The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

Early Nightly, meta-edition

No video for you to watch yet (we should have that in an hour or less), but since I tagged along on this week's trip to New Orleans for the Katrina anniversary, here's a photo of Brian and Subrata recording the Early Nightly on Tchoupitoulas St. outside Restaurant August.

There is a community below New Orleans called St. Bernard Parish which suffered about 97% destruction as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The local politicians have ben complaining for years about a canal called the MRGO. This canal was man-made in the 1960's,the concern, was a potential pathway for a destructive tidal surge that would destroy St. Bernard Parish. The Fed's didn't care, and our worse fears were confirmed. Was anyone at NBC aware of this?

I am so ready to turn your station off and not spend another electic bill minute to see your broadcast.
Your interview with Professor Dyson on 8/28/06 was sooo liberal it was so blatenly one sided. Your station loves to bash the Bushes and you had to do Barbara Bush too. They all hung around for their Goverment checks instead of leaving New Orleans?Talk about being Gov. dependent. You don't show the sucesses in they now have in other States. Let's Bash Bush More. That's all you can report. I am done!

I enjoy your work and professionalism, but
whenever bad news breaks, I sure miss my old
pal "Disaster Bob" Haggar. He was the best.
I always said if I saw him heading for me then
I would turn and run in the opposite direction.
Hope he's enjoying his well deserved retirement.

At the anniversary of so much difficulty for so many I wanted to share a hopeful story. We have a home in NO that was generally (we thought) not damaged during Katrina, but certainly was not flooded and our tenant moved back in by December. Later on after a bad thunderstorm we found we needed a new roof and other repairs due to termites (who apparently flourish in swampy water). I volunteered last December on a mental health team from the DHHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (driven to help) on a cruise ship/shelter in Miss (another story)and got to see my home and neighbors. The gist of it is our neighbors recommended a contractor who has done remarkable repairs to the house, kept us completely informed about the project (including before and after pictures) and charged us fairly. We feel grateful that there are people with integrity and honesty who can really help when it is needed. Keep up your efforts Brian to keep the country and world informed about what it is still very much needed down there.

Please ask hard questions of Bush! He gets off too easily about his administrations accountability. Where did all that Aid go. What about those no bid contracts, the actual pay the "workers" recieved and how much the big contractors got. Thank you

I wanted to know where Tony Zumbado is? His report from the Superdome and film of the young lady holding her limp baby was the most stirring video of Katrina, in my opinion.

Rob, you mean they let you out of the office? LOL

Can only imagine the sights/devastation you will see. Be safe.
