Large-scale Lebanon evacuations?

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters today that the U.S. is estimating that it will have to evacuate thousands of Americans by sea and air from Lebanon, but he could not say exactly when. In the "very near future" was how he put it.

"You don't actually know how many people are going to want to leave until you actually start the larger-scale operations," said McCormack.

As NBC Pentagon Correspondent Jim Miklaszewski reports, that process has already started as they are moving some Americans out in groups of 10 via an airbridge to Cyprus. McCormack said they will begin to move Americans by groups of 100s soon.

He said State and DOD officials are currently working on where the "rally points" would be for Americans to gather. In the meantime, they are encouraging people to gather up their travel gear and documents immediately to prepare to leave. Each traveler is told they can bring one suitcase weighing less than 30 pounds and no pets will be allowed.

For days the State Department has been encouraging Americans to register their whereabouts online, but now officials say those citizens who have not yet registered with the U.S. Embassy should do it by phone at (202) 501-4444 from overseas or at 1-888-407-4747 in the U.S.

I am a bit upset and dissapointed at some of the reporting. When you hear comments like the Hezbollah been back by Lebabon ..it is infurating. The Lebanese are not one group, but a Country of many different groups. The Maronites Christian, Roman Catholiocs, Jews, Protrestants, Greek Orthodox, Christian Armenian(forgotten by many, Muslim Sunis and Shite and Druze have co-existed for many centuries. I recently was visiting my husband in Abu Dhabi and took a trip Beirut, Lebanon on July 2nd and I am thankfull for been able to visit my husbands family. I was very lucky to have left on July 8th days before all the bombing. The tensions in Israel were already starting before mu arrival to Beirut and mostly concentrated inside the Northern parts of Israel and the Palestinian areas. Beirut was pretty peacefull, beautiful and the hotels were full of people, tourist. This summer Lebanon was looking finally alive and was coming back to a normal City life. Everyone I meet was so possitive and hopefull. Yes, there was need for jobs and the specter of all the illegal inmigrants, mostly poor from Syria, Palestinian descent, Iranian and other Counties which for what ever reason been religious, political or social were or remained in Lebanon. When are We(the US) going to realize that this conflict one is not Lebanese in nature. This is a war between the Country-less Patestinian and the Israleies unreluctant to provide also peace to people which like them have been persecuted and murdered. Every human been has a right to live only God can deny us this right. Yes, there has been from both sides violence and stupidity. The Lebanese are not backing Hezballah nor Hezballah represents a Lebanese majority, nor all Palestinian or all the Muslims. Contrary to what they(radical muslims) may want you to believe. The majority of the perople I have meet all want peacefull coe-existance and a roof over their's heads, a prosperous future for their children and work to provide for their needs. It is what any human been desires no matter who or where the come from. The continuing proverty, desperation and no prospect for the future is the fuel which feed the fundamentalist movements in many of the Middle Eastern contries. Opression and lack of prosperity, lack of freedom is what feeds this evil specter called fundamentalism...been muslim or by any other type. It is extremist and manipulates those for lack of money, food or education will follow the only hand that feeds them or confort thems. Look at Latin America for example, Nicaragua, Columbia, Peru and other places like Ethiopia, Afganistan as well as Iraq, North Korea, Kashimir...the list is long. How many lives will it take? It is education and prospects of prosperity which will help bring democracy, peace and respect for others no matter how different we are. The basic missing piece is respect for the Human Race! God Helps us all. I prayed in the foot of the Virgin Mary of Harissa, Lebanon that the peace in Lebanon will last. I saw there many people from many Counties...India, Iran, Syria, Lebanon...so we are not so different after all. I do hope your news bring more a balanced reporting with more clear discussion of all sides. The Israelies are not the only victims nor the only ofenders...I am of the belive they are guilty to some level. It is time to peacefully sit down and stop this nonesence.

feel sorry for the people of lebanon & palestane
american should give peace to muslims and stop assisting israel for killing the innocent.

I hope they get out safely. I hope the people of Lebanon get out safely also and leave the war to the soldiers. How sad, but war is war.
