Reporting from a war zone

Reporting from this war zone has drawn our news team closer. You can see them in the above photo I took in Haret Hreyk, the Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut's southern suburbs that is repeatedly targeted by Israeli warplanes. The smoke still rising from a bombing run just hours before, we were making our way through block after block of multi-storied apartment buildings turned to rubble.

That's producer Justin Balding on the left, sound man Drew Levinson in the middle and cameraman Mike Simon on the right.

Justin is enormously experienced in foreign news coverage. He's also extremely level headed, unfailingly gracious and calm under the most enormous pressure. At one point in Haret Hreyk, we could hear warplanes again overhead, Hezbollah members started shouting in panic, and people started running. Yet in the heat of that chaotic moment, Justin was cool and completely focused on getting his team out safely, even his slow moving corespondent. We are all constantly complimenting Justin on these good traits, in part because any compliment can turn his face a delightful shade of rose.

Mike is a dream news cameraman. Observant of detail and nuance, he is also a news junkie and perhaps as a result, he is gifted at video journalism. His images are capturing the human drama of this conflict with depth and meaning. For example, in an old jail in Sidon, Lebanon, that now houses hundreds who have fled the bombs, Mike brings out the haunting image of a Lebanese child peering through the prison bars into his lens.

Drew, perhaps, has shown the most courage of all of us. Being Jewish in Lebanon and Syria during this conflict creates an extra tension. Yet Drew was still willing to go with us into the heart of Hezbollah communities, where the anger at Israel and the U.S. is so intense, we had to be careful not to start riots. And still Drew's work has been stellar. Not once did he drop the ball in giving voice to the people whose lives may never be the same. Drew also makes us laugh when tensions are high. As we packed our things before heading to the border where Israeli troops are firing heavy artillery into Lebanon, I asked Drew if he had earplugs as well as his helmet and body armor. He said, "Are you kidding?  I ALWAYS wear earplugs. Why do you think your audio is so good?"

In our last meal together, I noticed we are close enough now to take food off each others' plates without explanation, as if we were family. We are tight and highly focused on getting everybody in and out safely. May we bring back something that helps explain this madness.

Israel began its quest toward sef destruction right from their begining. They could kill all of the Hizbullah fighters and that would change very little. Another would take its place and continue the fight with new and improved technology, even the big bomb.

The problem is land, land at any cost regardless of the hate generated. For that reason, Israel is doomed and it is too late for the results to be otherwise.

Bush and other extremeist elements in the US do not server the best interest of the Middle East. If they did, they would understand that Israel is the single biggest cause for terrorist activity world-wide.

Wow! Alot of misinformed people in the U.S. People learn your soo called "enemy" before you go on thinking your a WASHINGTON THINK-TANK. CNN & Fox are not history, they are OWNED by Isreal. Anything learned from them is not 100% true. And no Isreal isn't the fifty-first state of America, America is the second state of Isreal. Why does the U.S. goverment back Isreal so dearly, because 60% percent of your elected officials are JEWISH and the rest are put into power by the Jewish lobby groups. The U.S. Goverment will slice America in half for the protection of Isreal. ASK YOURSELF WHY? ASK YOURSELF HOW? ASK YOURSELF WHOM? Ask questions and research all your information before you HATE ANYONE. There is much History at play here and it's not "TERROR". PLEASE PEOPLE GET INFORMED, REAL INFORMATION.

I can't understand how anyone could side with the terrorists.
What army drops leaflets telling everybody, including the enemy, that there is going to be an attack? What army actually apologizes for the civilian casualties it causes? Israel's.
The so-called "Party of God" intentionally targets civilians with no apology, preaches the destruction of Israel and hides behind the skirts of the civilian women while they teach their children to be suicide bombers.
If, God forbid, Israel falls to the Arab Muslims, do you think they are going to let Jews pray at the Western Wall? Do you think they'll let Christians pray in Jerusalem, Bethlehem or Nazareth? As we speak, Israeli Arabs are free to pray at the Temple Mount, hold political office in the Knesset, and are judges in Israel's legal system.
Kill the terrorists, preserve Israel's fruitful and pluralist democracy.

A mistake...How many times is Israel going to kill civilians and peacekeepers and then call it "a tragic incident"? They were so apologetic for the deaths of 4 U.N. peacekeepers...then for what heppened in Qana. Sure Israel, apology accepted over and over and over until not a single Hezballah is member wiped out, but yet instead every other man, woman, and child. A mistake, sure.Yesterday I watched British news coverage that was reported by one of the CNN reporters. During that video a Red cross truck carrying the wounded was shot at...somehow, with Israel never trying to hurt civilians, the bullet holes managed to make it smack dab in the middle of cross, not to mention the damage done to the rest of the truck. That news station was clearly doubting Israel's motives becuase between every video clip they sarcastically showed an Israeli representative saying "We do not attack civilians". Where's that media here, remember same reporter, British and U.S. coverage. Thats something to think about. On an ending note, I'm Lebanese-American and must say Israel, just as any other country has every right in the world to defend itseld. However, this has been out of control for three weeks not and I fear greatly for Lebanon. I fear for all those who have not asked for this regardless of relion. I fear for those that have not dollar to evacuate or somewhere to go, or those that were leaving but didn't make it in time. Israel is defending itself on an inhumane level. I can only pray that they do not have an ulterior motive such as ethinically cleansing.Guess as long as all the churches, hospitals, Red Cross trucks, peacekeepers an Qana were unitentional according to Israel than my mind will be a bit more at ease...sure Israel, oopsies

Ann: I pray for the safe return of you and your crew. You are indeed in hostile territory. Unwelcome questions posed by you could mean the loss of life for you all. It is my hope that you are able to minimize a "joining the crowd" mentality that is natural and compelling given the perilous straits in which you are trying to navigate.

I read the opinions here I can't believe it: some say "it is sad" that civilians die, but the killing pretty much should continue. Well, I guess this is the difference. When people fell just sad, not outraged. When it is not sickening that children are killed. On both sides. Israel feel to have moral authority to defent itself, but there is no morality in killing children. Hezbollah are clear - they are just murderers with no other agenda. So, who will win it? You must ne dillusional to think, that Israel can win by killing more civilians. This is what feeds hezbollah, they are tricking Israel into more fighting that will lead to more support for Hezbollah. How many years will take for the israelis to realize that they can't win by using their enemy's weapons?!

Ever since 911 I have been patiently waiting to hear at least one Islamic country to condemn the attack that killed over 3000 innocent people in the United States.
The overwhelming majority of Moslem population ENJOY when a terrorist attack takes place anywhere! I think teaching hate to Moslem children generation after generation by their parents has grave consequences for the entire world. The Moslem families in the meddle-east and Europe reproduce about 9 children in average per family. The problem is actually getting bigger.
Now they want Israel’s destruction next on line is Europe and then we are next etc...
At the end they start killing one-another. Just like in Bagdad….
The oil was about $17.00 a barrel now it is pushing about $70.00. This excess wealth is sponsoring and promoting TERRORISM!
Iran’s nuclear facilities MUST BE DESTROYED NOW!!!

Hizbollah is hiding behind civilians. Ground force is needed to root them out. Bombing from the air alone wouldnt serve any purpose but continued killing of the innocents.

Remember everyone, that the people who are telling you that Hezbollah is responsible for the dead Lebanese babies are the same people who lied about WMD, domestic spying and Plamegate. Remeber this,"Anyone in this administration who revealed classified information...."
One thing is certain. There are a lot of dead babies, killed by American weapons. Mission Accomplished.

I appreciate efforts made by the press to keep us informed.
Do any of you believe what is written in The Word?

This is your moment, Ann Curry.
Give it all you've got and stay safe
and strong. Deep breaths!! XXX

Over 1600 missiles have been launched at Israel and no has cared, especially the UN. Not a peep out of the Arab countries or from the “so called civilized world”.

Lebanon and yes I mean Lebanon attacked Israel by kidnapping 2 solders from their territory and killed others there. Lebanon is the responsible party here not Hezbollah as Lebanon has allowed Hezbollah to exist freely and conduct its terrorist actions freely.
Hence Hezbollah is Lebanese. When a government allows a terror organization to exist freely, it means that the Government must bear all responsibility for it.

Israel warned Southern Lebanese citizens of its intention. It also notified the world of how Hezbollah was waging war by hiding among the general population. No one said a word.

It is sad that people were killed but lets lay the blame where it needs to, with the Lebanese people. If you want to live in peace then you must let others live in peace. Israel has done everything in its power to minimize casualties. It is not firing indiscriminately into the Lebanese population as the Lebanese Hezbollah are, when they fire their missiles into Israel. Israel is targeting the Lebanese Hezbollah who are with out shame hiding among regular people when they attack. Again this is the fault of the Lebanese people for allowing this.

The UN, the world and especially the Arabs should be ashamed of allowing the Lebanese Hezbollah to exist.

I think the media that is reporting over there in the middle east is a great source to us beacuse we know then over here as america what is going on in the world around us since the President doesn't report any news to us so we have to get it from another source. But as far as the world is going it is a diss grace we are dealing with too much on our plate and I think we are so worried about what is going on around us which I beleive is fine but we also should not ignore what is going on here at home. I tseems like the president wants every country to be a democracy but it's not that easy and they will put up a fight till the end.

As long as the Israel Lobby -AIPAC- controls our Congress and presidents and media - there will be perpetual war.

to the opinion from 3:29:30
Everyone who kills innocent children is a villain. Now, if you want to compare who is the bigger villain, I will give you that, Hezbollah is the bigger villain. So what? Comparing villains will never bring peace.
Simply having democracy does not make you morally right. Hamas was democratically elected, are they morally right then? Stop listening what politicans tell you about democracy. Democracy simply means, that the government represents the majority. What if and when the majority is wrong? How about centuries of slavery with a democratically elected government?!
Israel is a democracy and that makes it even more morally obligated to act civilized. Not by killing 32 children with a single bomb. Hezbollah in its majority are killers and you can't expect good from them. But Izrael shouls be counted on a different standard. Especially if they still want to be perceived as the "good guys".

I think the Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. said it best when he said peace will only come when Hezzbola and Hamas parents love their children more than they hate Israel. The innocent ones will continue to die until that day comes.

Hizbullah is a terrorist organization with no value for human life, Israel is a democracy trying to fight a strategic war and minimalize casualties, which is hard to do when Hizbullah uses civilians as shields. How can you people seriously think Israel is the villain here! Israel is a democracy, much like the US, whose people are being threatened every day by terrorist suicide bombers. If we here in the US were afraid to leave our houses for fear of being blown up by a suicide terrorist, you can bet that the US government would take action against said terrorists.

I love the msnbc.com news site. With Katrina you brought it up close and personal as with this war. From what I'm reading, Hizbollah doesn't have missiles and planes to drop bombs, and if their rockets have Iran stamped on it, Israel has "General Dynamics" stamped on theirs.
it was a mistake for the Israelis to insist on moving into the M.E. surrounded by Arabs, how silly can that be? Now that is done there will never be peace.

Israel was founded on terrorism. Begin and his terrorist group, which the British outlawed, bombed the King David Hotel and later assassinated Lord Moyne. It was these events that led to the creation of Israel, even though they had only 30% of the population. It is these events that were celebrated by Netanyahu this year.
Don't be fooled the Jews have been terrorists long before there was a PLO or Hamas or Hizbullah. All of these terror groups were formed as a direct response to Israel's constant terror in the region.

Please enough with the poor old Israel, everyone picks on her BS. At least be impartial with your comments.

One of the things Israel should do is remove all the News media from Israel and Lebonon by any means necessary to prevent the news media from spreading the lies and half truths that hizbullah is feeding them, and the news media from feeding the rest of the world. Let Israel go ahead and finish hezbullah and then, then, when syria and iran merge from their rat holes in support for their hezbullah pupets nuke them

I have trouble understanding why more isn't being made of the fact that Hesbollah's method of fighting involves hiding within the civilian population. Perhaps "civilians" could do far more to protect themselves by refusing to be victimized and not harboring the real Israeli enemy. If Hasbollah is as fierce a fighting machine as they espouse to be they would not have to hide behind (and victimize)the women and children of Lebanon. As the people of the middle east begin to side with Hezbollah, understand that Hesbollah has made it clear that they care more about "winning" than the people they claim to care so much about.

I've got an original thought - War Is Hell.

How many children have been killed in wars throughout history - how many Jewish children died in Nazi ovens.

The Judeo-Christians morn the loss of a child - any child. I'm not certain there is the same sense of loss from our Muslim brothers. It appears that their children - and all martyrs - get whisked to paradise - I wonder at what age the males get presented with the 72 virgins - I wonder at what age the females become one of the 72 virgins.

Religion aside - how can you pick a fight with a big guy - and when you get your ass kicked - hide behind your women and children - then call foul when the women and children get killed. How many times have we seen this scenario played out. After many wars with Egypt,Israel finally found peace - after many wars with Jordan, Israel finally found peace. It would appear that the Lebanese are not yet ready for peace.

The press is correct, war is horrible and unfortunately there will be civilian casualties and destruction of property. BUT; has everyone forgotten what started this? Where are the kidnapped soldiers? Israel has every right to defend themselves against border-crossing militants intent on their (Israels) destruction. Why has this suddenly become an issue of "poor injured civilians, destroyed property", where is the worlds indignation when a bomb goes off on a bus in Isreal, a market, train station, etc......And why is the U.S. being blamed for not stopping the conflict? Why is it that we're damned if we do, and damned if we don't? Personally I'm proud of Isreal, their no nonsense kick-your-butt attitude is what's needed against hard line terrorists! What the press needs to do is keep perspective on a story and stop sensationalizing news reports because they're playing up the sympathy aspect! War is ugly, we know that. So are terrorist attacks on civilians. As long as countries support, harbor and protect terrorists they will suffer the consequences of their actions. If you allow a terrorist organization to store their bombs in a residential neighborhood, it's no longer just a neighborhood. You can't have it both ways!

I have a proposal. Hear me out. America should ends it's backing of Israel and the Iran and Syria should end their backing of Hizbollah. Sounds good? Someone present this to GW Bush.

Any to Larry who made the comment about why doesn't hizbullah move the civilians out... last time I checked, the first thing the Israelis did was bomb all bridges and roads leading to and from Southern Lebanon! How do you expect civilians to leave their homes, if there's no way out?

Out of curiousity, why doesn't Canada, and countries in South America, Europe, and Asia deem Hizbullah as a terrorist organization? Hmm... something to ponder about.

All Hezbollah has to do is hand over the 2 captured Israeli soldiers for the fighting to stop. If they hand over the soldiers and Israel continues to fire at lebanon, then the lebanese people could have something to complain about. Israel has given fair notice to all civilians to clear out of areas that Israel is planning to hit. If they don't heed those warnings, then shame on them. They obviously don't care about the safety of their children.
