Dueling lead stories

Dueling lead stories tonight and a lot of ground to cover with both the extremely fragile ceasefire in the Middle East and new developments in the investigation of the airline terror plot.

First to the situation in southern Lebanon. Today, Richard Engel traveled south with aid workers to survey the damage and try to reach people who have been trapped in some of the hardest-hit areas. The trip was a struggle with bombed-out roads and traffic jams. Thousands of people are making the journey, trying to get back to their homes to see what is left.

Harder to assess is what happens next. Hezbollah's leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah declared victory. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said this is a long-term battle that will require patience. Olmert is now facing intense political pressure and criticism for his management of the war. Martin Fletcher will report from Israel.

In London, Lisa Myers has been closely following the investigation there. She will have more on the dispute between the U.S. and Britain over when to move in on the terror suspects. Also today, Britain downgraded the threat level, but at the same time cancelled some flights because of security concerns. There are still lots of delays and lots of confusion at airports both at home and abroad. Pete Williams will look at what is happening on the homefront, asking some tough questions about just how proactive the Department of Homeland Security has been to prepare for an attack, and why research into new technologies to detect explosives is taking so long.

Also, strong words from President Bush who blamed Hezbollah for the Middle East conflict... but also bluntly put responsibility on Iran. David Gregory is tracking the President now and will have the full story tonight.

See you in a bit.

In response to the unnamed person who criticized David Gregory for not referring to Bush as the President:
Maybe if he (Bush) acted like one, folks would refer to him as one. He isn't a President of the United States. A President would serve and defend the Constitution, like every President and every military enlistee promises to do. Since the birth of the Fed, America has seen constant eroding of the Constitution, and no one has done more to push America involuntarily towards a global government than Bush. Respect is earned; it is not given by title or birthright. If Bush wants respect, maybe he should earn it. Ya know... like WORK for it? When did he ever work for anything? He has been funded his whole life, including by the bin Laden group.

David,

Please refer to George Bush appropriately, such as:

"That cursed Monkey-paw of a President, George Bush, ..."

The NBC website is great but Campbell Brown should be commended as an outstanding newscaster....naturally presenting the news as unbiased as possible. This is not intended to be a punch at Brian Williams, but Ms. Brown did a great job here on Monday night, 8/14/06, and should be duly commended.

From newspaper headlines in the Middle East - UK terror plot was a planned diversion to allow Israel to batter Hezbollah days before the cease-fire without world notice - to US news stories and blogs the US wanted the arrests to take place early (right after the Conn. election) to show Americans it was wrong to vote against Lieberman and the unofficial referendum of voting against the war the Bush administration and to bring terror back to the forefront - Bush's only strong point.

Bush has so polarized this country (and many parts of the world) that many would almost rather see a terrorist attack to prove Bush is wrong in his policies than to side with him.

Even if you agree with Bush and his policies there must be something wrong when those policies have fermented so much hate.

This sounds like Jose Padilla- ultra dangerous terrorist who probably couldn't have lit a fire cracker. That's why Bush wants to jail people without due process - they know they don't have a case but somebody's getting prison time, anyway.

Just a comment on David Gregory tonight. He referred to President Bush a number of times as "Mr." Bush. It seems disrespectful. I'm sure whatever one's politics may be no one could argue he should be addressed as the President of the United States, particularly a national news reporter.

Did anyone find out how many of the "terrorists" in the UK had passports? Not many...and we are told they were going to do a dry run in less than a week...WITHOUT PASSPORTS?

Given the highly vulnerable nature of our cities, I think the military should try to establish small "defense base-like" outposts from which anti aircraft missiles can be kept. I'm not talking about some mega military base. Just a 24-person, 25m-diameter, cylindrical garrison that is equipped to shoot down a runaway airliner if fighters cannot make an intercept is all that is needed. Such patriot missile systems can be stored in the vertical position are ready to go. An armored mortar position might be able to fire anti-tank shells if a city were under a ground attack.

If not a military outpost, such defensive items could be built into a new and much more robust emergency center that combined fire, police, medical, and municipal functions to cope with everything from a dirty bomb to a devastating hurricane. In fact, if you go out to www.Trafford.com/04-2708 and page down to the bottom, you will see two diagrams of just such an emergency center. Rooftop helicopter pads and a few pre-positioned national guard assets would round out such an amazing facility.

That is how to prepare – not just sit and wait for it to happen!
