AS I WAS SAYING...
I boarded an aircraft last night for a flight across the Atlantic and a summer vacation with my family. I arrived this morning in another era entirely. Today's news has already had a staggering effect on air travel. As a writer to our blog put it today, "flying naked without luggage" may not be enough to solve this problem. I do know from our perspective here in London, and from conversations with Americans today, that this has increased the already-palpable sense of sadness and unease about our world, the dangers that surround us, and the challenges we will leave to our children. Some people I know are dealing with what can only be called dread.
We'll have our usual thorough coverage of this tonight. Keith Miller will start us off here in London, and our coverage will whip around the world back to the United States, where liquids are now banned from airplane cabins.
For now, and in this space, there is little to add to the story that Americans woke up to this morning. Here in London, the threat level (red) means an attack is "imminent" -- as one official here put it: "we are in a long, wide and deep struggle against a very evil people." It was minutes later when another official told people to try their hardest to "go about their business." It's getting that balance right that may mark the coming years.
We hope you can join us as we originate the broadcast from London tonight.

I want to say to you, Brian, that your question if there is any good coming out of the arrest of these ten who had been arrested is quite accurate. Brian, you know as far as I do that the arrets helped to ploy the plot and preventd the deaths of who knows how many innocent lives. Your purpose, I believe, was to cause people to stop amd think and be thankful for Scotland Yards, our own FBI, and the various police agencies agencies in both England and the United States. For many, we, as a nation, have become complacent about 9/11 within the various years since 9/11. I've heard so much grumbling in the security lines. What's more import, being late for you meeting or possibly being blown up in the air? I'll take being late or arriving the next day for a meeting even if I'm the main speaker than I would be not having a more than accurate security check on everyone every single person boarding tat plane. Folks, if you're complaining verbally or inside of your self for being late, thank your lucky stars that there are folks so dedicatedto making you safe they're eilling to make you late to do so. Start looking at Delays that way!!!By the way, Brian, everyone is different and you will never take Tom Brokaw's place, however, in the years to come, no one will be able to take your place, also.

WOW, Brian, what a way to start vacation. Maybe ya should try Disney next time. (Smile). Hope the rest of your well deserved vacation is relaxing and pleasant.

Seriously to all of you out there who say "hey when will the lines be drawn, wheres our freedom to bring drinks and such onboard, its absurd, they've already won" stop and think for a second. Even if it seems rediculous its still safer, no matter how little or much, than it was before to bring these new rules into effect.
To those saying they've already won, who cares? If this happened to actually be a plot and they did go thru with it, thier victory would of been even greater because A) they werent stopped. B) they disrupted travel. C) they killed ALOT of people. D) the psychological effects it would of had. Instead a possible all out victory in your eyes was turned into something so small and insignifacnt that you'll forget about it in a month or two and go on about your life normally.

If these materials could make a bomb, why were they ever allowed on aircraft the past 5 years? Why would they ever be allowed again as we will never be safe from terrorism? Whether it is five months or five years, we will never know when they will strike. Why would we ever let our guard down? The red, yellow, orange color alert system means nothing at this point. There are just too many terrorist organiztions out there and we should always be on guard.

I just want to thank you, Mr. Williams, for your summation this evening regarding our times in light of the London terror threat et al.
We are living in a strange and frightening time. You put into words the emotions many of us are having, though we are not often as eloquent.
Without attempting to overstate this, I feel your statement this evening is reminiscent of Edward R. Murrow.
All the best,
Travel safely

Am I the only one that finds the timing, er, coincendental. If the operation of the "months long inquiry" was, as stated, "months long" why was Mr. Blair and Mr. Bush both awol on holiday when the excecution of the pick ups was emminent? Policys are coming apart at the seams as well as long sought after cordial relationships are rapidly disolving amongst leaders and peoples, but the fear factor is always effective at getting the ink on the front page to change colors. Amazing how guilible we all are.

Brian, you asked tonight, could there be any good that can come from the arrest of these guys in the UK. Like maybe saving the lives of hundreds of people on those 10 planes, you think?
That was the most stupid question I have ever heard, and you were obviously NOT thinking.
You make it so easy for me to seek alternate news sources.

Dear Brian: You did an excellent job on this evening's broadcast; once again, Nightly News is the evening news program to beat for breaking news.
I do have one request, however: can you please issue an edict to your writers and correspondents banning the use of the phrase "the new normal" on the broadcast? I heard it three times this evening. Not only does it sound stilted to this viewer's ear, but it is rapidly becoming a cliche. "New normalcy" would even be preferable, as archaic as "normalcy" sounds. Thanks.

ok first off i am sick of hearing how air travellers are being burdened by this development. people just shut the hell up, a major terrorist attack was stopped and by being stopped saved tons of human lives. grow up and quit being crybabies because you cant get on a plane ten minutes sooner. begin thanking people at the airports for being there to possibly save your crying self. the terrorists have to be stopped and will be as long as we stay hot on their tails. goodnight and god bless the good guys.

Brian, I'm sorry about your interrupted vaction. I truly appreciate all you do with the blog and the broadcast to keep us informed. Keep up the good work.
My only question is, if you were to buy a drink or something like contact solution once you passed through security, couldn't you then take it on the flight? I would think that if something was bought within the airport, it wouldn't matter if you took it on the plane.

Waiting now for the changes in airport screening procedures after the "underwear bomber" and the "bomb's hidden in my a** bomber".
We can't tie our society into a pretzel every time some schook comes up with the next bizarre way to sneak a bomb on board a plane. We need to be realistic about the risks. Compare the fatalities caused by terrorists to the fatalities caused by, oh, say automobiles. Or incompentent, militant administrations.
BTW, AP says the Brits had infiltrated the group *last December* -- wonder why they pulled the trigger today? I can just hear the phone call last night: "Yo, Blair, I got a problem."

This seems very conveniant that at a time when Pres. Bush and Blair's ratings are falling apart and the war in Iraq is becoming more and more troublesome that the nations needed a reminder that the war on terror is still in full swing and they are still out there trying to get us and that the war in Irag has once again saved us from the terrorists. I am sure there are quite a few groups being watched around the world for their rediculous quests and talk about how they will bring about some great doom. This one seems a little suspect that the government actually believes these guys were going to smuggle some unknown chemical in containers onto a plane in amounts large enough to bring it down in 9 seperate airplanes. Of course we can make anything look like we want it to. I worked in law enforcement and it didnt take much effort to make any small group of drug dealers or bad guys appear to be the largest group of drug dealers ever. A little dope and a lot of talk and a couple of meetings and kazaam. The war in Iraq and Bush as our hero has saved us all again. Lets look at how many of our kids died and other citizens in Iraq today while we have been patting ourselves on the back........

Again, The TSA & Home Land Security is over reacting causing all Americans undo stress and money. They were not prepared for this morning in Seattle. Our government should be ashamed. They were simply not prepared the handle the masses at our airport. The checkpoints were way under staff. The lines long. Flights delayed. 2 Hours early did not even get you through the lines.
Somebody please get this straiten out. I have lost faith in our current government.
Somebody please get this strainten out.

Every time we allow terrorists to disrupt world travel, they have already won. How many times will we allow them to do this before the world economy is ruined?

I just listened to 1/2 of news and everything provided by the British government and the US Administration was taken as gospel (word intended). I understand that as the news is happening fast and furious the chance to test the validity of the offered information is limited but 2 things were disturbing; (1) the terroist "experts" did not even use the hedge words that most experts use when discussing their chosen topic, leaving the impression that everything is true and vetted and (2) Brian Williams took the time to lament and pontificate at the end of the program as if all has been proven. How many times have these investigations turned out to less than advertised!!!! Most have not even stood the test of an airing in the courts. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I am a heavy cynic. Our government has time and again distorted the facts for politcal gain. Here comes the next and newest crisis (the cry wolf syndrome). We only have reporters to sort through and tell us the truth. Again the media abdicates its repsonsibility to question and then report. The media lost its moral authority with the Iraq war. Have you learned nothing!!
Mike Griffin, Pittsburgh PA (Sent Aug 10, 2006 7:25:26 PM)
Dread and sadness is right. Killing only leads to more killing. What world is this? Seems to me that the average guy in the US wants the same as the average guy in Iraq, Pakistan, anywhere: peace. Why can't we (our governments) make that happen? I used to have hope that we could have peace, but now I know I will never see it, even if I live to be 120.
Thanks for having such great coverage, as usual.

Mr. Williams,
Thank you for what is the most brilliantly on-target commentary I have ever heard. My husband and I have the depest respect for your integrity, compassionate approach to reporting, and knowledge. In this horrbly uncertain time, it is comforting to know that you are at the helm of such an influential news program.
Of all of the politicians and newscasters we have heard today, you were the only one to nail the issue. Perhaps we should start a campaign for williams for President, to have a leader we can actaully believe in.

Dick Cheney gloating over Lieberman's defeat because of the carnage it will cause in the Democratic party - what more do you need to know? Those criminals are scared !!!!less over the possibility of an honest administration investigating them. Why else are they trying to grant themselves exemption from prosecution for torture?
Let the rule of law return the the U.S.! Vote Halliburton and President Nero out!

I appreciated the remarks of those who think we'll be "flying naked" before its all said and done. It's funny, but may hold some truth for the future of air travel.
I may be in the minority with this thought, but I think these new restrictions just might be over-kill, and nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction. First, I've got no problem with banning the beverages as you enter the security check. I've seen people waste more time making sure they didn't spill their Starbucks in the security line, than just getting their bags on the belt, shoes off, and mouth shut. Get your coffee after you get through security. Second, these new restrictions on the "liquid" items like toiletries are just a reaction to what the Brits have foiled. How come security screeners were not looking for such forms of explosives in their normal screening efforts prior to today? If I was a security screener, and I saw lots of hair gel and lip gloss in the carry-on bag of a bald man, you bet he would be detained! I think the TSA should focus on better screening tools and techniques, instead of making us Americans "fly naked".
Jennifer, Brighton, TN (Sent Aug 10, 2006 6:56:47 PM)
Just heard on your broadcast that it is required to taste Baby Formula if you want to take it through a airport checkpoint. Not true, repeat, not true. It will be subject to addition screening, however(for the third time) you do not have to taste it in front of a TSO ( Transportation Security Officer). Please check your facts.
P.S. I am employed with the TSA and would you please keep my name confidential

The Roman empire and the British empire had to deal with trying to occupy the muslims' holy lands. Both failed eventually! Maybe it's time to pull an old British empire trick. Try and remain on decent terms with the 100's of millions of the people; and GET OUT OF THEIR LANDS ASAP! Heck, England occupied 'our land' for 200 years, counting the forts in the west after the revolution. Our colonials eventually did what all peoples would do. They kicked them out. It took 2 bloody wars and terrorism from both sides, before it happened, but if happened. Maybe it's just me, but just maybe 'these nuts' would leave us alone, if, WE GOT OUT OF THEIR LANDS. Then, if we left and the unoccupied nation states still killed or sponcered the killing of our people, then it's a legitimate full-out invasion of whoever is responsible! Not 'one-hundred thousand' US troops, a war on the cheap. But full mobilization of millions, and everybody fights and sacrifices. I still would do just about anything, before helping to start world war lll though!
