So much for suspended airstrikes
We are sitting in the back of a four-wheel drive with our flak jackets on driving through the mountains of the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. We wound up putting on all of our safety equipment after an Israeli drone targeted several vehicles that were not far from where we were.
We’re along the Lebanese-Syrian border, on the Lebanese side. Earlier on Monday we visited the town of Aaita el Foukhar, which has essentially been completely cut off. An Israeli bombing last night took out the last road in or out of town. We started hiking the last seven miles to the village, but someone spotted us along the way and fortunately picked us up to bring us into town.
Our journey to the village was really quite difficult. There were huge craters in the road that a Volkswagen could easily fit into. Why did they take the roads out? My guess is because they believe that these roads are being used to resupply Hezbollah with munitions from Syria.
The town is mourning the loss of Michelle Simaan, a 16-year-old boy who was inadvertently killed by an Israeli bomb. Since the village has essentially been cut off, he was on his way to get some food and some medicine for the village when he got killed. His 14-year-old brother, Peter, was seriously injured in the attack as well. He has a broken arm, shrapnel, and a concussion. His mother, Adel Simaan, and family are all dressed in black, sitting in their parlor, mourning the death of her son. She was inconsolable. One of his cousins, Collette Saliba, 18, explained how she has become a supporter of Hezbollah, even though she didn’t support the war to begin with, partly because of the death of her cousin.
As we were leaving the village, we heard the Israeli drone overhead, and it hit two vehicles. One was an ambulance, and the other was like a farm truck that was essentially empty, except for the driver. They ended up loading the wounded from the farm truck into another ambulance. He looked like he was in really bad shape. That’s when we decided that it would probably be a good idea to put on our flak jackets and helmets. No one was killed, but we got some pictures around the ambulance and the truck and then got out of there as fast as we could.
We had actually headed out to places like this village that had been cut off because of the fact that there was supposed to be a suspension of airstrikes today, but obviously, there are still bombs dropping, and some of them are right around us.

It seems as though everyone believes that the politicaly correct thing to do is have a cease fire. However, there is one problem with that: WAR is NOT politicaly correct, it is killing, death, destruction chaos, mayhem, ect. Israel did not want this war, but they have it once again. Again being the keyword. Hezbollah must be destroyed end of story. Hezbollah only wants war and as long as they continue to deploy thier forces in civilian areas more women and children will be killed. This is unfortunate, but they are not innocent. They freely elected Hezbollah to lead, they never confronted Hezbollah regarding UN resolution 1559 (disarm all milita's). Yet are quick to denounce Israeli military operations when things go bad.

So, just what are those ball bearings that Hezbo loads into their Katusha rockets for, anyway ? Perhaps the Israelis are experiencing a ball bearing shortage, and Hezbo is just trying to help out, but they think Fed Ex is too slow.

I guess then the US led coalition that kicked Iraq out of Kuwait in the early 90's is just the same... cowards. Becuase they used the same tactics. Destroy the infrastructure from a safe distance and then send in the troops. That's the way wars are won. You disgust me Bill for supporting a terrorist group like Hezbollah. I suppose you were happy when the towers fell.
Drew, Ogallala, NE (Sent Jul 31, 2006 6:38:35 PM)
It is ironic that Israelis would mention cowardly actiopns by Hizbollah. IDF hides in their tanks and use the hardware might and F-16 to bomb civilians and the infrastructure of Lebanon. IDF are the cowards… Hizbollah attacked military posts and not civilians. They started shelling cities in Israel after Israel bombed the civilians in Lebanon and destroyed power plants, bridges, Airport runways and Sea port. Israel attacks on shelters and killing children while their sleeping is an act of terror and cowardness. Israel has already lost the war despite their top notch military hardware. Israel, you disgust every human being on earth. May be, the world is in a much safer place without Israel (The TERRORIST STATE).

Did anyone know that Hezbollah uses the ambulances to carry pick up and take them to and from their firing zones. Come on guys, let's not be stupid about the way terroist fight. There are no rules and what you see on TV is what they want you to see. The American public and yes the media need to wise up as to what kind of people the Hezbollah are.

Who's acting like cowards? The Israelis, instead of fighting Hezbollah man-to-man like real soldiers, opt for lobbing missiles from the safety of their fighter jets against the civilian population. This is a David vs. Goliath struggle, but David is no longer Jewish but Muslim.

I would like for MSNBC to tell me who started this war? Who crossed into Israel's Soverign country and kidnapped their soldiers. Who is sending rockets daily into Israeli towns and cities hitting anything their dumb unguided missels hit. Shows you how smart these idiots are. I applaud Israel and I hope they keep up the bombardments until that bunch of cowards who hide behind innocent people and mask are all wiped from the face of the earth. They are terrorists and don't deserve to live among civilized people.

I keep hearing how Hezbollah is hiding behind women and children. So when the bombs fall and collapse various buildings, how come we never hear of Hezbollah casualties? I mean, out of tens of thousands of bombs that have fallen on Lebanon surely one of their members would be hit. Looks to me that Hezbollah is fighting more honorably than the Israelis. A few more days of this nonsense and I'll become an Hezbollah supporter too!

I agree with the last three comments. My blood pressure goes up each time I hear all the reports about the women & children; but there is no balance. Comments should be made that Hizbolla puts there missile launchers in with the women and children. Your reporters should be more balanced

Maybe the reason we are seeing more coverage of deaths in Lebanon is because the casualties in Lebanon are TEN TIMES what they are in Israel.
I would hope that in my lifetime we would have a US government that supported PEACE first and Israel second. But I'm not holding my breath.

I'm astounded by some of the comments here and the article in general. Call Hezbollah what you will but the simple fact is that a group the Lebanese people support and refused to deal with invaded a sovereign state and is attacking that same state with rockets daily. Are you American? How would you react if the Mexican army crossed the Texas border, killed a few police officers and captured a few more, then crossed back into Mexico?
Well the last time that happened it wasn't pretty and the US Army invaded Mexico, tracked the Mexican's down and dealt with them. As far as I am concerned the Lebanese are using Hezbollah to shield them from having to take responsibility for their actions. It's time Lebanon and every other country that has supported Hezbollah took responsibility for allowing them to take the actions they have. Countries like Lebanon, Syria, and Iran know they cannot get into a full scale war with other countries because they couldn't deal with the consequences so they support these 'terrorist' organizations and use them as puppets.
I have no issue with Israel or any other country defending itself. I'm also not about to hold Israel responsible for collateral damage as long as there are rockets comming out of Lebanon and landing on Israeli soil. I live in Florida, would you expect me to wait for the international community to do something about Cuba if Castro decided he was going to launch some missles at my city?

Hezbollah has attacked 1 valid military target. (An isreali war ship) and while i am saddened about the conflict, that 1 attack was a valid target. The rest of their attacks are just shooting unguided rockets towards civilan centers. They should only target military targets.
Isreal does need to defend itself, but they should not be bombing areas that have not launched rockets, and we (the usa) should pressure them into only attacking Sites of rocket attacks and not everywhere.

How is bombing an ambulance and a farm truck carrying wounded in any stretch of the imagination DEFENSIBLE???
I used to think Israel was justified - but they have crossed a moral boundary and have themselves become that which they want to fight - TERRORISTS!
(Sent Jul 31, 2006 5:56:26 PM)
Israel is the quintessential terrorist state. The oppressed have a right to defend themselves.
Paul Friday, Baltimoreno (Sent Jul 31, 2006 5:52:12 PM)
Despite all the claims and counter-claims, the real reason Israel is bombing the Lebanese is because of their intially stated reason: they want to make sure that everyone in the Arab world realizes that it costs a lot to support any organization that Israel disapproves of. However, it seems to me that they have seriously underestimated the resilience of the human spirit. Instead of fear, the emotions that the Isrealis are teaching the Lebanese is wrath and rage. Even Siniora, the Lebanese PM and former opponent of Hizbollah seems to be a devoted Hizbullah supporter now.

So much for the Bush "Democracy for the Middle East" doctrine. Hezbollah is represented in a democratic Lebanon we so recently touted. Iraq (another recent democratic success story) now condems Israel and those who oppose immediate cease fire (US). Perhaps this young girl will just work to elect more Hezbollah party members in her life. Isn't that what GWB has asked over 2500 young men and women to die for?
cara carr, bakersfield,ca (Sent Jul 31, 2006 5:43:51 PM)
Isreal obviously didn't learn any lessons from the US war in Iraq. They've lost the "hearts and minds" war, and now it wouldn't matter what happens on the battlefield.
I used to have a lot of respect for the capabilities of the Isreali military, but now they seem to be behaving like a child playing with grown-up toys, and needing adult supervision.

What the heck is up with MSNBC??????
All I have seen in your photos in this war is the suffering lebanese people, Isralie miliatry armour and people protesting Israel.
You people are so one sided, its not even funny!
Hellooooo.....what about the thousands of rockets into Israel??? What about the people who have died and been wounded in Israel?????
Good God you people are so obvious in your presentation of this war to the public and you call it fair Journalism. No wonder Fox News is kicking your butts in general viewing and this war coverage.
Sheesh...you people have no shame.
In case you need another reminder:
1. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization.
2. They have killed innocent Isralies and Americans (Marines, Navy diver, etc)
3. Hijacked and terroized innocent people.
4. Has been stockpiling rockets and missles AFTER Israel withdrew it's forces.
5. Why have they been able to stockpile???? Were they afraid Israel would unprovokely attack Southern Lebanon. I think Not they did it to launch future attacks on Israel which they have done to start this war!!!!
6. UN resolution was to have Hezbollah disarm!!!
Sheesh.....MSNBC are acting like complete MORONS and their one sided coverage of this war is a slap in the face to the efforts to defeat terrorism!!!!
I know you are not going to post this, (Another of your one-sided coverage tactics) but this is how I feel as a free speech American Citizen!!!!!
(Sent Jul 31, 2006 5:30:06 PM)
If that girl has become a supporter of Hezbollah, you should inform the Israeli army, so that they can drop a bomb on her too.
Daniel, Fullerton, California. (Sent Jul 31, 2006 5:25:00 PM)
May be when the terrorists actually stop fighting like cowards hiding behind their women and children there will not be as may casualties of actual noncombatants. And why do we only hear about what Israel is doing to them, nobody appears to want to talk about the fact that the terrorists are shooting unguided missles into Israel daily, and I'm sure the terrorists are sending those missles towards military targets right. Israel has been under attack for years from these goons, and when they fight back, all we hear about is how they are fighting back too hard. Let the terrorists rot in hell!
