Faces from the Gulf: Don Powell

N_nola_060823standard"We're not moving as fast as we need to be moving and there's days I feel we didn't do as well as we should have done today. I think with any recovery process, you need to remember, it's not an event, it is a process."
Don Powell
Federal Coordinator, Gulf Coast Recovery

I spoke with Don Powell a few weeks ago during one of his scheduled tours through New Orleans. He seemed pleased to see large sections of the Ninth Ward cleared of debris and signs of rebuilding in Lakeview. At each stop, he took time to speak with homeowners and construction crews and ask them their opinion of the recovery effort. Powell admitted it might be difficult for people to see progress everywhere, but said there were signs that the recovery was on track.

TRY AND INTERVIEW PEOPLE WHO ARE THANKFUL FOR ALL THE HELP THEY RECIEVED FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE INSTEAD OF USING THIS TIME SPENT IN NEW ORLEANS TO BASH BUSH AND THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.THERE MUST BE SOME PEOPLE THERE WHO APPRECIATE THE HELP AND CARE THEY RECIEVED.

Brian:
Hope you can enjoy yourself in St. Louis, my home city. It would be great if you could mention the incredible change that's taking place in the town from just a few years ago. You can't miss the cranes and the revitalization of downtown St. Louis. This is turning into a city that works for a diverse population. Have fun in St. Louis! Like the slogan says, we're perfectly centered, remarkably connected.

While I'm glad you're getting out to New Orleans, I believe that instead of interviewing federal managers of the progress, you should interview local clean-up crew members or local organizers.

I think a better story, or at least more truthful emotions, would come out of someone who is local.

A year later and progress is being made even if you have to look for it, in this United States? Call it what you will but My assessment is that the moral trend of these States have topped out and we are collectively looking at our post civilized status and are plummeting into something akin to the Fall of Rome. When was the last time that this kind of event took so long, too long by usual American standards in assisting our common American neighbors? Look for continued lack of moral stature on the part of this administration( otherwise known as rationed administering) because that is what has become of the United States of America. No longer our we seen as moral guideposts of world direction. No longer can we assert moral leadership when our own people go wanting. When George W. Bush assails normal American policy and delivers the final blow after Katrina all I can say is that hope is on the wane!
