Reporting from a war zone

Reporting from this war zone has drawn our news team closer. You can see them in the above photo I took in Haret Hreyk, the Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut's southern suburbs that is repeatedly targeted by Israeli warplanes. The smoke still rising from a bombing run just hours before, we were making our way through block after block of multi-storied apartment buildings turned to rubble.

That's producer Justin Balding on the left, sound man Drew Levinson in the middle and cameraman Mike Simon on the right.

Justin is enormously experienced in foreign news coverage. He's also extremely level headed, unfailingly gracious and calm under the most enormous pressure. At one point in Haret Hreyk, we could hear warplanes again overhead, Hezbollah members started shouting in panic, and people started running. Yet in the heat of that chaotic moment, Justin was cool and completely focused on getting his team out safely, even his slow moving corespondent. We are all constantly complimenting Justin on these good traits, in part because any compliment can turn his face a delightful shade of rose.

Mike is a dream news cameraman. Observant of detail and nuance, he is also a news junkie and perhaps as a result, he is gifted at video journalism. His images are capturing the human drama of this conflict with depth and meaning. For example, in an old jail in Sidon, Lebanon, that now houses hundreds who have fled the bombs, Mike brings out the haunting image of a Lebanese child peering through the prison bars into his lens.

Drew, perhaps, has shown the most courage of all of us. Being Jewish in Lebanon and Syria during this conflict creates an extra tension. Yet Drew was still willing to go with us into the heart of Hezbollah communities, where the anger at Israel and the U.S. is so intense, we had to be careful not to start riots. And still Drew's work has been stellar. Not once did he drop the ball in giving voice to the people whose lives may never be the same. Drew also makes us laugh when tensions are high. As we packed our things before heading to the border where Israeli troops are firing heavy artillery into Lebanon, I asked Drew if he had earplugs as well as his helmet and body armor. He said, "Are you kidding?  I ALWAYS wear earplugs. Why do you think your audio is so good?"

In our last meal together, I noticed we are close enough now to take food off each others' plates without explanation, as if we were family. We are tight and highly focused on getting everybody in and out safely. May we bring back something that helps explain this madness.

There will be never peace in the middle east between Isralies and the Arabes too many children died it in both coutries I as a person if any body kill my familie I will figth them all my life the U.S is taking adventage in both side the israelies and the arabes will never be a strong nation this is the game like the roman empire nothing change

doe's everyone really believe that if we were not israels ally that the middle east would be at peace and they would be in love with americans? have we forgotten iraqs invasion of kuwait? war is ugly and mistakes are made but when somebody tells me a hurricane is heading my way i run the opposite way.

Sandra,
You are asking me is it okay for Hizbollah to kill innocent CHILDREN in Israel?? No, it is not. It is sickening. If you read carefully what I said (not slelectively picking a quote out of the context), you will see that I don't care which side is right or wrong. In my mind both sides are very wrong, that's why neither can win with bombs and rockets. What is wrong is killing innocent people.
You say Hezbollah are the terrorists and Izrael is defending herself. If Izrael feels morally right and superior, why are they doing the same attrocities as the "bad guys"? How does this make them better? 32 children with a single bomb, that is sickening for every unbiased civilized mind. It is even more sickening for a democratic country that perceives itself as very civilized.
I am not Muslin or Jewish, I am Christian. But this should be irrelevant in a conversation about morality.

I think American "blind" support of Israeli actions has put America and the Americans in the way of harm. Remember "Why do they hate us?". Why should America bear the responsibility of the sins Israel is committing. Nobody can argue that what Israel is doing in the Mideast is in defiance of the United Nations recommendations and the Security Council resolutions. America must press Israel to stop the killing, and seek a final solution to the Palestinian question. Only then would hostilities end, and extremists on both sides of the border lose solid ground to fire from.

The unfortunate truth is that Israel, as a non-Moslem state, can only survive in the Middle East with a policy of perpetual forward self-defense. Non-Moslem people, the "dhimmi" like the Christian Chaldeans of Iraq are only tolerated as second class citizens ruled over by a Moslem majority. This has been the case since Islam overwhelmed North Africa and the Middle East a millenium and a half ago. Unless Israel wants to go the way of places like Maronite Lebanon, it has no choice but to defend itself, aggressively and perpetually.

The pieces of the puzzle are coming together; Syria and Iran. These two countries want this to happen. Israel must be aloud to continue their fight against Hezbollah, which is backed by Syria and Iran.

The news crew, I believe, is doing their best to bring all this to our livingrooms. However, I'd like to see and hear more about Hezbollah's agenda.

Keep up the good work guys, and keep your heads down!

Its wonder why nobody bothers about root cause of why Hisbullah snatched two soldiers when Israeli snatched their hundreds of solderis . The right to existance is not a Fancy word to US or Israel alone , its a right to Cuba,Koria ,Palestin,Iran ,Labanon and allthe rest of the country,,,Will the US agree Iran is going to Neuclear only because of the brutality of Israel show towards lebabon and Palasetin ,,, soon US also can expect the same in future ... sying for America they will start troubling your people as well ...wait and see .... thay is why Hitlor atlast took his final step.....

Great. Every news reporter is in Lebanon reporting on civilians killed unintentionally and totally ignoring rockets INTENTIONALLY fired into Israel with the intent of terrorizing and killing civilians. The Lebanese who have tolerated and harbored Hezbolah are not the innocents they claim to be. They harbor a non democratic violent militia whose prime goal seems to be the death of all Jews and 'infidels'. I don't get it.

People, are you saying that it is okay for Hizbollah (and basically other terrorist organizations) to attack Israel?
Peter - is it okay for Hizbollah to kill innocent CHILDREN in Israel??
Syed- the U.S. is supporting Israel b/c our democratic country is AGAINST terrorism!! How naive can you be?? You are living here freely!
Ali-the media ONLY shows the Arab side, they NEVER show what Israel is going through. They haven't called Hizbollah terrorists!
All of you who are against what Israel is doing - have you ever lived or been to Israel? Do you know what it is like for a country, people to live in such tension their whole lives?

Good question from the anonymous person - I HAVE A QUESTION, HOW COME WE DO NOT SEE ANY VIDEO OR PICTURES OF HEZBOLLAH'S MILITARY EQUIPMENT IN THE RUINS OR RUBBLE AFTER AN ISRAELI ATTACK?

I love getting the information on the war but I worry so about you Ann. Not only your safety but how you are doing emotionally. I always love your reporting for you show so much passion and compassion that I know to see the ugliness of war it has to tear at your heart. Please remain safe and strong and hurry home.

If UN could not implement resolution 1559 they have no right to talk about ceasefire. Looks like "status quo" is the only plan on their slate. On top of this they strut around like dummies into war zone asking that they should be saved. Heezbollah's time has come and it'll become Cheezebollah, along with their backers IRN and SYR.

The entire situation is sickening. No one can win at this so called "war". No one is right; both sides are wrong. You don't kill innocent people in the name of religion. We will be lucky to have a world by the time the next few generations make their entrance onto earth.....if there is an earth left.

The learned are not wise and the wise are not learned, so sayeth the Tao. The warmongers on both sides are to be reprimanded for their insult to humanity. The Israelis, the Hezbollah, Hamas, militant islam, the Christian far right - all are fools and insult the beauty and integrity of this planet. Lastly, the Bush Kingship needs to be torn apart piece by piece, official by official and immoral act by moral act.

Hezbullah fires their missles from civilian areas, then moves their mobile artillary so Israel can strike where it used to be. Israel needs to use drones with Hellfire missles in there so they can guide the suckers into the mobile launchers. It is sad that Hezbullah is doing this to Lebanon.

It's nice for this administration that the violence in Lebanon is preempting the news coverage of the Iraqi debacle. Violence is not the proper response to violence, nor is it the most effective response if peace is the goal. America is tied to Israel in worldwide opinion. We are not doning anybody any good killing Lebanese children. We are just creating a whole new generation of Lebanese terrorists just as we are creating more Arab terrorists in Iraq. And of course if our real goal is peace, a lot of weapons manufacturers may be put out of business and we wouldn't want that would we?

Yes Hizbullah hides among civilians. So, collateral damage is ok?! Israel isn't effectively dismantling anything but Lebanon. After this round, there'll likely be a new generation of extremists (No? Say US extremists kidnap 2 soldiers of another State. They retaliate, intensly bombing your city to get their 2 boys back?? I think your reaction, even if originally impartial, would become 'extreme'. This war started long before these 2 soldiers. Israel's invasion of Lebanon is wrong.

Hizbollah hide behind women and children to save their evil selves. I hope Israel kills every one of the Hizbollah devils.

My question is how come journalists don't show the worst - when with a single bomb 32 children were killed?! We are talking about innocent CHILDREN? Since when this society is so cynical? Do you people have children, how would you feel if they are killed by a bomb? I don't care who is right or wrong in this conflict, killing innocent CHILDREN is what is wrong!!!
I don't get it why nobody is outraged about this madness...

Does hizbullah have the means to transport their people out of the war area? Why hasen't hizbullah gotten their innocent people out of an area that Israel gave infomation that was going to be destroyed? Or is hizbullah putting their people in harm's way on purpose for propaganda.

The way we back Israel , even Israel has defied many UN resolution in past the , scince 1948, its seem to me that Israel is 51 state of American??? fro the peace we need to stop supporting Israel!!!

Ann Curry is finally getting credit, assignments, and exposure she should. We have long preferred her to other 'stars' on the morning programs. She is, and should be, a stand-out. She's literate and it's all about the news.

I agree with the comment regarding "heroic journalism". It reminds me of the movie about the CNN news crew in Baghdad during Desert Storm. I wanted to vomit. I want to know when the media is going to hammer Hezbulla for using soldiers in civilian clothing and placing weapons near UN/Civilian buildings.

Hmmm. Let's see if we can do a close (although not precise) analogy:

An internationally acknowledged terrorist group is located in Tijuana, Mexico. They come across the border and kidnap 2 U.S. citizens, demanding that we release 500 prisoners in U.S. jails. When we go into Mexico to try to find, and rescue, our citizens, they begin rocketing San Diego.

And oh, by the way, this group's public position is that the nation of the United States be destroyed (it's their avowed aim to do so) and all of its current inhabitants leave the continent and return to Europe. Notwitshtanding that, in response to international pressure, we've recently given back territory to similar groups, on the theory that land would surely buy us peace.

Do any of us doubt what the U.S response would be or that we'd be unwilling to enter into a cease fire that would return the situation to what it was three weeks before the kidnaping and rocket launches?

Has Israel's response been disproportionate and poorly targeted? Yes, absolutely, but this conflict will have a permanent solution only when terrorist groups abandon the fantasy, and their continuing efforts to assure, that Israel will be wiped off the face of the earth.

the only way for the U.S. to come out on top in this situation is to allow Israel to destroy Hezbollah. once that is accomplished we should then return to Lebanon and contribute billions of dollars to help in its reconstruction. i understand Israel is a "friend" of America but we must not turn our backs on the Lebanese people who have turned to Hezbollah because they have no protection from the aggression of Israeli hard-liners.

Typical Ann Curry always the proffesional complimenting the staff she works with and not a word about herself I have learned to admire her work and respect her as a person starting years ago on the Today Show. NBC I hope is very proud of her. Thank you Ann
