other airlines. Somewhere between 500-800 bedraggled passengers trudged through a security line three or four deep and longer than a football field.

Having said that, though, the level of cooperation was amazing. Many planned ahead, putting toiletries in checked bags, or willingly deposited them in bins for disposal. It seems like people have been through this drill before -- this is just a new variation.

Keeping us safe is what BushCo swore to do - it's not a favor, and nobody owes them a "thank you," especially when they're not doing anything of the sort. Did you thank Bill Clinton every day there wasn't a terrorist attack? No - because that administration didn't play on Americans' fear. I sure hope we have an honest election in '08, so those lying chicken hawk war criminals are investigated.

I cannot believe that there are some people in this country that think this plot is some sort of conspiracy to improve the popularity of the Republican party during an election year.

It's time for everyone in this country to wake up and realize that there are rag head wackos out there ready to carry out their evil deeds in the name of Allah. It makes no difference if a Democrat, Republican or Independent is in office. All they want is death and destruction of the "Infidels" at any price.

For what it's worth, we should have taken them down during the first Gulf War while we had the chance. Turn the place into a sheet of glass and claim the oil reserves for ourselves and the rest of the free world.

Why are we reacting this way to this so called terrorist plot? Our checked luggage could have explosives in it also. There is no way to make us
completely safe if someone wants to blow up a plane.
I had my tweezers taken out of my makeup bag in tahiti a couple of years ago. what was I going to do pluck someone with them? It is all ridiculous.
I believe it is all done to make us scared again so
the people will think we must elect Republicans to keep us safe. Ha HA! Bush has made everyone in the world less safe because of his so-called war on terror.

Lieberman loses and the threat chart changes color. Before the 2004 election every time Bush's poll number dropped the threat chart went up - remember the war! - and now with the Lieberman loss (a mandate against the war) the threat chart is back.

Where was the threat chart after the 2004 election? Vacationing in Crawford?

Oh my goodness---this time Blair/Bush have gone over the top. How in the WORLD did we ever survive World War Two? THEY were not around to protect us. Now, whisper after me, "Islamic terrorists,"---keep repeating until you become nauseated. Then, begin again, and you will become a believer in THE DECIDER!

To all you wishing thinkers who want to bash the Bush administration. If you don't think the terrorists aren't planning something everyday, you are wrong. I hate the see the day Democrats get into office and say that everything is fine......until we all get blown up. We must stand up and fight anyone who wants to take away our freedom. If you have never traveled to another country, you don't realize the freedom we have here in the USA. I thank the administration for keeping me safe.

When will the people of the United States realize that we are at War. The terrorist are real and they want only to kill, but they are cowards and will not put on a uniform.

So my friends do you feel safer today? Or do you feel that maybe this whole thing was just a way for Bush and Blair to spike up their falling ratings by trying to scare us to death? We will see. But to be honest whats going to happen the day we discover that the terrorists are hiding bombs in tampons? Are we going to make sure that none are allowed on the plane? Or maybe the day that some terrorist swallows about a pound of plastic explosive with a detonator. Then what??? Everyone will have to puke before they get on board?? Today people are flying with no water or soda on board the planes because the TSA fears they may explode. Stupid so stupid.

Terrorist plots are frequently broken up via domestic security in Eurpoe. The question is can our government protect us in the face of this new threat? The answer, I believe, is no. This administration has been too pre-occupied with conservative religous appeasement (i.e.: Terry Schiavo, intelligent design, and blocking stem cell research) for any successful governmnet response to terror and/or natural disasters. Internet spying and phone tapping has not protected American civilians but only erode the democratic values we have. Now, as we see today, fear is the only method the Administration has to deflect their flailing policies and the media eats it up then broadcasts it. As hurricane Katrina and the cuts in terror funds to major cities prove, this government is not taking the threat to the homeland seriously. Thank you England for thwarting this attack because if it was left to our government, we would be in deep trouble.

Oh please ! Like the Bush Admin hasn’t played the fear card before. Funny that the planes were allegedly to come from no other country but Bush’s pal Tony Blair’s. Both of them have flagging approval ratings over their pro-war stances. Again, the pot is stirred to remind us that there are “boogey men” behind every turn and to justify their political positions in Iraq and the Israeli-Lebanon debacles. That parade of the entire Department of Homeland Security for the media this morning looked like a PR event to counteract recent allegations of inefficiency and over expenditure. And, what excellent timing with Oliver Stone’s new movie about the World Trade Center opening in theatres this weekend.

I hope you enjoyed Hartford and the state of Connecticut. It's not that often that were known on the world and US stage. Were so hiddedn from the rest of America, that Connecticut rarely get's National News and national News exposure.

But All in all, Connecticut is a democrat state with pockets of Republican. The republicans tend to be in the Suburbs and rural parts while the democrats are mainly in the cities such as Hartford, New Britain, New Haven, Waterbury and etc.

So I'm glal the my state got national exposure and hope it continues on.

Gee, It looks like this latest terror "scare" has made us forget all about Joe Lieberman's loss - and his pathetic attempt to hang it there by with a bid to become an "independent." Doesn't he understand that supporting the war and Bush's failed policy does not qualify him as a moderate?

Joe should look back with pride at his past accomplishments, but realize that those are history. Like the boxer or ball player who doesn't know when it's over, he runs the risk of making himself truly pathetic.

This should come as no surprise to anyone. The fifth anniversary of Sept 11 is around the corner and numerous attempts by extremists have been thwarted around the world. These people are desperate to find a way to harm those that do not agree with their beliefs. I travel for a living and will happily check my laptop and any other article in my hand luggage that the TSA deems possibly dangerous.
