Friday outlook
Hey everyone, Campbell Brown in tonight for Brian Williams... who is finally getting a much deserved break.
We have a lot of ground to cover... and we have correspondents around the globe following new developments in this foiled plot to bomb flights from Britain to the U.S. Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers is in London tonight where she will have today's developments. Authorities are telling us they are still searching for as many as 20 additional suspects. Five have been identified by name. Lisa looks at just how advanced this plot was, as law enforcement officers today sift through evidence at the homes of the suspects now in custody. She will have more detail on who these suspects are... mostly young men, two women; some recent converts to Islam. Plus, how an arrest in Pakistan 10 days ago may have led to this week's dramatic developments.
From Washington, Pete Williams is looking at how real the threat was and what might have happened if the suspects had been able to get these liquid explosives on board U.S.-bound flights. Could they really have exploded a plane with the type of bomb they were planning to use? Investigators say yes and tell Pete that they are alarmed by the simplicity of the devices.
Tom Costello has been tracking the movement at airports around the country today. He reports long waits (3-5 hours) at security with some airline delays and cancellations. While Tom says passengers today have been surprisingly patient, airlines fear the current situation is not sustainable, that financially the airline industry won't be able to manage the disruption in schedule. He also points out that many airports are still without the technology to detect explosives, and that it could take 20 years and billions of dollars to make the technology available in all U.S. airports.
And as I am writing... there are reports of a cease-fire agreement in the Middle East brokered by the U.S. and France. A vote at the U.N. is expected tonight. Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell is here in New York and will have all the latest. Plus, Richard Engel from southern Lebanon on the effect the violence is having on civilians still trapped there.
Hope to see you tonight.

Ms Brown is also a favorite of mine also, as she presents the news in a professional manner much like Walter did! She doesn't tend to favor one or the other parties, GOP or DNC. And as far as reporting the war, she shows real concern for the lives loss, both ours and theirs. Good Job Campbell.

Campbell you are one of my NBC favorites and do a great job in the anchor chair. Thank You!
On topic, I feel that we are really losing the war on terror because everytime these thugs are coming up with something new. Whats next - watches with detonators ala James Bond! There will always be something new so long as imagination exists.
I fear that the Administrations goal with Homeland Security has created another beauracracy juggernaught with no real purpose except to do other agency jobs. Let the CIA and the FBI do what they do best...

Brian is gone for one day, and I already miss him... I love his work and think he is the best journalist in network and cable news or anywhere for that matter. Well, the important thing is that is he on a a well deserved vacation and enjoying time with his family.

Mr. Williams and NBC/MSNBC team:
First, I am a big fan and appreciate all the great reporting you do. Keep up the good work.
Second, in regards to Iraq...as the situation in Baghdad deteriorates more and more, I wonder how parts of southern Iraq (Basra) and northern Irag (Kurdish area) and even other parts of the country for that matter, are coming along with the reconstruction? We don't hear much about those areas, are they progressing or deteriorating like Baghdad? If there is progress, are there opportunities for us to display to the world the enormous effort being put forth to help with the reconstruction?
Thank you for listening!!

The UN President said everything right about how this conflict was handled. Once the US was a leader now we just set back and watch. Our President is again on vacation as possible terror starts, also he is no longer the leader. We will have to restore our position and respect in the world. So many innocent lives lost as Americans still watch our troops being picked off at will. Republican voters are seeing that Bush is wrong and we are all losing. When the American people pull together to end this invasion and bring our troops home it will be because Dems,Independant and Republicans worked together to order our representatives to do the job they should have been doing long ago. Bush is a President not a King or a dictator he serves at the will of the people at his own play games. Bush/Cheney got just a small taste of what Americans can do with the Lamont win now it will happen on a big scale in November as Americana get America back.

Any credible aircraft designer should have anticipated the possibility that an airliner could be not only hijacked but used as a missile. This was written into science fiction novels and several hijackers actually tried to fly into a hotel long before 9/11.
One could say the exact same things for any fool who designed and built a sky scrapper. Heck, my grandfather had a piece of the B-25 bomber that accidentally flew into the Empire State building 60 years ago. No way was ever developed to get people out of such a high building in case of a fire nor was their any way for fire fighters to reach the upper floors... And hear we thought the Neanderthals had really hard heads…
We never ever address the real issues of our day. Whether it is the fact that we build so many mega cities right on fault lines and in the shadow of volcanoes or the fact that we failed to develop any method to check for or prevent these liquid explosives (known about for over a decade), we literally are an accident waiting to happen. We’ll likely die off from our own stupidity long before any terrorist has had a chance to blow us up.
BEFORE IT HAPPENS - I would like to see airliners with ultraviolet missile detection systems and standard chaff dispensers like we see on every military aircraft to foil shoulder fired missile attacks!

Rehema Ellis' report tonight on the backlash the Muslim community is feeling after the foiled terrorist plan in Britian was amazing. I'm so glad that focus was drawn to the issue of of how Muslims are being treated in a post-9/11 world. The sterotypes that many have placed on the Muslim community as of late disgust me. The idea that all Muslims are terrorist extremists is absurd.

I have three comments about the almost airplane bombings:
1) The UK police knew of these people for months but only now told everyone. Were they keeping this information from Tony Blair? Was Tony Blair keeping this information from George Bush? Regardless who kept the information private, it seems to me they had no right to do so. After all, these were some of the same people who were "certain" that Saddam had WMD? What if these people got the timing wrong? What would be the story then?
2) It is scary to me that the alledged terrorists were like Tim McVeigh in that they were also native to the west. We in the West assume that one values one's life more than anything else. No longer a reasonable asumption it seems.
3) Had these people not been as greedy, i.e. had they not been shooting for so many deaths, they might well have succeeded. Thanks.

if possible, i would like to have Lisa Meyers blog a bit with a summary of her reporting on the terrorist issue and the BP's problems in Alaska. i really admire her work and would like to hear more from her.
