Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

A whole new way to make us fear

Editor's note: Clare was on her way to Burbank, Calif., from New York Thursday morning for a Nightly News assignment in Los Angeles. She writes this missive about her airport experience from her Blackberry Wireless Handheld.

Even in this post-9/11 world, the scene that greeted bleary-eyed travelers in the morning darkness at JFK International Airport was surreal: "No liquids or gels of any kind" read hastily printed signs taped to the check-in desks.

Those who noticed them hastily shoved mouthwash, toothpaste and sunblock into their luggage, but most did not, unaware of what was playing out at security. Air travel, an Ironman-worthy test of endurance on the best of days, today will stretch every passenger and airline worker to the limit.

At the security line, the usual suspicious objects -- laptops, iPods, killer sneakers -- were all but forgotten as TSA workers shouted at people to throw away eyedrops, lotions, lip gloss, bottled water, anything at all.

One young woman chucked an entire Mario Badescu skincare kit into the trash, looking simultaneously bewildered, enraged and tearful. As a beauty product junkie myself, I felt her pain.  I made a show out of jettisoning a small tube of Neosporin so they might not take the half-full tube of $50 sunscreen in my bag. All the while, bits and pieces of the story were bruited about in a strange game of "telephone":  "I heard it was nuclear weapons!"

Epic screaming matches broke out over baby formula, with the dueling agendas of protective parents and those protecting us from terrorism locked in steely combat. The hapless woman who runs the day spa at the Jetblue terminal found herself and her stock the subject of intense scrutiny.  Who knew what lurked within the colorful jars of pomegranate face cream?

On board the plane now, a member of the flight crew is relating how even they were forced to throw away their lunches. There's no water on board, and we weren't allowed to bring any on board. This should be a fun six hours.

"The TSA, they don't know what they're doing," the crew member fumed to no one in particular.

Someone knows what they're doing, though -- those who have found a whole new way to make us fear flying, and wonder about that mini tube of toothpaste in the bag of the guy in 35F.

Ever notice how the terrorists aren't attacking countries like Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, Austria, Panama, Iceland, New Zealand, Korea, and Namibia?

Sometimes a more humble foreign policy based on mutual respect is more effective than one that is based on tough talk and bombs...

The timing of this "terrorist plot" is interesting, coming right before elections. It seems to me that "terrorists" are very interested in keeping Republicans in office. I wonder why.

the media is all whipped up into a frenzy. flights have been canceled, people are pissed, and the thwarted terrorist attack may or may not have ties to Al Qaeda. every time there is another story, another foiled terrorist plot, another radical brown person on tv, i feel like the media (or government or whomever) tries to make us all believe we're going to die. they tell you to remain calm, live your life, but every news story talks about what could have been, how many people COULD have been killed, when and where the next attack will occur, and why we need to "remain vigilant" against the terrorist. if i were a conspiracy theorist, i might say that this whole liquid terror plot comes at a mighty convenient time. the US & UK are getting our asses kicked by the international community because we have laid back and let Israel bomb the allah out of Lebanon, and the administrations are in need of a distraction. you know, something to remind the world that there are evil doers lurking around every bottle of Pantene.

funny how words take on a significance not originally ascribed to them....

concentration = to concentrate....
camp = place where people stay....

the japanese internment camps were in fact concentration camps.... hitler did bad things in concentration camps and distorted the meaning.

dont we have british intelligence to thank for the slam dunk of weapons of mass distruction?

good point CT,Hey Breanne- why not round up any Latinos who might be associated with Columbian Drug Czars and African Americans who might be associated with gangs? Clearly if they are of that skin color and nationality they MUST be associated with crime, ehh Breanne?? And since I am white and of German decent and Catholic background, I must naturally hate Jewish people and have Nazi ties, right?.Ignorance is not bliss in this case, it's dangerous.

Curious to know if Breanne has an inkling of what she speaks of and where she came up with her theory of ridding America of Muslims? No wonder we are so hated! Keep quiet with your juvenile and uneducated talk, you scare me about as much as the terrorists, it's people like yourself that are making peace more difficult, your hate is as bad as extremists. Clearly you "don't know what we should do" hate and ignorance does cloud good judgement!

Authorities have known about this for months and TODAY, all hell breaks loose. We should've been made aware of this sooner, prepared for the eventuality of these items being banned from our carry ons and dealt with it just like everything else we do so we can fly and get from Point A to B faster. I'm flying tomorrow, with a small carry on for a 2-night trip, and will buy toiletries on the other end. No big deal. The way this played out, the chaos it has created just makes terrorists chuckle in their little victory.

So do we continue to give up our freedoms and not get involved with defeating terrorism at its door steps, i.e., Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc... or do you as Americans says lets pull out, lets give up, we don't want to be involved. On Septeber 11th, 2001 we were not given the choice. Today we are remined that we still do not have the choice. We must go forward, we must defeat them in there homes. Force this fight into there back yards or this will not stop, we must not pull back. We are in a new war that has no bountries and requires a steadfast approach. This is WWIII and only history will know if this true and I do not want to wait to find out in a history book that we let this happen to our children and only watched because we were afraid!!!

Breanne -

First of all, you missed the point - you advocate ridding America of muslims - you said "send them all back to where they came from and stop letting new one in". It is the idea that we should exclude in any way a group of people based on their religion (or race etc)which is despicable. It is that you seem to believe that because someone is Muslim, or from a Muslim country that they are evil and don't deserve to be here that I object to. This country was founded on freedom of religion - All Religion - not just the ones you like!

Secondly - here's the definition of a concentration camp:
Main Entry: concentration camp
Function: noun
: a camp where persons (as prisoners of war, political prisoners, or refugees) are detained or confined

I'm pretty sure those Japanese who were kept in camps in WWII would disagree with you.

Yes, there should be a way of tracking Muslims within our country(s). After all, about 95% of the terror acts in the western world, including the burning and rioting in France and Denmark was committed by Muslims.

Just watch the news today where all the violence and blood shed is you will see Islam has something to do with it. South America is the only place on earth I can think of where Islam has not been at work killing or planning to kill in the past 5 years. It's ridiculous that people can't see what is truly at work here. This is a religious war, and all of us who are not Muslim are the targets. They hate us for what we are and the lives we live.

"there has NEVER been or never will be conentration camps in the US"

Just. Plain. Wrong. You know not of what you speak.

HEZ and JC from WAHSINGTON DC
Apparently you did not read my comments carefully. I clearly stated that I am NOT saying we should do what we did during WWII to the Japanese.( And they were not concentration camps - there has NEVER been or never will be conentration camps in the US) I was just making the statement that back during WWII when they could not figure out who were genuine American Japanese and who were not they gathered them together and kept them under survaillance until they sorted it out. Or at least that was the way I understood it. I would NEVER in my life suggest putting anyone in a concentration camp and I truly resent you as a person (JC from Washington DC) for implying that I would.
I really dont know what we should do. All I am saying is that it is disgusting that America is no longer America. We are not free. We are being banned from taking everyday things with us on vacations. Ok- so if it means that we arrive from point a to point b alive and unscathed, I am all for not taking anything on a plane. But that is not freedom. And America is supposed to be all about freedom. The "terrorist" are going to continue to find ways to breach our security. They want us dead, and there are terrorists that are living here as American citizens, we just dont know who they are. I am NOT saying there arent muslims, arabs, iraquis, ect out here that love America and hate terrorists, I am sure there are, what I AM saying is there are Muslim-American terrorists hiding in America and we are blind to that fact. And until our government can guarentee our safety, and our children's safety while enjoying every day activities, something has to be done to more closely monitor who and what comes into this country.

Tell you what, how about they also ban carry-on lunches that stink like garbage? That's what some of the fast-food smells like that people bring on board now that the airlines will no longer provide in-flight meals. We're all too fat anyway; most of us can afford to miss a meal. And this is war, right? At least the airlines still allow passengers to use the lavatory on flights, even if we can't form a line at the forward lavatory.

To: 'Am I crazy or have the last two attacks come from home grown citizens of Britain?'

Adding to the existing problem won't help us fix this. Cutting off Muslim immigration is the first step; dealing with those who are already here is the second step.

Lol! A people get the government they deserve. As an American citizen who packed up and left for one of the several better places to live in the world I have zero sympathy for any of you. You've been lied to, manipulated, and terrorized by your own elected officials (rgardless of political party) for decades. You deserve the kind of life you live these days. You're all ignorant and arrogant sheep.

I don't believe that there were "epic battles" at JFK over baby formula. It was my understanding that parents may bring baby formula on the plane with them but they must taste some first to confirm the substance is really formula. I don't understand why some people view security at the airport as our enemy. How about we just get them all out of our way by firing them and just take our chances? Would that work better for you?

The "terrorists", both foreign and domestic, have won.

Amen to the last comment. This was a huge victory against the evil of Muslim extremism and we all should be grateful that the British foiled this plot. We should also all be grateful that the images we see on the news tonight are of people waiting in long lines to check in at Heathrow rather than pictures of panic-stricken families arriving at U.S. airports to find their loved one's flight information reading "see agent" on the Arrivals screen like we saw after the Lockerbie tragedy.

I also find spending $50 on sunscreen to be very wasteful considering that some families live on that little in one month in some parts of the world.

You go Brian!

Shoot. Lets deny water to all passengers util like 20 minutes into the flight (gosh help us if it gets delayed on a hot tarmac for two hours).

But lets be sure to let the thousands of unknown individuals continue to stream across the border every day to dissapear into our cities....

A post stated "For a part to the long term solution, immigration from Islamic countries should be stopped immediately. Britain (and all of Europe), Canada, the USA and Asian countries such as Japan, China and Korea would be wise to adopt this policy. My experience is that these people do not wish to integrate into the local culture, but for their own sects and ghettos in cities."

Am I crazy or have the last two attacks come from home grown citizens of Britan?

Based on your premise, looks like we should throw out the hispanics too because they want to keep their culture....OPPS! I just opened the border discussion :-)

It's a shame that the Brits can foil such terror plots when our Homeland Security and all our other government ears and eyes supposedly watching over us can't even find 11 Egyptian students. I'm wondering if any of these students or for that matter any of the presumed airline bombers have been making any international telephone calls into or outside the states. Maybe At&T can sell some more lists - we might be able to follow-up after the fact and confirm a plot or two in the next few months or years.

How did this blog about the conditions at an airport get into discussion on the merits of Dems vs Reps or it's Bush's fault, no it's not. Do you realize how close we came to another major disaster. Take a deep breath, hug your children and thank God and the Brits and the Pakistanis that we have dodged a bullet.

Newsflash: The TSA has made a joke of airline security. Randomness is pointless, futile and an incredible waste of time and resources. Draconian, paranoid, irrational responses by DHS, TSA and King George serve no purpose, stop no terrorists and only create frustration and anger, aggravating the hell out of the thinking, non-sheep public. Do you think even a single terrorist has been forced to change his plan today because of the new ban on liquids? Pretty unlikely. But we can’t let grandma take that dangerous toothpaste between San Francisco and L.A., now, can we? Maybe we should call “political correctness” by its real name, “random stupidity” and go from there.

Of course, virtually all of the cargo that's just a few feet underneath our now-dehydrated, annoyed, guilty -until-strip-searched butts hasn't been checked AT ALL!!

To those who say accept it and move on, I ask how much more of your freedom are you willing to give up to protect your freedom? When will it stop? We must demand changes in the security procedures, throw the randomness out the window and actually stop, oh, I don't know, terrorists?

Our presence in Iraq is the catalyst, not the cure. The insanity and pointlessness of the war is clear and the policy is a failure; make no mistake - we are only provoking the lunatics, not stopping them. Cut and Live beats the hell out of Stay and Die. Oh, and the hundreds of billions of dollars saved might come in handy someday, too.

Anyone who wants to blow up a plane can find a way around the post-reactive, never-proactive TSA and the idiots who run it. Maybe the terrorist SOB’s will try checked baggage next time (oops! now you get to take no baggage at all!) or attack another form of transportation and then we can all be randomly terror-screened at every bus stop and subway and train station in what used to be America. Be sure to allow two hours between transfer points…

By the way, I'd like to propose we ban water bottles and all liquids from the illegal hordes crossing our southern borders. Maybe that will stop the invasion.

What happened to the country that I used to be proud of? Sadly, it's gone forever. Canada, is there any vacancy?

For a part to the long term solution, immigration from Islamic countries should be stopped immediately. Britain (and all of Europe), Canada, the USA and Asian countries such as Japan, China and Korea would be wise to adopt this policy. My experience is that these people do not wish to integrate into the local culture, but for their own sects and ghettos in cities. My city, not to mention Paris are good examples of this. Theses communities are already hot beds for Islamic terrorist and breeding grounds for ideas on how to kill all of us 'infidels'.

No name - Unless you have lots and lots of money and/or really good qualifications you can't just move to Australia - not sure about the other ones but I suspect that is true of most countries.
