The New Normal
I am going through electronics withdrawal. I'm sitting among the masses at London's Heathrow Airport, waiting for a hopelessly delayed flight back to New York, clutching my shiny plastic bags with the few things not deemed "security threats." In my case that amounts to reading glasses, my passport, wallet and boarding pass. They wouldn't even allow us so much as a piece of paper, and pencil. Not even a book.
OK, it's not really the pencil and paper that's killing me. It's that I don't have my Blackberry, my computer (I'm writing this at a public PC in the terminal), or my iPod. The wonderful stores here in Terminal 3 beckon with all sorts of electronic wonders for the gadget geek in all of us. We can buy, but alas, we'd have to chuck it in the trash bin before we'd be allowed to board.
I never thought I'd think of the "good old days" of flying as when they only made you remove your shoes to go through security.

OMG! What did we do without cell phones, laptops and DVD players? Hard to believe that people actually boarded planes prior to the "electronic age".
I say it's time we got back to basics and I have no problem with the airline travel restrictions.

Mr. Holt:
I'm glad that you are back safely from both England and the Middle East.

Lester,
You are not going to believe what I saw today at the check in counter at the New Orleans airport!
I went to step up to get my boarding pass. The Continental rep that had acknowledged me and asked me if she could help me turned and started cutting up with another Continental rep just as I approached the counter. They continued to cut up for a minute or two. I realized they were "playfully" scuffleing over a bottle of after shave or cologne...I really couldn't determine which.
I guess I looked confused when she looked up at me. She actually said to me, "He keeps trying to take my find. It's the brand my son uses and I want to take it home!"
Can you believe it!! The workers at the airport are having a field day with all the lost items that passengers are having to through away. Many, many of these items are not ever opened. Many of them are expensive products. ALL of them are items that "their" passengers spent good money to purchase and had to dump.
While I totally agree with the caution the government is taking on airline travel, I don'e believe those that haul off the items should be allowed to filter through them and take what they want.
I believe all these items should be distributed to homeless shelters, women's abuse shelters, even to Red Cross or Habitate for Humanity. At least they should go to those less fortunate.
I took my first flight today after the security level was raised this week. I followed all the precautions given to us from new reports such as yours. I had NO problem today going through security. I actually was able to take a flight much earlier than my planned flight because I got to airport so early. It turned out to be a good thing for me!!
I think we should take this negative and put a positive spin on it!!!

Lester,
