The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

MEET ME IN...

We'll be joining you from St. Louis tonight, as a business trip brings me here. We'll originate our broadcast tonight from our NBC station, KSDK. As local stations go, it's what we used to call "a blow torch"... a hugely successful, popular, perennially-dominant television station serving the 12th largest city in the United States. I love this city and have spent a lot of time here over the years. The only problem, on this sparkling day here, is finding time to spend with one of my best friends -- the Best Man at my wedding -- who works in finance here. These trips tend to be scheduled to the minute, and this trip is no different. Incidentally, this metropolitan area will serve as the backdrop for a piece tonight by Janet Shamlian on immigration.

Getting to the other news of this day, a professional and personal note first: We were all thrilled to see and hear the video of Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig of Fox News. I have worked on several stories alongside Steve, and have much respect for his work -- and as members of this fraternity we've all been hoping that their captors in Gaza would release them. Absent that, for now, it is good to know that both men have apparently been treated well. While we are not anxious to give their captors any propaganda boost, we are thrilled to be able to air the videotape pictures showing them both speaking.

Housing made big economic news today, and Kevin Corke will report on that story. We'll also ask our friends at CNBC for a reality check. We'll check in on the trial of Saddam Hussein. Bob Bazell will be along with a stem cell development that broke open this afternoon, and some cautions that need to be reported along with the story. We'll close things out tonight with the story that combines big business with big entertainment: Paramount Boots Cruise

So please join us for tonight's broadcast. We'll see you from St. Louis.

Brian,
Thank you for your kind words about St. Louis. As a 34 year-old who spent his twenties in Chicago, I often wonder if I made the right move back home. You reminded me that there is alot to love about the Gateway City. For that, again, I thank you.

Brian,
Glad to see you in St Louis and that you enjoy being there. Im sure you are busy, but maybe you can schedule another trip to St Louis in the next couple of weeks and do a "Fleecing of America" story.

The fleecing Im talking of is the waste of Federal Taxpayers money to brief FAA managers on the new imposed work rules of the nations air traffic controllers. It is amazing the FAA is sending its managers to St Louis at tax payers expense for at least 30 hours of briefings on imposed work rules, but only alloting 45 minutes to the people the contract is imposed on.

Talk about millions in waste!
Good luck and I enjoy your show.
Mike

Brian,

Your broadcast in St. Louis was wonderful. Keep up the great work ~ I really enjoy watching your evening broadcasts (no matter where they are from). By the way, I think your selection in clothing is fantastic!

Greetings, Brian!
We loved seeing you in St. Louis! The back drop you used for the broadcast was a fabulous way to show our wonderful city! Come back anytime.

Hi Brian. What a thrill to see the city I love and have called home all these years spotlighted. You have perfected the craft of "reporting" the news in an unbiased manner unlike some of your cable colleagues and you among the greats like and Tom Brokaw and Walter Cronkite. Come back and visit often for a good dose of Midwestern hospitality. Thanks

Boy, was it great to have Brian Williams reporting from St. Louis. I have lived in St. Louis forever and I only watch news on Channel 5. You guys have really topped yourselves. Keep up the good work. Brian you are in great shape and not bad on the eyes!!!!

Brian,

I am one of the technical crew here at KSDK and I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was to have you and the NBC crew here at out station. Although I did not get to meet you personally, I got to work closely with Bob and Jack (the satellite truck crew from Dallas) and Mark Weinstock and many others whose names I unfortunately do not know. There was not an ego or an ounce of unprofessionalism in any of them. They were all a great pleasure to work with and I wish we could have been able to spend more time with them and you here in St. Louis. Hopefully we will see you and they back here some time soon!

Brian-nice piece on VALLEY PARK MO and their ongoing immigration battle. Would love to see a piece on the new Casino going in on the Landing, lots of tax dollars which will only in turn help the city continue to grow. Overall a very nice broadcast.

I see we are talking about illegal aliens again but I think American's have lost complete touch to the word "freedom".

Mexicans have been crossing the deserts for years and willing to die to live and work here. And our brilliant country has decided that is an extreme threat to us. Our country has gone bonkers.

Instead of going after a country of people that are willing to die to live here go after the ones that are willing to die when they get here.

Hi Brian:

I appreciate your coverage from our great city! I'm sure I speak for many when I say that we are happy to have you here. Enjoy the visit!

Welcome to Missouri and thanks for keeping the spotlight on immigration. The landlord demanding national help was dead on. And the reporter was hot.

Brian,
Enjoy your time in Saint Louis and at KSDK! I just moved from St. Louis to begin my career as a reporter in California. It will be great to see my hometown (and former workplace)tonight, thanks!

Brian, it's great to have you in town today! I watch your broadcast every night and have respected your work for many years prior.

I hope you do get a chance to visit with your friend today.

St. Louis - we're perfectly centered, remarkably connected!

Brian:
Hope you can enjoy yourself somehow in St. Louis. We're experiencing a resurgence here that is unprecedented - we're building downtown like crazy! As you mention, it's a jewel of a town and we're thrilled your here to show us off.

Greetings Brian,

I am so happy for you to have an opportunity to spend some quality time with best friends/Best Man when you are out and about in your travels.

With all your responsibilities; with all that you do for NBC etal, I can only believe they "own" your schedule most of the time. Good for you to point out the importance of touching base with friends/family.

Hi Brian. Welcome back to St. Louis! It's a hot one. I'm excited to see you broadcast from my fair city tonight. We in the midwest often feel overlooked by the national media, though I do appreciate your broadcast giving our recent storm/power problems some coverage. Also, I completely agree with you about the JonBenet story. Some of your colleagues (specifically on cable) seem to have lost their minds. Maybe you can slap some sense into them?
