The Daily Nightly from NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

About this blog

The Daily Nightly began on May 31, 2005. As Brian wrote in his first post it aims to provide a narrative of the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process at NBC Nightly News. Brian weighs in every weekday and NBC News correspondents and producers post regularly.

Brian Williams became the seventh anchor and managing editor in the history of NBC Nightly News on December 2, 2004. Read his full biography.

The World on Sunday

Hi guys... It is Hoda filling in tonight for John Seigenthaler who is still under the weather this weekend...  So tonight, you get me...  Hoda Kotb.  (I know, I know, buy a vowel) ....

A lot going on today..but let me just set the scene in the newsroom. Producers are on the phone with correspondents.... trying to iron out their spots.... TVs are blaring...MSNBC, CNN, FOX..and of course--the World Cup.   (Do you care if France beats Italy?)  Urgent wires are crossing giving us the latest information around the world.

Ron Allen is working on the story of the 4 U.S. soldiers charged with raping an Iraqi girl and killing members of her family.   A fifth soldier is charged with not reporting it to authorities.  Ron just had a pow-wow with Senior Broadcast Producer Bob Epstein about the elements of his piece...they are adding/subtracting elements.

Ned Colt is in Baghdad and will do a spot on the incredibly violent day in Iraq today...dozens of Iraqis killed in ambushes and bombings.  We expect him to phone in soon with his script.

The news is tough today..but there is also a lighter side. I still can't believe this --but the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" brought in more money than STARWARS on its opening day.  We have a little item on that in the show... also...a little sports news--Wimbledon and the World Cup... and hey ..what is a Sunday night broadcast without...a little birthday party.
Tune in and check it out...

Cheers,

Hoda

By the way...I am rooting for Italy.

Regarding ticket sales for "Pirates" exceeding "Star Wars" ... perhaps that's because ticket prices have increased since Star Wars.

Although the studios/press quote ticket sales sold (in dollars), the more accurate report would be the *number* of tickets sold, not their value. Reporting on dollars/revenue comparisons is a worthless statistic, unless you adjust for the difference in the cost of a ticket.

we hope you will please pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery to John...he is missed.

Sat. eve. news interviewed Jennifer Granick of the Standford Ctr. for Internet and Society who said she believes it is "totally fine to use somebody else's wireless, and the reason why is because the owner has complete control over whether they want someone else to be able to use it or not." Does that mean that if I fail to lock my door that it is O.K. for someone to walk into my house and use my stuff because, after all, I had control over whether or not I chose to lock my door or not? Sounds like all the kids who have told me (seriously) that it's O.K. to copy someone else's paper during a test because if they don't bother to adequately cover it, then that's their fault. I sure hope the next time I use my credit card over the phone or at a restaurant, that that person I'm passing it to doesn't use my hard earned money for their benefit...because after all, it will be my fault for being so stupid. (By the way, I'm less bothered by piggy backing than I am behind that horrible logic to try to justify it. I think it'd be better to just say it's wrong but I do it anyway than to come up with excuses that blame others for one's choices. Take some responsibility for your actions!)

Great to see you in the seat Hoda, thanks for kepping up the blog. Looking forward to more from you especially from an inside look of what is happening and what is not in N.O.

122 people die in a plane crash in Russia, none are believed to be Americans, therefore it is a non-story?

I know, I know, too much news, not enough time. Wimbleton? Just because it was carried on NBC doesn't mean it deserves more than a mention. Just give us the name of the winner and move on, same with Italy.

Movie? Either you saw it this weekend or you didn't. Making it into a news item is just advertising for the movie and apparently it doesn't need more advertising according to the ticket sales money count. By the way, how many tickets were sold at today's prices for Pirates versus the number of tickets sold for StarWars at yesterday's prices?

It's the weekend. Time to lighten up and put out some fluff and relax.

Please pass on our most sincere wishes for a speedy recovery to John....He is missed.
